Blood Fire Death was Black Metal with some Viking lyrical themes. However, usually Viking Metal contains musical elements resembling nordic music. I can safely say Bathory's Blood Fire Death did not. Like I said here before, sure you can define Viking metal just by the lyrics, but that'd make bands like Led Z, Iron Maiden and many more, limited Viking Metal bands. Blood Fire Death is Black Metal with viking metal influences (which might be wrong to say, they weren't influenced by Viking Metal).

A Viking metal band is defined by their lyrics and theme, if it fits the Viking theme, it is Viking metal. The first "viking" metal song was a Led Z song, after all. A Viking metal song doesn't have to be "Viking" musically, at all. But it sure as hell helps, I'd hate Madonna singing about Vikings and it be classified as Viking metal... :D

My point being, Einherjer is a Viking Metal as it gets, they are just a Viking metal band that merged Viking metal with Black metal, hence the confusion.
