  • hi love this! just wondering how long you leave the stain on before wiping it off. also do you used any type of clear top coat after you are done or is the staining the last step? thanks!

  • @jessorourke9 I'm so bad at checking my youtube comments, sorry for the delayed response. I don't let it sit very long, maybe a few minutes tops. It can sometimes take a few days to dry, but it dries nice and hard with a little bit of a sheen. No need for a clear coat.

  • can you do it to furniture painted with gloss?

  • @hollybroon sure. just clean well and sand, preperation is the same as show on the piece of furniture in the video.

  • Thank you so much for sharing your secrets. I am wondering what kind of sprayer you use. I purchased a sprayer but I returned it after trying to use it. Yours looks like it works great. Also, do you have to water down the paint before it will work in the sprayer. Thanks for the info.

and I agree with the previous commenter- you are darling. Very photogenic. Great for videos - maybe someone will see this and give you your own show : )

  • @RondaJane Hi! Since I published this video I have purchased a new spray gun (several actually). The one I currently use is a Graco TrueCoat and it is awesome! I would highly recommend it. I posted an article all about this gun and how to use it on my website. Oh, and it requires NO thinning, which is great.

  • Wow she's adorable!

  • I use Acrylic Latex based paint as well, but I cant get it chips with chains like that. Its too flexible. I'm using regular Latex paint that you'd paint your walls with. Maybe I need a paint thats more Acrylic that Latex?! Any Suggestions?!

Do I need to put a light poly coat over the paint and THEN hit with chains to create chipping?

  • @ThomasFinch1 hmmmm. that's weird. I don't use a poly coat, just paint. how long are you waiting after you've painted it to beat it up? maybe the paint has just not had enough time to cure. it can take any where from one to three weeks for paint to really get hard, especially if you've applied several layers. maybe try that?

  • What type of paint do you use to get it to chip off when hit with the chain? What is the base?

  • What type of paint do you use? Latex based?

  • @ThomasFinch1 hello! I use an acyrlic latex based paint.

  • Very helpful video and great technique. I used this technique on a pair of dining chairs which I painted a vibrant red color (flat finish). The danish oil stain sinks into the distressed areas of exposed wood and areas of paint scuffed by sandpaper and imparts a beautiful patina and slight shine. Thank you for posting this.

  • what would you use on top of a color base coat? would white paint work?

  • @eapple87 white paint would work. you'll just need to use a primer first and it may take a few more coats to cover if your base coat is super dark.

  • I really enjoyed this and learned a lot. I have 4 chairs with rails 7 arms with a table & hutch. The table and chairs were painted with polyurethane! Do I need to sand off the shiny and then prime it with the Kilz? Or just prime away? I would like to do a really nice green with the darker stain on the top.. can you recommend a real nice color green to select in the vaspar? Would it be overboard to do them the same?

  • Great vid! I have a question! Can you do this with two colors? I saw this one piece of furniture and it was white. but where it looked chipped and rustic looking, there was a pink color. Is that possible? I didn't know if this was store bought or home made. I was house sitting the other day and in the living room was the dresser, which I am talking about. Please let me know as soon as possible. Thanks

  • @SuperBribri777 sure. follow all of the steps, but add a different color underneath your top coat. the areas that you sand and distress will show through a bit of that color, wood will show through too.

  • what kind of paint do you recommend using for the base coat? and do you not use a primer?

  • @crtarbert I usually do use a primer. I like Kilz. That would provide the base coat.

  • so helpful! is it really as easy as it looks?

  • @jsanto24 I think it's easy, but then again I have the right equipment, the space to do it, and have been doing it for years.

  • so helpful!!! thanks

  • Beautiful!

  • Thank you, This video was so helpful! Exactly what I wanted to do.

  • great video and channel

  • Hello,

I love your work! If you were painting a antique roll top desk would you leave the inside unpainted? Also would you still use a sprayer? When you paint dressers with a sprayer, do you leave the drawers in when you spray? Sorry so many questions but I'll be attempting my first piece soon ;)

  • just what we were looking for, THANKS!

  • wow nice job
