The CO2 that nature emits is balanced by natural absorptions by the ocean and vegetation. Human emissions upset the natural balance and are causing the accumulation of CO2 in our atmosphere, since not all of our emmisions are absorbed by nature. CO2 concentrations have already risen to levels not seen in at least 800,000 years.

It is possible to help increase the growth of some plants with extra CO2, under controlled conditions, inside of greenhouses. It is based on this that 'skeptics' make their claims. However, such claims are simplistic. They fail to take into account that once you increase one substance that plants need, you automatically increase their requirements for other substances, such as water.

At the moment, polluters don’t have to pay for the pollution they produce. Currently there is no incentive for them to cut their pollution. Under a carbon price, the companies emitting the largest amounts of pollution will pay for every tonne of pollution they emit. The more a company pollutes, the more they pay. Those lowering their pollution will be rewarded – through paying less of the carbon price than their competitors.

A carbon price needs to be the centrepiece of any policy designed to reduce emissions at the lowest possible cost. An emissions trading scheme, starting with a fixed price, is the best instrument for long-term emissions reductions.

@ikt123 Industrial relations reform does not require a mandate.Both Labor & Liberal Governments have been changing the industrial landscape with out referendums or election mandates for 100years.When it comes to introducing tax reform.At least Howard had the guts to take the GST to an election.For which he was re elected and 10% GST became law.Replacing the 22% sales tax on most goods.Your dumb as a basket of arseholes JuLiar wants to tax us all another $800 in the first year on a total fraud.

The ALP should be ashamed of themselves. This has nothing to do with Climate Change and everything to do with anti-social political ends sought be the Greens.

CO2 limits won't cool the planet, but they can make the difference between continued accelerating global warming to catastrophic levels vs. slowing and eventually stopping the warming at hopefully safe levels.

@radiantcold Yes, that's a very interesting idea, but how does an emissions trading scheme reduce those levels of CO2? Simple answer: it doesn't. If you doubt my conclusion just look up the European scheme to see what a failure it is.

Yes, there are often teething problems with far-reaching economic reforms. But the fact remains, currently there is no incentive for polluters to cut their pollution. Under a carbon price, the companies emitting the largest amounts of pollution will pay for every tonne of pollution they emit. The more a company pollutes, the more they pay. Those lowering their pollution will be rewarded – through paying less of the carbon price than their competitors.

@radiantcold Of the top 500 polluters the majority are transport companies. These companies operate large combustion engines to enable air, rail, sea and road transportation. What do you expect these companies to do in order to gain the economic advantage, the development of Solar locomotives? I understand that you want to do something about "dangerous climate change", but supporting the ETS is a thumbs up for rises in the cost of living with no upper limit and an inflated floor price.
