  • I'm just glad it's gone.

  • fantastic

  • I know it's over now, but this still made me cry thinking of all the years of hiding they had to do.

  • To see just how far and how quickly attitudes have progressed in our nation's military since this exhibit was staged, take a look at the YouTube video:

US Navy's Traditional First Kiss Given to a Same-Sex Couple " North America is a Proud Nation " by Aniconicx

  • This photography exhibition demonstrates just how important it was that "Don't Ask; Don't Tell" be repealed. It has been consigned to the dust bin of history, and it needs to stay there.

Now, it is time to repeal "The Defence of Marriage Act," and to pass full employment protection for all Americans at the federal level. The war for full human rights is not over, but it will be won!

  • why is it that gays and straits are cnsiderd 2 tottally different kind of person?! it dosent make sense!! your treated all normal when everyone thinks your strait but oh God stay away from the one harmless gay whos no more scarier then you are i dont understand the difference between his/her abillty to serve this country!! its just sick and messed up.

  • 16 Christians(Muslims?) gave this video a thumbs down. What do ya bet?

  • The pictures in 0:45 and 1:00 just had the words "is this really worth it....?"

  • This makes me so happy because I'm military, and and I'm glad that DADT is done, I have 4 guys in my unit that are now able to feel at home and open with us. A unit is a family and you should be able to feel comfortable with those people.

  • @Peaches9196

I am so glad that you wrote this, for it brings a personal perspective to this whole matter that is lacking much of the time. Thanks for pointing out the reality of the situation and how it affects soldiers and the units with which they serve.

  • This is so beautiful, yet so heart-breaking at the same time. To think that those who put their very own lives on the line every single day, just so we can hop off to Starbucks and discuss such stupid topics, were trapped in their own skin for the longest time is really upsetting to me. I'm so glad DADT is finally dead and gone. These people, these guardians, are so brave and strong. If any of you read this I hope you don't let anyone get you down, you are perfect just the way you are.

  • Absolutely amazing!

  • Amazing

  • You same gender loving soldiers, find your love don't be like me a retired officer who is also same gender loving with all the material possessions but old and alone.................

  • It should bother us greatly that our society is more comfortable with the image of two men holding weapons than of two men holding hands.

  • @tbelp Wow! That such a profound statement! Thank you so much for posting it!

  • These soldiers were dealt an incredibaly emotional blow by DADT policy, yet they were determined to remain strong. I think that they handled it remarkably well, considering what they must have been confronted within the military lifestyle.

  • @raceman73200 *Yawn* Oh shush you silly little child and go and play with your God somewhere else.

  • Comment removed

  • This situation reminds me of black service members who served their country honorably, even though they were discriminated against.

  • Awww this video is so touching! I'm glad the DADT policy is gone!

  • @1MRBENNETT1 There is no such thing as the "gay way". There's nothing to "agree" with. Being gay is no more of a choice than being straight with. Even though you're not meaning to be offensive, the fact you feel the need to send a "message" to gays to be "professional" says enough itself. They are no more or less professional than anything else.. The only thing that separates them is who they find attractive.

  • @motionapplied In 2012, the 21st century, we are still teaching people to not hate others based on something they cannot change. Doesn't that make you just a little bit sick?

  • @motionapplied If you feel like this why are you on this video?

  • i must ask, the consercatives are now making a big thing about gays in the military. What difference should it make..They are US citizens. Do any of the congressmen and senaters believe that in the Normandy Invasion or Iwo Jima, that anyone cared if their fellow soldier was gay. The bible belt conservatives are the reason so many people have lsot respect for this country. At one time i loved and respected the US,,not now.. Would give 10 yrs of my life to leave the US for Europe.

  • @motionapplied No, it's not. It's just ridiculous that the US ever had this policy.

  • @IMawesomerthanyo You're right.. and wrong. It's entirely ignorance or fear. People don't understand, or choose not to. And religions are so far diluted from their quintessential values that their own holy books aren't encompassing icons of each religion.

Support the Troops! You may not agree with our nation's reasons for war, but support the men and women putting their life on the line! Boycotting the effort won't save lives, nor will it bring troops home.

  • @motionapplied Hmmm, I totally agree.

  • @IMawesomerthanyo It's really great to now that there are Christians capable to understand or at least to be open about gay people. Thank you very much for your coment! Unfortunatelly, I have to tell you that not everyone it's ok with black people, racism still present nowdays. I believe that it would take almost the same time and hard work by the gay community that it took by the black one to be able to be accepted by society.

  • Beautiful photo work.

  • cnn can be EXcellent journalism when it wants to be. THIS must be one of its wants to be

  • The music sets the mood. Perfect! Finally, the former real silent service is now heard. Yes, we've always understood isolation, loneliness, pain and anger. Home run Mr. Sheng!

  • These images are so powerful. I wanted to serve so badly when I was young but I knew that there would always be that dishonorable discharge hanging over my head. It makes me cry to see these photos because of the regret and rage of the past. Good luck to all of the young gay men and women who can now serve freely. Things do get better, as the repeal of DADT has proven.

  • Great video. Well done.

  • Can we get a "where are they now" photography project? "Post DADT"

  • @walshamite you realise that this policy is no longer in place?

  • In Britain and Europe, gay people have an entirely integrated armed force role. Like gay police/firemen, gay people focus on their work. Straight Americans have to ask why their country is decades out of sync with other Western countries. Is America truly different deep down, in its irrational mindset, to the gay-killing countries they judge harshly, such as Saudi Arabia and Iran? Gay servicemen have always existed. In Europe, they can relax, be themselves. In the US, they still live in fear.

  • @walshamite America has a tendency to "hate" on minorities. Now Atheists are their primary target to hate on.

  • @walshamite

More and more I think about going to Europe.

  • thank you for doing this i am happy some one stud up for us i am a us military soldier

  • thank you. such a moving, and emotional video. great work.

  • Thankfully, DADT is dead. I know and have known many gay service members over the years - some of very high rank. It is great to see they no longer need to hide.

  • this is amazing.....wunderschöne BIlde mit viele bedeutungen...wir lieben euch...weiter kämpfen !

  • strange society where. it is OK to kill other men but not to like them. Pretty fucked up, don t You think?

  • @g50101 thnks, ye i was planning on staying till end of school, i will have alook thank you. x

  • My heart goes to all the service men and women who risk their lives to save their countries yet cannot reveal their sexual orientation without fear of discrimination. Thank god Obama saw sense to ditch the 'don't ask don't tell' rule.

  • @IMawesomerthanyo

i have to agre with you

  • Wow there rly touching, im gay nd i rly wnt to join the army, im 16, but im way to scared to do it, what do i do?????

  • @drakeybabe Finish high school first, please. Then maybe think about the airforce or navy. With a high school diploma, you will be better off for advancement.

  • @drakeybabe Don't be afraid, just do it. There's probably loads of men and women in the forces, and others wanting to join who share your fears and concerns.

  • @drakeybabe You don't have to be afraid anymore. DADT has been repealed. You can serve openly as a gay man. Be proud. A lot of people have fought a long battle for your generation to be able to serve. My generation had to serve in the closet, or give up their desire to serve their country. I wanted to join the Air Force when I was your age, but knew that I would not be able to stay closeted for so long. Good luck to you.

  • @drakeybabe Listen to g50101.

  • made me cry :(

  • I am at once saddened and empowered by this. I have closure though. The healing can begin.

  • Good on em for removing the 'dont ask dont tell'' rule.

    Everyone deserves love.

I <3 the one where there holding hands.

  • thanks for putting this on amazing men do amazing stuff for our freedom but were is there freedom to be ho they are i am glad to be gay and i have struggles but hey i have freedom because of them xxxxxxx

  • Really powerful images. Even with DADT over now I still think these pictures will sure as a good reminder of the people who fought and suffered before and during DADT.

  • Even thought DADT is over now, I believe that these portraits still deliver an important message.

  • yes. i to got choked up. its sad that even now that the dont ask is no more u still have to hide in a way cause u still dont know what they(the government) might do to you. but anyhow, love the clip, very powerful

  • DADT is over now, the nightmare is just a memory;sure! How many tears and even blood caused, must be forgiven but not forgotten.God bless America

  • i just love it :) made me cry :(

  • this is the most beautiful thing i have ever seen in the entiredy of my existence.

  • BEAUTIFUL photos, some how i have a feeling of needing to hug thes people!

People in US say thy living in god`s own country so please remember thes:

    >what you have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me<

  • @christianIV Yes, well, the USA says "Separation of church and state" yet add "god" to the pledge of alliance and have "god" on US currency. Remember nothing!

  • A lot of the images portray sadness which isn't the case for everyone. I got out of the military in Feb of this year and even though I couldn't be who I truly was, I wasn't sad or depressed all the time. They are powerful images but they can be a little misleading at times.

  • AWESOME and incredibly BEAUTIFUL photos!!

DADT is dead, FINALLY (DOMA is next).

I don't care their skin color, I don't care which religion's god they may choose to worship and I REALLY DON'T CARE who they welcome to their bed. I care they do their job well and BE SAFE doing it because we want them back here safe, sound and ASAP.

HATE the war, HATE the war maker but never EVER hate the warrior that fights it.

  • FUCK THE "DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL" POLICY

  • this is soo touching!.. i got the chills when i saw the one of the soldier jumping on the bed!

  • I was gay the whole time i was in the USAF and not one day didnt go by that i didnt worry about being kicked out. it is a horrible feeling.

  • @RandolphAgarn1 I Love You... Just Had A Feeling To Write That To You Even Tho I Dont Know Ya LOL

  • @steph2buysell out of all these post it's strange you picked mine. thanks. ya know me know.

  • amazing

  • DADT made me ashamed to be an american. The homophobes in this country make me ashamed to live in America. What did gays do to you that would give you such hate? Why do you believe in an imaginary person in the sky if they can't send down a set of rules himself? People wrote the bible, who is to say they didn't add their own thoughts.

  • Being gay and about to go into the military on active duty, I have a connection to this, which in the end I ended up crying :'c This is beautiful and sad all in the same.

  • Thank God the dark days of DADT are now history ....

  • I'm happy they don't have to hide anymore. Good riddance DADT!

  • How fucking sad that these people may have given up their very lives for a country that hates them so much it wouldn't let them be open about who they were and who they loved.

    RIP DADT!!!

  • @chubsta2001

I agree. They give their lives for a country who is blinded by their hate and bigotry. They deserve respect and should have their rights just like everyone else. It shouldn't take revolution to make everyone realize that.

  • @chubsta2001

Sad true, being there, gone through that!

Thank you, I apreciate your words, I wish you well!

  • I'm not sure I see the beauty in this, but it's brilliantly sad, moving and effective. It definitely is art that makes a deeply meaningful statement.

  • i would love to get copys or prints if there are any

  • if u are a man or woman serving in our armed forces u need to know that every real american loves and respects u no matter what. u guys and gals are the greatest part of what is america. good luck and thnx again

  • Nothing beautiful about serving, but WOW. its amazing how the FATHERS of military (who we all are pissing on now as we rage wars on false motvies) Were mainly GAY men in the military, or even it was expected for men to become gay in the military, like in Rome, Sparta. etc

  • I was a victim of Dont Ask, Dont Tell. I'm bisexual, Iraq veteran and a suicide survivor. My chain of command denied me help for my ptsd, due to a few incompetent so called friends whom outed me. I have applied for the discharge review board and will fight to the tee for my benefits!!!!

  • @TheActionheat Gays had it worse than bisexuals.

  • @jodelleferlandfan1 you got evidence to support that claim? And by the way, i never made any claim that bi's had it worse than gays. and to be blunt, we are in the same battle "equality".

  • @TheActionheat Evidence? Yes: bisexuals can have straight relationships, gays can't. Bisexuals can pretending to be 100% straight, gays can't because they don't like the opposite gender. Anyway, bisexuals ALWAYS end up in straight relationships soon or later. Bisexuals can live in the "straight world" so it's more easy for them, they have advantages that gays don't have. So yeah, bisexuals definitively had it more easy.

  • @jodelleferlandfan1 accurate; however, we still fight for the same thing "equality". and did you know, as a former servicemember, it didnt matter if i was in a str8 relationship, i was wanted as if i was a criminal? i know a bi dude who is in a same sex marriage. And bisexuals do get persecuted. sad to say, they're persecuted by gays because...i really dont know why...its a reality check for me, especially while in the uniform. One of my OUTers was gay and i never slept with him nor spoke to him

  • @TheActionheat The bisexuals are persecuted by gays because most of the time, they use gay people for fun (sex) and tell them to fck off when they find a girl ( or a boy for bisexual girls) in order to have a "normal" relationship and "straight" advantages. It happened to me and my friends A LOT. Bisexuals people can be very cruel to gay people when it comes to relationships. I honestly think it's why the gay community hate bisexuals.

  • @jodelleferlandfan1 YOU HAVE SPOEKN WELL; However, I must charge you not to use Bisexuals as if you're refering to ALLL OF US. Because, realt talk this bisexual knows whats its like to be fucked over by gays. You know "some" gays use bisexuals because of the masculinity and when its time to defend for themselves gays get intimidated by it because he/she isnt "gay enough". I'm talking from experience, butim not using the word GAY as ALL GAYS, but "some.

  • Incredibly powerful, moving imagery.

  • I'm proud to serve... glad DADT is pretty much over

  • Beautiful pictures. Let's hope this ridiculous policy doesn't go on for much longer.

  • The knowing your Confined to your Self and no one eles, The lonelyness and without a dout, No one to realyy turn to. Its to much for some Peopel. I love my partner as much as he loves me back, Love the PERSON Not the GENDER.

  • i really don't understand peoples problem, i'm gay and i found out who my real friends were aus i lost some but i grew closer to my REAL friends...HECK, my best friend know i'm pretty much in love with him but he never treated me any different then before he knew i was gay. here in holland fortunately being gay isnt as big of an issue then in the USA but we still have problems here. i hope 1 day we will get the same rights as any straiht person world wide. STOP HATING START LOVING!!

  • Thanks for this project. I am a gay service member who is currently serving in the army so I can relate to these pictures.

Thankfully we are almost there; our unit just had our DADT repel training which was encouraging.

Thanks to everyone who made repeal of DADT possible.

  • 1.14 photo is very sad

  • our shunned heroes

  • America the land of the free? Hang your head in shame America. To be closeted and in the military in this way is also like a prisoner of war.

  • @ricemilk fool, it's been legalized here

  • @ricemilk Couldn't have said it better. This talk our leaders shove down our throats here in the USA about being free is bull..Starting wars in the name of "freedom" and then using flimsy excuses to discriminate against gay people is such backward thinking. Hypocritical government!!

  • Beautiful work and very moving

  • is there a way to see the images online in a gallery as in Ireland

  • Beautiful. Thanks for posting this. Maybe now that DADT has been repealed this can become an artifact of days gone by.

  • Very moving - hope this movie makes a difference to remove another layer of discrimination.

  • Repeal it and sign it already!!!! We've waited long enough.

  • so proud to be part of this project.

  • STILL WAITING...WAITING...WAITING FOR OBAMA TO SIGN A MORATORIUM!!

WHAT IS HE WAITING FOR?? SIGN IT NOW, OBAMA, AND AT LEAST PARTIALLY KEEP A PROMISE FOR A CHANGE!! ('change' > ironic, eh?)

  • Thank you for this.

  • 20 years of service gone because of DADT? That has to suck >.>

  • Awesome!!!!!

  • powerful...for all of us who must live in the closet

  • Thank you for telling this touching story. Hopefully this will help open some minds.

  • As the saying goes... it's hard to hate someone whose story you know. Thanks for telling part of their story.

  • Please travel the country. I would absolutely love to see these pieces in person.

  • Wow! The images and the stories made me choke-up from outright bawling. I hope this exhibit travels the country.

  • Beautiful piece. I would love to see the exhibit.

  • Deeply moving.

  • That's crazy. I want to go see this exhibit now, though.
