This brings back a lot of memories for me as my Dad is an old regular baptist preacher. I was amazed when I watched this video as my aunt, 2 uncles and dad are in one of these pictures. They are at the 2:52 mark. I was wondering where you got these pictures?
I miss home :( This is one of my grandmother's favorite songs that she used to sing around the farm. I am so proud of how I was raised. I didn't just 'grow up'...I was 'raised' up. I was taught to love God, mind my manners, respect my elders, hold my head up, study hard, and always try my best. I pray I am able to pass just as much along to my own daughter who is now 6. May God give me the strength to teach the way I was taught.
Beautiful song choice. I'm from knott county, i also attended this church with my grandparents. every sunday we would go to a different church in the area including my great uncles on old 80 below my house on montgomery creek on the right before you get to emmalena elementary. still attend memorial service on top of the hill off new 80 where my grand parents are now burried. this makes me miss home
I have heard this song for years and years.. My uncle Litton ""Jimmy Dye" and my late grandfather Woodrow Dye... Its amazing to hear it every time . I wouldn't trade this song for anything................ R.I.P Woodrow Dye. ""THE BEST""
Please don't get me wrong. I am no racist and am not trying to start a racial thing here. I am African American and I had to listen closely at first to see if this was a Black congregation. It sounds very much like the devotional services common in Black Baptist churches in the South. The style is what we call "Old Familiar Hymns," or "common meter." I had never heard white congregations sing like this before. It's beautiful and nice to hear.
Hi Don, I don't think anyone will think you're being racist or anything you said will be considered as racist. This type of singing is typical of the Old Regular Baptist Church and Primitive Baptist Churches in KY. I am originally from Knott County KY and have two brothers who are Old Regular Baptist preachers. One of my brothers is asked quite frequently to sing these old hymns as he does have a beautiful singing voice. I, too, love to get on here and listen to this singing.
@don1carter You are correct, Don. I was raised Old Regular Baptist. During my sophomore year, I researched the church & wrote a paper on it.
It's a technique called 'lining.' The vast majority of slaves were unable to read. The song leader sang out the lines & the congregation repeated. He was either able to read or had the songs memorized.
The Southern Baptist churches & the Celtic/Scottish music in Appalachia formed the lining method & songwriting influences of Old Regular Baptist.
My long gone mother Marlene Thompson Ratliff passed away 16 years ago and I can rember the Brother's Grover and Windel Adkins lead her frail body into the water of Fish Trap Lake on a cool Spring day. The pease on her face was as if i was looking at an angel the glow from her face reflect off the muddy water as a glow of light from the lord himself. I thought to my self the water is too cold and she is too frail for this but when she came up she said it was as warm as if her own mother drew it
Another beautiful song. These songs are a gift grom GOD to people of the old regular baptist faith. I have always loved these songs. It makes you think back when you were young, and how fast time is swiftly passing. We should always be so ever grateful for what has given us,and not forget what our generatoins before us have sacrificed in order that we may have life, and have it more abundantly.
this brings back so much memories. i even shed tears for so great an sad past that lost so many wonderful friends that have pass on got nothing but greatness for those peopleuch a great an peaceful time

@lolapop56 who are you talking to, specifically? i read all the comments and don't see any offensive or even questionable posts. i'm not sure why you're upset. i'm from knott county, too.
@mzw oh i am not mad im just telling ppl that if they aren't from ky they don''t have to lie, because it seems that when one person says they are from a place people say they are too but i wasn't being mean just making out a point.
@lolapop56 me too! mothers family attended ball branch. can't remember the name of my dad's family's church. but as we came into hindman from 80 we would turn left and not far you would turn off, cross a little bridge and there is a little white church right on the creek. we moved to somerset when i was 5, but every summer was spent in knott county and of course holidays in between. i still go back just to go to mammaw's church sometimes. can't find anything like it here.
love this, the photos, look like pics from the England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, our past.
