It's a Japanese treat made out of pounded rice formed into a sticky paste. Traditionally, it was made by at least two people: One person pounded the rice into the sticky paste, while the other person wet it occasionally so it doesn't stick to the hammer-like cooking tool used for pounding the rice. There's also ice cream mochi treats.
