My understanding is that Del was Bi-polar and a shrink mistakenly prescribed an anit-depressant for his condition. When Zoloft/Prozac first came out there were a LOT of these mis-prescriptions that lead to tragic suicides.
R.I.P Del, It sounds bad, but, I'll only remember you for Runaway, but, at only 28 years of age, you might count that as ignorance, but, still an amazing song, and, I hope you're happy where you are.
@ChrisWales22 I met a guy in my retail business probably 4 or 5 yrs. ago who claimed he was writing a bio on Del. Supposedly it was even going to include death photos that he had gotten ahold of too. The guy also claimed to have written several other bios. I was so busy, I didn't get his name. He came across like a guy who wasn't lying, but who knows. But surely there is at least one Del bio out there.
Just looking at Del's eyes in this vid is haunting, he was already dead in spirit.
@naderchaser Thanks for the info, seems quite interesting. There is one, I forget the name of the author, called 'Stranger in Town' but it's around $70
I have to agree with Luke, Del didn't seem like his regular self, not much energy in that song. He usually puts out alot more energy in the other performances I've seen him in.
This concert was held on the 31st anniversary of the day the music died (buddy holly, richie valens, and big bopper). Del took his own life 5 days later. That's about enough to lose my mind. It reads like a bad script.
I watched this video a second time and it's so sad. Not only does he seem like he is just out of it, but he looks dark under his eyes and puffy. I think of how depressed he was and having to get in front of that audience. His eyes are also swollen. I wonder why no one reached out to him.. I always hate it when talents like this get tossed to the side playing in some old concert halls and just doing Rock and Roll Revivals. Del was better than that.
He doesn't seem his usual self in this concert. If you notice, he just seems to be going thru the motions. His other concerts he was really enjoying entertaining. What a shame he couldn't get the help he needed. A great talent!!
lukeloveslauraalways, I think you're absolutely right. That makes this footage that much more poignant as well as eerie and haunting. It hurts me to watch it.
@coyotesong THis is too sad .. i agree with the eerines of it all, Didnt Buddy , The big Bopper and Ritchie Valens, Fly out of Fargo too before the Crash?? And here is Del Performing, very depressed it appears, who knows what was on his mind.. , I know he had a lot of things pulling at him at this time , 1st wife wanted him to change his will, Managers hasseling him, I guess he was a troubled soul for most of his Life, what a voice, Suicide is so Final, If He could have Just gotten past, it
@jjs499 Suicide is certainly final. No doubt about that..
Buddy, Richie, and Bopper were flying to Fargo from Clear Lake, Iowa on Feb 3, 1959, the Day the Music Died. I was too young/unaware to understand the 59 plane crash a the time. But Runaway was one of the first 45s i bought when i was 14 or 15. I'm also a Michiganian like Del. Even 20 years later, it's all so sad to have lost him so soon. And there's nothing you can do.
@jjs499 My sense is that part of what was going on for Del in the midst of all his screaming demons dragging him down was if they didn't make it to Fargo, why have I? Obviously this is pure speculation on my part. But it's based on my own battles with my the bloody demons.
@Nu13th There was no trace of Prozac in his system at the time of his death. Not only was Del depressed but he was also suffering from the flu and a sinus infection the days before and after this performance
Del had charisma and great talent. Great style. He was easily among the greatest in his genre. This video is the worst I've seen of him. All of the others are better.
Fargo is some sort of black hole for musicians -- Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, Richie Valens, Del Shannon. I was there once on business for about 24 hours, and it was the weirdest place I ever visited (and I've been to a lot of weird places over the years). Perhaps Shannon's widow should have blamed Fargo instead of Eli Lilly and Prozac.
Fantastic voice....he could sing the phone book in chinese and I would still get a tear in my eye.....his Rock on" album is worth digging out.....superb from start to finish
I hope they put this guy in the hall of fame,so many styles of music are based on his simple but great stuff.I remember hearing them the first time they were released.Still great sounding
It was sad the way he finished his life. He was a loved singer here in the UK. Realy great music without the need for videos. I am so glad there are tracks I have not heard before. Thanks You Tube! Unique sound and I heard he pioneered it himself. I am surprised more artists have not done covers of his songs in different styles.
This is not the true Del Shannon! We all should realise that he was THE greatest singer of all time as well as a fantastic songwriter.I met him in Yorkshire,England back in the 70`s and when he sings those slow songs he still brings tears to my eyes(I won`t be there,The answer to everything etc.)\we will never see the like again!!!
"Gary and I removed Shannon from the chair, laid him on a sheet of plastic and wrapped him further for transport to the Coroners Office. Along with him was the .22 rifle that had been used. I had vehicle 603 0r 892 as they were the few that had AM/FM radios. After awhile the local station played a few of his songs and the hair on my neck was straight up and stayed there a long time."
...Ultimately however, he was branded to rock 'n' roll revival tours which finally took their toll on 8 February 1990, when a severely depressed Shannon pointed a .22 calibre rifle to his head and pulled the trigger...
its a sad emotional video for me to watch but how many happy memories do we have of the great man, for many he made the 1960,s what they were and his music lives on and still sounds timeless to this very day. miss you loads del boy.
Its strange but this date, 3rd feb is the anniversary of Buddy Hollys death, and Fargo North Dakota was the venue he was flying to when he was killed!!!!!
I saw Del somewhere in the 80's at a county fair. He was wearing a cowboy hat, and I think he may have done a Hank Williams tune. After the show, I got his autograph, and He was sort of bald, but cool as hell. He would have made the Traveling Wilbury's lot of hits, thats for certain.
Thanks for your story...it literally caused me to well up. Being a fellow Michiganian (or michigander if you prefer), it's really disappointing that I never saw him somewhere around Battle Creek or other venue inthe state.
for a sick guy in the dead of winter in fargo playing song he'd done for 25 years I give him benefit of doubt. Road warrior RIP
