  • Gingrich / Bill The Butcher 2012

  • 1:09 - When he throws the axe, something falls down after it hits him, looks like the end of an axe on the floor. Is it just me or is that a movie mistake?

  • @DoctorAvesta why does it look more manly if a guy eats his steak rare

  • Daniel Day-Lewis is an incredible actor.

  • Lets burn him and see if his ashes turn green

  • 'Now you're tasting my mutton, how'd you like it huh?'

  • theme at 2:08?

  • worst movie ever, just sayin

  • @Coops2517 Thanks for the post, you can now safely be dismissed as a simpleton.

  • "There you are Bill, the people have spoken."

    They didn't say anything.

  • @swygster

    That's the point.

  • man that meat looks delicious

  • The other bloober?Slightly worse?Schoonmaker oscarnommed for best editing...or was it a braindamaged monkey doing it?Forget the bouncing cleaver, watch when Gleeson goes down haha.He just accidentaly, very delibaretely slaps the club close to Bill so they wouldnt need another take.It looks like"Aaargh...there it is,just pick it up,Danny.Aaargh, the pain in my back!Such pain. With the cleaver.Oh no,now my club is closer to him....such misjudgement of distance when falling close to my own weapon."

  • 45 even

  • Notch 42....you Irish bug bastard

  • butcher bill was the best acting i have ever seen fucking totally amazing

  • If you have a meat cleaver...and I have a meat cleaver...and I throw mine ACROSS the room...

  • Bill's steak at the end looks delicious.

  • The Irish and other European immigrants (Italians) were consider non-white. The Irish and others rebelled of course, the elites realized to continue being in power they needed a permenant under-class. The blacks were perfect. Research how the Irish were potrayed in the early years of the US and you'll see the same stereotypes for blacks. Just something to think about.

  • @ErikandAndreea yea they were but italians wernt arriving yet

  • probably best not to turn your back to a man nicknamed bill the butcher

  • Comment removed

  • Bill was scared of McGinn...This is the only scene where Bill shows his cowardness

Daniel definately deserves an Oscar for his part as Bill

  • @theR0cknR0lla Everyone is like that. They are though when they are with their friends, but go find them alone, they are going to act like a bunch of coward chickens.

  • "I drink your milkshake, I drink it up."

  • greasy hair..........

  • Bill is one sexy motherfucker.

  • Lesson learned, never turn your back to bill the butcher

  • 1:08 the knife bounces off, and then it´s inside his back, the other knife that bounces off lays on the floor if you look closely

  • NOW YOUVE TASTED MY MUTTON HOW DO U LIKE IT HUH??

  • I like your hat

  • bill the butcher is a patriot, his grandfather died fighting the british in the revolutionary war and he's continuing his legacy of preserving america.

  • you irish bug bastard.

  • @zyzor Irish Bog Bastard.

  • Idc what anyone says this is THE best character in cinema in the past decade and probably even further Daniel Day-Lewis puts DiCaprio to shame only whish he would play in more films...he needs to play another villain

  • @2frey84

Actually Bill the butcher was based on a real (but less violent) man from the time period who more or less had the same political influence of Bill the butcher in this film.

  • @chevysrock1000 Who was Bill based of?

  • Bill was awesome.

  • This shouldn't be interpreted as an act of cowardice. Think about it. Bill showed up to fight McGinn. Face to face. They both know that's why he's outside his door. When McGinn elects to go the route of diplomacy, it says to Bill that his fighting spirit is dead. The man he came to do combat with isn't there. He verbally sighs, likely at the loss of a worthy adversary, and does away with him. I reckon this is what Scorsese was aiming at. Cowardice doesn't come into play.

  • @RobertStarrHaile S was going for something we felt was unpredictable from a man who spoke about honour 24/7 n gave Amsterdam shit. Why didnt Bill just charge?Or insult him WHILE ALIVE?That was the reason Monk grabbed his club. The butcher knew Monk wouldnt accept the challenge as a sheriff.Monk thought at that point both men were equal to the law now.Which is stupid. But agreeing to talk things out n stab someone in the back will always be a move of bitches,no matter how badass.

  • @Sumumabitch78 but he never agreed to talk he was there for one reason , in the beginning he even says when monk tells him "one day" bill"yes one day is right"..

  • @Sumumabitch78 ohe yea an bill was never going to come in an agreement , and he prob knew he wouldnt be able to take on monk face to face

  • @RobertStarrHaile There´s a reason Monk could walk around in green and wasnt challenged or insulted in 15 years.Bills fear of getting pounded...but here,he is defeaten, the irish have gotten a taste of power and he is furious n did what he thought was right, the enemy had to go.He justified his cowardice in his mind the same way you do.He might´ve had a rule about only respecting one irishman per life.He didnt respect Monk in any way...but he feared his club.

  • there's a fucking mistake in the scene bill throws the knife and you can see it on the floor .l.

  • @rulospetnaz it was actually a meat cleaver not a knife

  • @savage642 anyway it's a mistake it doesn't care what was it.

  • I'll festoon my bed chamber with his guts..

  • This was one of my favorite parts of the movie. I don't think it was cowardly of Bill, he proved a point.

  • If McGinn would of fought he probable would of won that foos a beast ..i want his shillelagh

  • REAL NEW YORK STYLE WERE THE REALIST PEOPLE IN AMERICA SHOW THEM HATERS BILL

  • anyone notice the meat cleaver hitting the wall and bouncing back at 1:10 .. and then stopping in front of Daniel Day Lewis at 1:13

  • @711grim Yeah I noticed that the first time I saw this movie. oh well, you can't expect them to actually throw a knife into the guys back.

  • @Deere55 It's a great movie none-the-less... That didn't bug me at all.. I just thought I should point it out at the lieelt tid bits we missed

  • @711grim amazing never noticed it before...now seems so obvious..and cheap lol...

  • @711grim bank shot???

  • @711grim good spot !

  • @711grim well spoted

  • @711grim lol, youre right, i also noticed that Walter pushes the big stick back to him as he falls

  • @specialfx34 I saw it, and I also noticed it dissappears after they cut to the reaction shot.

  • This could be me, but does anyone notice that when Bill throws the knife, it hits the ground, but when he falls it,s in his back?

  • Dead silence followed by "the people have spoken". XD

  • That my friends...is the minority vote.

Well even though Bill may be an evil bastard he sure knows how to make you smile :D even with a Cleaver in your back

  • @PsychoProductions369 Why would I smile if a cleaver was in my back? O_O I'd be morel ike, "WTF! OWWWW!"

  • @PsychoProductions369 Bill the Butcher is not evil. He is just trying to keep that which he earned.

  • jesus he likes his steak rare

  • @specialfx34 Yeah, Its weird to see such mistakes in a Scorsese film, great movie though.

  • absolutely the most heartbreaking scene of the movie

  • Bill the Butcher: The first Tea Party activist

  • Bills breathing always creeped me out

  • Bill the Butcher wouldn't know where to throw the axe first if you put him in New York these days.

  • @specialfx34 lol waat

  • the people.....didnt say anything

  • @souske25 that's the point...

people are sheep and afraid to speak out.

  • wat movie dis from

  • Bill the Butcher dresses like Willy Wonka

No, I take that back, WILLY WONKA DRESSES LIKE BILL THE BUTCHER

  • Monk took 44 lives in his lifetime, it was inevitable that he would have to pay for them with his own life.

  • What an amazing film. Shame most films don't put this much effort in.

  • @casper123 Thats because most films haven't Daniel Day-Lewis in them.

  • blue rare is awful....he shouldv've had his meat medium rare at least X(.

  • Comment removed

  • all of you people that are riding Bill's dick and supporting him,

    yeah, he's pretty badass but

his character represents the evil, black side of politics and the men behind the curtains. Some of you really need to wake the fuck up.

  • @slangshotstudios Oh come on: Bill the Butcher is a model to us all.

  • @slangshotstudios its a damn movie dude. chill out

  • @GerardBudding movies carry messages. i am chill, i'm just trying to wake up you sheeple.

  • @slangshotstudios its still a damn movie

  • "That my friends is the minority vote.... now you tasted my mutton how you like it huh"

  • @borofalcon101 You have an amazing ability to tell us what most of us have already heard.

  • and he kindly pushes the club backwards so bill can get it easier rather than dropping it in the room like normal.

  • Am I the only 1 who appreciates the sweet irony that made Monk so sympathetic n even more reason this murder especially without a score both feels degrating n affected me?The irony being that..15 years earlier happy Jack(Reilly) n McGloin etc.The "Loyal" dead rabbits had sold out to the butcher out of greed or lack of options n the ONE guy who wasn´t a dead rabbit, who was a mercenary then Now is the"last proud irishman" who won´t sell out, kiss ass n tries to have the butcher killed.R.I.P Monk.

  • bill is the man yee haa

  • That's the one sure way to win an election: kill your opponent.

  • Now that's how you deal with crooked politicians.

  • I always thought of this scene that Bill who always respected McGinn and would have happily fought him outright now seeing that McGinn has become a politicion hates him more than ever and doesent think he deserves to die fighting and proud. But with a giant fucking knife in his back.

  • Coward

  • @specialfx34 ya really that was sloppy..

  • Watch @1.16.As the man goes down after being hit with the hatchet, he pushes his batton intentionally right into Bill's path so Bill doesn't have to move to get the batton and finish him off.Abit of a movie mistake.

  • EPIC ACTOR

  • fucking coward bastards

  • Damn fine lookin steak

  • LOL

At 1:10, when he throws the axe, you can see the axe fall to the ground to the left of the frame, just in between Walter and the door. The prop axe was already planted in Walter's back.

  • Bills character stood for every single thing that was wrong and still is wrong with the world, that is why Scorcesse created the character.

"Patriotism at it's worst creates conflict, we are just beings inhabiting a land mass we have finite knowledge about"

    We are all human beings

  • @2frey84 that's rather dismissive. bill was a much more complex and robust character than just "everything that's wrong with the world".

  • @2frey84 that's rather dismissive. bill was a much more complex and robust character than just "everything that's wrong with the world".

  • @2frey84 Yeah but he does have a wicked awesome mustache.

  • @2frey84 try saying that infront of bills face XD

  • This was the only time I hated Bill. This was such a cowardly act.

  • @MckyMseNTarotCrds More prideful than cowardly if you think about it.

  • Two coats!

  • i bet jake lamotta wouldn't like the way the butcher cooks steak

  • @kingcaesar5 Wait. He would like it, wouldn't he? Wasn't Jake bitching at his wife for cooking it too long? "It's like a piece of charcoal", I think I remember him yelling. He like 'em rare, like Bill the Butcher. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's how I remember it.

  • @MckyMseNTarotCrds yeah, you're right, i miswrote, if thats a real word.

  • *tap tap tap tap*

  • wtf what happened to the fart voice?

  • Mcginn would've easily beaten The Butcher

  • Damn that's a sharp knife he cuts the steak with...

  • What a dumbshit, he could have take down the butcher easily in a hand to hand fight, instead he choses to negotiate like he was a congressman

  • I love the way ol Bill eats his steak.

  • Bill is so much of a man that he knew the distance from were he was standing was to close for the rotation of the cleaver and the blade would not properly stick, so he ricochet it of the door and ground

  • @SWATshield88 lmao!

  • @1:19 Did Bill The Butcher just break through the fourth wall?

Who was he talking to when he looked into the camera?

  • @ses220688 He was talking to the other barbors.

  • @specialfx34 sorry, i was kinda drunk at the time (realy, I was just arriving from a party) didnt mean it.

  • IRISH PRIDE...DEAD RABBITS(:

  • Did anyone else notice how much Bill the Butcher is out of breathe? He walked up 10 steps and threw his clever and he looked exhausted and breathing heavy. What's up with that? Was this suppose to show that he was getting old?...just sayin

  • @tonyg0123 Yeah, not only in that scene. also in the whole movie.

  • @zeromant80 that had to be done on purpose, but I was just wondering why? Maybe they were depicting his character as a guy who has been through many wars with many wounds and no sleep I would guess, and hence, is in very poor physical conditions? Either way, that seemed a bit too much. lol ......Bill the Butcher, in real life lived only till 34 (1821-1855) while this character lived till like 47 (as he said in the bedroom scene).

  • @specialfx34 take it easy pal. I didnt mean "hey I saw first you..." I was just congratulating you.

keep the good eyes on the movie mistakes ;)

  • The fact is that the knife he taps his eye with is the real knife - Lewis actually improvised that part because he's fucking insane and in character. There's method acting, that's one thing. Then there's the Daniel Day Lewis Technique, otherwise referred to as "badass."

  • @bbkd3b where did you found out that is was improv? because the "You dont know what have you done to yourself" line was infact in the script and that line led daniel day to that knife tapping in to his eye.

  • @specialfx34 Ah... someone else notice it. I was thinking I was the only one when I made my comment. Good catch bud.

  • @specialfx34 omg you mean he didnt actually throw a real knife at him? I WANT MY MONEY BACK

  • @tillerz420 you want a fucking good slap, that's what you want, retard

  • @specialfx34 Wow...I see that. The editors should have been stuck in the back for that shit!

  • that my friends is the minority vote. lofngl

  • mcginn is a retard. Y THE FUCK WOOD U OFFER TO DISCUSS THINGS IN A CIVILIZED MANNER WITH A RACIST NICKNAMED THE BUTCHER WHO LIKES TO KILL IRISH PEOPLE?

  • everything ddl says after poking his glass eye is classic

  • @specialfx34 Probably a stunt double scene, and they fucked up the first cleaver throw

  • I felt like shit when this scene happend, probably the most emotional scene in the film and there is a sad truth to it

  • Quite a rare steak.

  • @specialfx34 Ha! So you can! Good eye

  • that meat was not cooked

  • What does Bill mean by "two coats" after he says that he will paint Paradise Square with Amsterdam's blood?

  • @Sisyphus27 Are you serious? 2 coats means, 2 coats. Hes saying ima fuck him up sobad, and there will be so much blood after i mess him up il be able to paint the town red twice over. Get it! Two coats of paint, two coats of blood. Hope thats clear.

  • like an evil willy wonka....

  • This was my least favorite scene of the whole movie. Throughout the film, Bill comes off as an honorable man who appreciates the laws of combat, and the stabbing in the back seems completely out of chracter for him.

  • Comment removed

  • @Hdawg510 I always took it as Bill getting pissed that Monk wouldn't fight him. That he turned his back and walked away instead of facing him as Bill thought he should.

    Or maybe I'm wrong. *Shrug*

  • bill the butcher is the fucking man thats u noch 45 lol fucking mad man

  • "He was the only man I ever killed worth remembering."

AkA ... The Butcher ... EPIC...

  • Abraham Lincoln just killed Mad Eye Moody

  • So that Bill talks tough guy when he has axed him from behind...he actually comes off as a bit pathetic here, due to the extremely cowardly act.And this scene...Monk becomes a plot device, the Monk we´ve seen through the movie wouldnt turn his back to the butcher, way too survivalminded n smart. And here,he is so naive that he thinks just cause the times have"changed" cause an irish is in office, that people also had changed. Still,a sheriff accepting a challenge..he´d be fucked either way

  • @Sumumabitch78 he also killed the priest from behind

  • Might be the best performance I´ve ever seen. Gleesons was the films second best.....I for one respected the butcher...up until this scene. When he passes Monk in the street,Monks alone, all dressed in irish green,Bills whole body posture changes...and despite having all his boys with him,he doesn´t insult Monk. The fact that he owned the five points n let Monk walk around was a sign of fear n respect. And here,he doesn´t have a word to say,no derogatory provocations....until Monk is down.

  • @Sumumabitch78 I could not agree more. I thought Bill had a sack. What a coward.

  • @Sumumabitch78 I agree, plus he attacked him from behind, a cowardly act. I think Bill was worried Monk would beat him. It wasn't like the butcher to hit a man when his back was turned. After all, he faced the priest again even after he had given him the worst beating of his life.

  • @redenstein This scene has layers. At 1st I felt Monks behaviour was inconcistent with his character, that he wouldnt turn his back like dat..but thats the thing;Bill was known 4 not being a pussy n I think everyone was shocked the first time we saw this.Priest? It was semi-cowardly but it was also streetwar n in the end face to face.I just realized hePREDICTED Monks behaviour. As a newly elected sheriff,it wasnt likely he would accept but he would be more then glad to defend himself.Hence the club.

  • @Sumumabitch78 fuck you !

  • @redenstein Bill has some great one-liners,sure but it´s like me walking up to a guy with a weapon, wanting to fight. The other man has a weapon.I don´t downtalk, provoke or humiliate the man n have NEVER done so.The man wants to resolve the conflict without bloodshed.I accept his peaceoffering. Then with his back turned,I strike him down and start spewing golden one-liners.Then I talk tough...What a pathetic punk I would be. It kinda takes the edge of Bills great lines. Now he´s a big fucking man.

  • "That my friends, was the minority vote."

    BEST line ever

  • @Speedskate2014 i'm sorry, but i have to disagree here. while it'd be pretty rad for him to break the fourth wall (which i usually HATE, but hey, this is DDL man), i'm thinking he's talking to the people in the house. he also looks at the "camera" when he says the "ashes" line. it seems unlikely that martin scorcese would break the wall once, let alone twice. and how is the audience supposed to burn his ashes, anyway? just a thought.

  • I like how Bill threatened to kill Boss Tweed, one of America's most historically corrupt politicians and told him to piss off. What a badass.

  • you irish bugged bastard

  • Whoops! Make that taps his eyeball twelve times... without blinking! Listen at 2:22

  • Boss Tweed: You KILLED an elected official?

You don't know what you've done to yourself.

Bill: (taps his glass eye three times with the point of his knife)

  • Did he just look at the camera when he said that my friends...ect... strange but stil a wonderful actor

  • That stake looks tasty

  • That my friends is the minority vote!

  • you do not fuck with boss tweed

  • this movie is brutal....fortunately things have changed

  • @2fast4uspartan Marginal changes.
