you could tell keith didnt look too good here because if you watch his old grey whistle test interview from 3 years before this he looks like a different man its a fucking shame he died how he did but he was keith moon hed have done something daft and died some other way it was a matter of time
Keith moon was the greatest percussionist of all time. Drummers are guys like John Bonham, Charlie Watts, Ringo Starr, Neil Peart, and Ginger Baker. The difference? If you gave Keith a toilet lid, bucket, trash can, and 2 lengths of wooden dowel he could make it sound incredible. Drums were just a consequence of the business. He didn't drum like a drummer because he wasn't one. He was just incredible.
John Hartman was strugglin because he never heard off them before , Keith should have challanged him to an arm wrestle ... miss u Keith never replace you ! Shawn/Canada
@MrHeitz17 What would you have asked? He asked some questions that were interesting and got some interesting answers that I've never heard in other interviews with these guys.
@tidbittoo Not his questions themselves, but how he keeps a.) referring to Pete as Peter, just bothers me, b.) doesn't seem to know his interview subjects at ALL.
The old dude was just interviewing people he had no time for and certainly no respect for.Nothing wrong with that,he was just doing his job,and at his age and dodgy syrup who would of blamed him?
What I like about this video is that the interviewer didn't try to bait keith and Peter and try to wind them up to say outrageous things! I feel today, that is just what would have happened! But what I also like is that these guys were wilder than Amy winehouse et al but they still had the class to know "hey this is morning TV.... Keep it together!
One of the few rock drummers that never employed a hi-hat as part of his kit....very unorthodox style of playing. That said, it's amazing he could ply at all, let alone so brilliantly:)
I literally have a picture on my wall in my room, which I am staring at as I watch this interview, and it is my gramp sharing a conversation (a laugh) with Keith Moon. Thats fucking cool. Two Legends.
I'll weigh in on this because of no mention of John Bonham. Led Zeppelin actually took their name from a sarcastic remark Keith Moon made about Jimmy Page, and Robert Plant playing in a band together."...that will go over like a lead Zeppelin!"
Thanks for posting this! Not taking anything away from Keith Moon! He was one of the greats!!
You're not shittin us dude? You really rate Markey Ramone,Paul Cook, Mike Joyce, Topper Headon, Mick Fleetwood, Kenney Jones???!!!, and loads more over Keith Moon? I could see a Buddy Rich, maybe a Ginger Baker on a good night but most of the new wave drummers you name are just playing straight ahead rockers with straight ahead beats. Sometime way in the future when all the dudes you like are long forgotten, somebody will still be listening to The Who:Live At Leeds and saying 'thats drums man!'
Oodles, really. Buddy Rich, Marky Ramone, Paul Cook, Paul Thompson, Stewart Copeland, Tommy Vinton, Steve Morris, Mike Joyce, Clem Burke, Dave Weckl, Ginger Baker, Topper Headon, Mick Fleetwood, John Densmore, Boris Williams and loads more (and yes, Kenney Jones is on that list. Listen to the Faces.)
I grew up watching this show as a kid in the second grade 1978. This has been one of my favorite bands of all time. I never saw this interview, Then I discoverved Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac 30 years later, and things changed.
When you take some of Keith Moons' best moments in the Who- the breath taking start to Bellboy, the timpani like thunder from Overture, the whole of I Can See For Miles, you realise that he supplied the explosiveness on drums that other bands didn't have. Put him with a virtuoso on bass and you had a rhythm section unequalled in rock.
Anyone see the Freddie Mercury google page tribute for what would be his 65th birthday the other day?while i agree with such a tribute keith would now be 65 also but its a shame he`s not held in the same esteem as Freddie.7th september 1978 a legend was lost.R.I.P
Respond to this video... Keith Moon was not meant to live beyond his 32 years because he could not go on being Keith Moon. Had he paced himself a bit more he could have, but God would not allow him to go on living just as a parody of himself. It's a sad shame because the Who were the greatest rock band and Keith was an integral part of the band. If you doubt what I'm saying listen to the Who Sings My Generation then listen to Who Are You and tell me the difference.
This sounds crazy, but bear with me: Let's say A.C. was after Christ's death, not birth. Then, we decide it should be after birth. We'd subtract 33 from 2011, and end up with 1978. Which means Keith Moon is gonna die in 6 days.
It's not important, but I just really miss the guy.
I Love The Who - Always has been my favorite. I remember David Hartmann - don't know what he is trying to do in this interview - he appears stupid. Keith Moon is totally honest - not crazy - Too Cool and intelligent for this interviewer. Pete Townsend is obviously trying to educate him - I think Mr. Hartmann should have had a few drinks before this interview and loosened up a bit - maybe then he could be on 1/8 of the level of these two legends.
Its amazing that GMA ever did interviews more than 2 minutes.
Remember folks, this is a mainstream morning TV program. The majority of the audience wouldn't have known much about the Who.
Sadly, American journalism has not improved since 1978.
And, I think the other members were very close to kicking Keith out of the band around this time. He became much too unreliable and unpredictable. How many shows did he miss because he was too wasted? His playing had also declined.
@itsglen9646: Keith's drinking caused The Who to cancel two shows in their career. One in 1973 and one in 1976. You make it seem as if they cancelled gigs all over the place because of his drinking when in fact, he didn't. Secondly, they were not going to kick him out of the band. They were upset at his performance on Who Are You, but so was he. He was NEVER EVER "unreliable and unpredictable". He loved that band more than life itself. You don't have a fucking clue what you are talking about.
Would have been nice if the interviewer had let rip with a fart followed through and shit his pants , then proceeded to eat the shit released from his bowel as a way of showing respect to Pete and Keith along with Roger and John which is the WHO , to show them how much the WHO are loved and forever loved , to let them know the great contribution and spirit of love that they have given and will always give to the world .
ten celebrities have died within a year ofter interviews under this guy and yes he also butchered the info on them as well, this guy is a walking, talking curse.
dont know why the interviewer is getting abuse here for,the guys alright and you can only give one last interview.he got the great keith moons, and theres assholes slating him.moanin faced b.....ds.
@iamobeliskquake - You never know... he never wanted to go to that party... and his last girlfriend said he did suffer from a lot of peer pressure to keep up his crazy image
I know he had some issues but I really think he was trying to sober up...
And it was just that one night...
Breaks my heart....
September 7th coming up.... Rest in peace Dear Boy.... :( xoxo <3
@iamobeliskquake - I just know what its like to feel trapped in a role that people expect you to be... that you wanted to be in when you were younger... for a reputation... then something in you changes and you want to change- but everyone expects you to be that way- and you just can't let people down
His death seemed "SO" preventable "that night"- so it just kills me... especially kind-of understanding how he may have felt....
i liked when keith said he was drunk alot of the time and the interviewer was like "drunk?!" looking shocked ...........you obviousley dident know what keith moon was like.
"We're not perfectionists, we're idealists." That's why The Who is the best rock and roll band ever. Rock is the desperate, primal scream of rage and joy against a world that would judge us for not being good enough. Keith Moon doesn't interpret that idea - he lives it and channels it. Don't get me wrong, there are lots of great rock bands and drummers out there, but hearing Keith vs Bonham and Pert arguments drive me crazy. They are great technical drummers, but Keith IS rock and roll.
you can see the striking difference between a (relatively) sober Keith in this interview and his other behaviour. And to think the drug that killed him was one that was supposed to get him off alcohol.Keith was a comet that burned out.We shall all forever enjoy the marvel of that light.
Here is what I think: Keith Moon looks exactly like Tony Montana as was stated. This guy jinx'd the who. Keith seems worried. So here we go: Tony Montana has a hit on Keith Moon for not properly getting his goods distributed, and Keith smacked all the goods instead. This guy works for Tony, and Tony says to make a real good interview for Keith. After they get it setup for him, this guy and Tony Officially set the hit,. and they take him out. All this leads to Chuck Norris becoming a legend.
Yeah...it appears to me in this interview, that Keith Moon was not about to change his lifestyle anytime soon. Gone a month later.....pity. He was the greatest drummer of all time.
I love The Who...Moon, Townsend, the whole crew. But to watch this video, one has to marvel at the interviewer...David Hartman...one of the best TV ever had...LISTEN to his questions...imagine an interviewer today slamming folks with these questions...beautiful honesty "So, your marriage is just a shambles then..." Imagine that today...this was good stuff. I am only saddened in that Keith and Peter were so damn disarmed and polite...lol Good stuff though, GREAT interview...
Wow, I got a horrible pang in my stomach when Keith sad he wanted to be with the Who for another 15 years. What a great bloke, they're all great blokes
Amen! It's not like you could really hear any direct Moon like playing in Neal Peart with Rush but if you catch Neal's pre Rush home video stuff it's certainly there. The closest Moonish stuff on record is on Fly By Night on the intros to both Best I Can and ByTor And The SnowDog. Check them out again...Moon like indeed!
Sad that Keith thought they would be together when they were in their 50s. A shame he could not be with them. Also, remember this was 1978. Most TV hosts were still bewildered by rock and roll and wouldn't know Keith Moon from the man in the moon.
Moon: Quite out of control I mean amazingly....drunk. Hartman: Drunk? Moon well yeah mainly. Hartman: Right. Wow nice interview..really follow that candid response Hartman! Dickface Slag
The fact they mixed up the names at the start was a good indicator of the interviewers skills, is there a bigger dickhead than this interviewer? Do a bit of research and you might not ask so many stupid questions. That interviewer's job was shameful.
@hirdy6 they put this douch in there as an in studio joke - the oldest, out of it guy..actually all of them look out of it here..look at those bags under townsends eyes....wow. sad video actually.
@FetaCheese222 Yes I get your point, a technical goof at the start but the interviewer was so bloody wooden throughout the interview. I loved these blokes, the way they took the piss out situations like this and the interviewer who almost got an erection when he thought he had a scoop when Keith told him they had blued before the interview and refused to be together for the interview.
its 2 bad we now see the decline of charlie sheen.....you can tell when some people are not gonna make it. sadly i can see it in keith moon right here.... he just was not going to be around much longer
Yea ALIVE, Maybe I was just kinda holding hope that Moon & the Ox were still around just in rehab all this time. Neil is beyond the best living and performing drummer. I saw him in 1976 for the1st and I'm going back for the 32nd time this June in Phoenix. In past years I've bought tickets on the side and behind the stage just to focus on the Professor...I'm with you on the alive stuff...corrected. MOON the Lune is still my fav though! His work on the re-issue of Live at Leeds...untouchable!
This is so sad. I remember being 18 on a booze filled vacation on the Daytona beach boardwalk when Who Are You came blasting out after the DJ announced it as the new song from The Who's new LP. It was 8/21/78 and it was my birthday and I was shouting the praises of the The Who for all to hear around me! What a great band! Weeks latter when I was back in Chicago at work at my "Dirty Job" that I got the devastating news about Keith...sad indeed. Thier fantastic music is still fresh!
you could tell keith didnt look too good here because if you watch his old grey whistle test interview from 3 years before this he looks like a different man its a fucking shame he died how he did but he was keith moon hed have done something daft and died some other way it was a matter of time

Yeah!
Who could even remember 15 years? Really!
Absolutely amasing! 1978 wasn't even more than 23 years ago.
How is it even possible, to watch it any more?

Here is what I think: Keith Moon looks exactly like Tony Montana as was stated. This guy jinx'd the who. Keith seems worried. So here we go: Tony Montana has a hit on Keith Moon for not properly getting his goods distributed, and Keith smacked all the goods instead. This guy works for Tony, and Tony says to make a real good interview for Keith. After they get it setup for him, this guy and Tony Officially set the hit,. and they take him out. All this leads to Chuck Norris becoming a legend.

KEITH MOON SEEMED FUN!!? SORRY HE HAD TO OVERDOSE YEARS AGO!

Incredible how composed and in-control Keith looks here. But he's still the funny chap we know and love.

did the interviewer say "this is Keith, in the red shirt, and this is Peter"? hahaha

Check them out again...Moon like indeed!
keenanX1 9 months ago
Sad that Keith thought they would be together when they were in their 50s. A shame he could not be with them. Also, remember this was 1978. Most TV hosts were still bewildered by rock and roll and wouldn't know Keith Moon from the man in the moon.

Moon: Quite out of control I mean amazingly....drunk. Hartman: Drunk? Moon well yeah mainly. Hartman: Right. Wow nice interview..really follow that candid response Hartman! Dickface Slag
hamskipper1 10 months ago
The fact they mixed up the names at the start was a good indicator of the interviewers skills, is there a bigger dickhead than this interviewer? Do a bit of research and you might not ask so many stupid questions. That interviewer's job was shameful.
hirdy6 10 months ago 32
@hirdy6 they put this douch in there as an in studio joke - the oldest, out of it guy..actually all of them look out of it here..look at those bags under townsends eyes....wow. sad video actually.
oatstao 5 months ago
@hirdy6 That's just a technical thing. The interviewer said "That's Keith in the red shirt" to correct the mistake. It's not his fault.
FetaCheese222 5 months ago
@FetaCheese222 Yes I get your point, a technical goof at the start but the interviewer was so bloody wooden throughout the interview. I loved these blokes, the way they took the piss out situations like this and the interviewer who almost got an erection when he thought he had a scoop when Keith told him they had blued before the interview and refused to be together for the interview.

for 37 folk to dislike this out of 599,922 views is not bad a t all, but they are still fucking wankers.
The last interview by the late great Moon can never be disliked by any Who fan, so these fukkwits should not even have been watching.
