Galina Vishnevskaya - Faust - Jewell Song

It was odd hearing this French aria from Gounod's Faust sung in Russian. But Galina has a marvelous voice - big & brilliant. She has an intensity here that doesn't fit with the humble character of Marguerite but many sopranos have sung the role with a heavy/dramatic approach like Sutherland, Freni, Scotto & Gheorghiu, so she's in good company. I do love Galina's Tosca and now her Marguerite!

I saw Vishnevkaya in the late 1980s or early 1990s (don't remember exactly when) an hour before you was due at Avery Fisher Hall to perform in selections from Alexander Nevsky. I stopped her and told her how much I was looking forward to her performance and how I loved her recording of Pace, pace mio dio. WELL: she sang part of the aria for me on the sidewalk. What a thrilling memory that is for me.

I don' t really recognize her here... When is it from exactly? The strange thing is that it is in colour, because she left USSR before she could let such TV films, isn't it? Or is it post synchro.

I think it's an actress lip-syncing Vishnevskaya's voice. They had color film before she left in '74, tho. :o) Should look for Mikhail Shapiro film of Katerina Izmailova. Also in color and Vishnevskaya both sings and acts there.

She was an awesome artist whose career was hugely stuffed up by the politics of the old USSR system and supporting her husband in latter years. Her Lady Macbeth of Minsk is recognised as difinitive by the composer

Her voice used to be better in the early fifties, she had to sing a lot of operettas to make a leaving and to support her first husband, not Rostropovich. Operettas didnt do her good. FYI she is Rostropovich's widow

How do you know her voice was better in the early 50s? There is not a single recording of Galina Vishnevskaya when she was singing Operettas that I know of. Moreover she writes that the operettas were an important part of her learning in expressiveness.

will ever Anna Netrebko sing like this because this is pure clear crystal opera sound that anyone can follows or repeat the words without knowing the language at all.I can't say the same about Netrebko .
