  • One of the best show I ever went to. What a great night!

  • it was so nice of them to cover this song!!! shows that they have respect for us!! Great job!

  • I'm just a haole boy, but this song never fails to move me. I miss the beauty of Hawaii, but mostly the beauty of the people of Hawaii. Some day i will return with my hapa kids and never leave again.

  • This is typical Eddie Vedder. Always brings awareness to what is clearly wrong with the world.

  • Fantastico...!!!

  • Umai Umai. Kyoku Daisuki to Takusan IMI ga Aru Yo. Pearl Jam no Ongaku o Kikimahen ga Kono Uta wa Yoi Dekita. Kokoro kara Utattande Hontou ni Arigatou Gozaimashita. Kono Bideo o Zettai Wasuremahen. UA MAU KE EA O KA AINA I KA PONO. UP Homma ni Okii Ni. SEKKAI YORI ALOHA...

  • I was there. It was a bonus that night because U2 had a show they cancelled a few months previous and PJ was coming to town and they decided to team up for one massive show. Talk about luck, and Billy Joe Armstrong, from Green Day showed up to play a song with PJ and U2. Great night.

  • Iz was one of the best things from and of Hawaii. He is sorely missed and he so loved Hawaii.

  • I so teared up too cuz we danced hula at May Day every year to this song. For a haole Eddie did a really good job!

  • Macnut...you so right on! :)

  • dont know what brought me here to listen to this today, you know how that goes when you youtube surf, but I was there when he sang it live. Only a person whom calls Hawaii home can sing that song with that kind of emotion. "haole" or not, he was "at home" singing that song and thats what made it so epic. Eddie Gets it. And although I respect him for his art, and have for many years I respect him for this the most.

  • Ho brah, I got chicken skin listening to this.

  • they need to make a studio version of this song

  • Much props to whoever told the Hawaii 50 show to use this as their closing song. Gave me chills like always. I remember Cold Case closing one of their shows with Somewhere over the Rainbow - SICK! I love Hawaii.

  • Wow wish I was there... I saw Pearl Jam at the University of Hawaii in Sept. of 92 when I was in high school, didn't even wanna go but a friend convinced me. They blew me away with their skilled musicianship; I can only imagine how it felt being there for this show!

  • Maika'i nui loa!

  • in respect of the great Iz

    mahalo and aloha from germany

  • @madeinhawaii - it means nothing to you that the "6th member" of pearl jam is waimanalo-raised keyboard player, boom gaspar? this HAWAIIAN played on 02's "riot act" and 06's "pearl jam" and tours with them every year. seems you're doing a bigger disservice to hawaiians by not even knowing when one has achieved greatness and is bringing attention to the travesty in HIS homeland. ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono

  • everytime i watch this..chills.

  • Go Pearl Jam! This really made me glad to see a big mainstream band play this song.

  • Wow, got chills running up my spine, chicken skin all over, and the eyes started to swell up with tears. That was simply just AMAZING, I'm speechless... Hawaii raised and missing home. PJ much PROPS, much RESPECT!

  • What a very nice tribute !

  • Pearl Jam my hawaiian heart is with u all the way

  • Pearl Jam played 11 free shows here because they love Hawaii. And Hawaii loves them. PERIOD.

  • ho foreal

  • Okay I've watched this so many times and the song and the performance made me teary.

  • wow i heard about this song/performance at aloha stadium and kinda thought it was wierd PJ would play this but they did it their own way and with respect...pretty mean!

beat eddie was small kine worried what ppl would think of him singing this song...i bet kelly slater told him to "run em hard" lol!

  • Nothing compared to the real thing by Iz, but still amazing.

  • When the crowd started going crazy I got crazy chills, I love this band.

  • Comment removed

  • I hope PJ really knows how much we appreciated that performance. It's very rare that a band will come to Hawai'i and cover a Hawaiian song from one of our greatest. This cover was definitely a surprise and totally unexpected. You can hear the crowd going crazy when they realized what he was singing. PJ is great :)

  • I have respect for pearl jam now, even though I don't care for their music

  • I've give them props for doing this, this seems like something PJ would do because they do care about social issues. At least they picked up on a very big issues among the Kamaka Maoli.

  • oh okay. so by your logic pearl jam performing this song is an affront to where you live? way to have delicate, lady like sensibilities, junior.

  • They knew enough to leave out that lyrics that would sound ridiculous if they sang it ("If just for a day our king and queen...")

Just take it for what it was meant to be: an outsider paying tribute to Hawaii.

  • madeinhawaii, sumbodyz tryin 2 show u respekt by honorin ur kulture n all u got 2 say iz ur nazi hawaiian shit. fukk u n all like u!

  • Please.

Listen to the lyrics. He only repeats the chorus, and and a couple of other lines.

Out of respect, he doesn't sing the lines that reference "our people" or "our land"

The "stupid haole" who plays keyboard for Pearl Jam isn't. He's a local named named Boom Gaspar, who Eddie met while surfing. Eddie loves Hawaii.

    This is Respect.

  • That cover is really good. Love the original as well though. Cheers from Denmark, Scandinavia!

  • (Ua mau ka ea o ka 'aina i ka pono)

The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness!... RESPECT! Mahalo and Aloha Pearl jam... you guys are totally freaking amazing!... Keep on rOcKiN!

  • I give this guy props for trying....its not everyday that you find a haole singing hawaiian music especially when it isn't his choice of genre....SUUUPPPEEEEEE!!!!

  • This band is such a class act! Total respect to them for covering such a meaningful song to the Hawaiian people during a concert on Oahu. Peace and love to Pearl Jam!

  • I got chicken skin and felt the tears swelling...amazing!

  • WOOOOOOW! One of those amazing music moments that kicks you in the chest. MAD PROPS AND RESPECT TO Pearl Jam.

  • Got the shivers at the start watching that... class clip

  • mad respect...

  • never forget Israel Kamakawiwo'ole

  • Unless your friend's dad is the legendary Bradda Iz...I'd erase this post...respect the dead man!

  • eh i never said he was Braddah Iz!!..gosh ur so stupid..Here let me break it down kindergarten style..My dad has a friend..his friend wrote this song in 7th grade...Braddah iz just sang this song..if u dont know who originally wrote this song, dont talk to me.

  • WTF...Iz didn't write this song! He just sang it...like Eddie Vedder is doing in this video.

  • IZ didn't write this song, just covered it. Don't get me wrong, he's great, but he didn't do too many originals.

  • Iz made it popular but uncle Micky Ioane wrote it.....google it...if u dont believe.

  • Damn, I've got some new found respect for Pearl Jam for doing something so honorable for their fans and respecting the history of this great people.

  • @rgunzalez they blew the doors off. people were crying. people were silent. it was stunning and beautiful.
