I know plenty of lesbians who have fond memories of Girl scouts. 1 person in ten is gay. 1 person in 100,000 is transgendered. The whole thing is silly. I'm a lib and I'm for transgender because I get how u can be born one way and feel like something else ie a female or male, but, Ana, I do understand why some parents would be iffy about this. Letting a transgender girl or boy in w the "opposite" sex would make some parents uncomfortable because they still have the "parts" they were born with. I assume that's why they would be uncomfortable. If it just bothrs them because it's not the "norm" then shame on them... get w the times!

While actual transgendered people usually say that they have known their condition ever since they were children at 7 years old it seems a little premature to decide that that is what the child has and is. Should that child not get a chance to really decide for themselves when they go through puberty? Are the parents putting ideas into that kids head? I think those are valid concerns.
Current models describe sexual identity as comprised of 4 independent qualities; biological sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. Biological sex relates to our physical sex. Sexual orientation who we are attracted to. Gender identity, what we feel like "inside". Gender expression, how we present our gender, our style.
Most people are not aware of their own Gender identity because they experiences no dissonance between it and their physical sex.

The problem with allowing a child to dress like they choose is that they just might be confused and need a parent to help them identify with the correct gender. So, I would never allow a child of mine to dress like the opposite gender and would constantly correct any gender inapproriate behaviors. If they end up being trangender or lesbian or gay it won't be because I encouraged them to be that way. That is for sure. Nevertheless, I would love them and show them love no matter what. God Bless.

I wish that people understood what being transgendered is like. Imagine growing up and realizing that your face and body are not really your own, and you sensed that all your life. Everyday you look into the mirror & see a stranger. Doesn't everyone want to be comfortable in their own skin? For some people, it's not unlike ridding themselves of a cancer. It eats at them until there is nothing left.
From an biology standpoint there's no such thing as a true sex change. Just disfigured genitals and a lie you tell yourself? @theabomation While you are right that in the most BASIC sense it does not make you female or male depending on what you try to become, you can still be very close. Through the use of hormone injections and therapy it is possible to become as damn near the opposite sex as possible. Should parents force their children to do certain tasks that are definite boy/girl in origin no but putting the title as transgendered on a 7 year seems like their doing more harm than good once the kid becomes a teenager/young adult

I have a issue being a previous girl scout with boys joining dressed up as girls. They can make their own scouts or join boy scouts esp. since their acitivities are somewhat similar. Why does every scout troop have to change for 1 child? Its just way too much at 7 esp. since he has to go to school and children are cruel and whose to say those girls want him there.

@Salien1999 girl scouts and boy scouts are two completely separate organizations with different rules the girl scouts don't have any restrictions for allowing gay/lesbian or atheist/agnostic girls from joining and if the BSA is afraid of the child being criticized/abused then they could stick up for the kid instead of barring their entry no the BSA leadership think that gays are icky they are not trying do defend them

@mochaguy22 I totally agree with this. It is called the GIRL scouts, hence all of the members (hehe members) are female. Boys, transgendered or not should not be included in the GIRL scouts no matter if they identify as a girl or not. I think it's fair to not accept him in the girl scouts.

Fortunately the Girl Scouts do not want to exclude ANY girl and so EVERY girl is allowed, regardless of their appearance. This is a good thing.

There are different issues to deal with and frankly I don't think the girl scouts is the right fit for them anyway. To some point this child's parents has to explain to them that they are different and that there is nothing wrong with being different. They must also teach them that they can't do everything. I personally would not however. A hermaphrodite and a girl that looks like a boy are different cases (both are actually girls), they should be accepted into the girl scouts. But even if this child thinks he is a girl, he is still a boy. Don't lie to the child by telling him he's a girl, tell him he's different.

@afqwcx She was born in the wrong body and if you were to try to "teach him that he is NOT a girl," there is a huge chance you would cause her to develop severe depression (and possibly attempt suicide) if she was exposed to you for a long time.

This girls real gender is female so she should be raised as a female. True, she won't experience everything a cisgender girl will but that doesn't make her any less of a girl than say, a girl born sterile. And she shouldn't be singled out because of this. Why should others consider us what we are? One reason is there are still areas that are limited to one gender or the other so it is very important that others at least accept us for the gender that we are presenting.

I'm a lib and I'm for transgender because I get how u can be born one way and feel like something else ie a female or male, but, Ana, I do understand why some parents would be iffy about this. Letting a transgender girl or boy in w the "opposite" sex would make some parents uncomfortable because they still have the "parts" they were born with. While actual transgendered people usually say that they have known their condition ever since they were children at 7 years old it seems a little premature to decide that that is what the child has and is. Should that child not get a chance to really decide for themselves when they go through puberty? Are the parents putting ideas into that kids head? I think those are valid concerns.

Sexual orientation who we are attracted to. Gender identity, what we feel like "inside". Gender expression, how we present our gender, our style.
Most people are not aware of their own Gender identity because they experiences no dissonance between it and their physical sex.

The problem with allowing a child to dress like they choose is that they just might be confused and need a parent to help them identify with the correct gender. So, I would never allow a child of mine to dress like the opposite gender and would constantly correct any gender inapproriate behaviors. If they end up being trangender or lesbian or gay it won't be because I encouraged them to be that way. That is for sure. Nevertheless, I would love them and show them love no matter what. God Bless.

I wish that people understood what being transgendered is like. Imagine growing up and realizing that your face and body are not really your own, and you sensed that all your life. Through the use of hormone injections and therapy it is possible to become as damn near the opposite sex as possible. @mochaguy22 I totally agree with this. It is called the GIRL scouts, hence all of the members (hehe members) are female. Boys, transgendered or not should not be included in the GIRL scouts no matter if they identify as a girl or not. I think it's fair to not accept him in the girl scouts.

What about girls who look too much like a boy? Because once you start down the road of exclusion the list of "acceptable" members only gets smaller.
Fortunately the Girl Scouts do not want to exclude ANY girl and so EVERY girl is allowed, regardless of their appearance. This is a good thing.

There are different issues to deal with and frankly I don't think the girl scouts is the right fit for them anyway. To some point this child's parents has to explain to them that they are different and that there is nothing wrong with being different. They must also teach them that they can't do everything. A boy is not a girl and viceversa

I personally would not however. A hermaphrodite and a girl that looks like a boy are different cases (both are actually girls), they should be accepted into the girl scouts. But even if this child thinks he is a girl, he is still a boy. Don't lie to the child by telling him he's a girl, tell him he's different.

If we go by ur logic then every kid who thinks they're batman should fight crime. There are limits to what they can do and we need to prepare them for REALITY. @afqwcx She was born in the wrong body and if you were to try to "teach him that he is NOT a girl," there is a huge chance you would cause her to develop severe depression (and possibly attempt suicide) if she was exposed to you for a long time.
And your Batman example is dumb. No one in their right mind would let the kid fight crime because he'd most likely end up dead. Being transgender doesn't run the risk of killing you unless you're stuck in a place with people who think like you.

@afqwcx : Transgendered is not a gender in itself. It's a classification of a person who is or will transition from one gender to another. This girls real gender is female so she should be raised as a female. True, she won't experience everything a cisgender girl will but that doesn't make her any less of a girl than say, a girl born sterile. And she shouldn't be singled out because of this. Informed, yes, but not singled out. That invites ridicule which can be deadly.

But my mind hasn't changed. I have and still consider myself female and I will be female no matter what I look like. @afqwcx : You keep using false analogies. Gender identity is simply not the same as wanting to be a different race. And there is a lot of research to back up the fact that it's a serious medical condition that requires treatment in order to live a happy life.
Why should others consider us what we are? One reason is there are still areas that are limited to one gender or the other so it is very important that others at least accept us for the gender that we are presenting.
