NO, this wasn't the 1950s, and, NO, this band wasn't popular for just a short time, neither. They hung around for years. This was the first Elgart band, probably around 1946. It never got off the ground, and they broke it up a couple of years later. They tried again in 1953, and was a smash success, and recorded hit albums for Columbia Records for 16 years straight. Larry Elgart's record Hooked on Swing released in 1982 was certified Gold.
Thank you for comments. Although, this video may not have been recorded in the 50's (as someone else suggested) the "Les Elgart" band was the band refered to and not the "Elgart Band" which, I agree did continue on for the period you suggest but, directed by Larry Elgart.
I am no authority on music, but I would put the style of clothing both men and women here, and the hairstyles at the mid to late 40s. Half way thru the sax interlude seems to have a little bebopish framing. Finally, this is in the style of the Modernaires, or even the Kaye-dettes, therefore I would be surprised if it was not 1948 give or take a year.

Because, music like everytking else in our society today has declined.

This is such a swell song, with a sweet arrangement. Why have both things become such rarities today?!
