Not only a puncher and brawler, George was also a better boxer than people give him credit for, with a fast and accurate, as well as a very hard and jarring left jab. In one of his very early fights, he split Bob Hazeltons gum open with a left jab. This finished the fight. When you consider George was wearing gloves and Bob had a gum-shield in place, that takes some doing.
Whenever I feel down and in need of a laugh I always come to Youtube and hear the comments of Ali fans such as " he was too quick to be hit " and " he would use his speed to avoid being hit " LOL. It cheers me up to know there are still clowns and jesters in the World and I thank them for being there. Ali had a great chin but any talk of him being hard to hit is hilarious. Take a look at his fights and COUNT yes fucking COUNT the number of times his elusiveness (lololol) allowed him to be hit
Its odd all the Ali fans use his victory over Foreman to cement his reputation as " The Greatest". Foreman and Ali never met again in the ring maybe if they had Foreman would have avenged himself and be regarded as the best. Doubt it though as the charisma Ali has makes it hard for his fans to look at a fight impartially. Ali won fights he simply should not have won Norton III anyone?
Now what would Foreman have done in a second fight differently? We saw in the first round that he couldn't fight Ali in the middle of the ring, Ali kept tagging him and he couldn't touch him, which lead him to begin holding Ali on the ropes to land on him by the end of that round. In the first fight Ali simply adapted and used that very strategy against Foreman.
@periechontology Alis reputation was cemented after he used his mouth to become the most charismatic sportsman perhaps ever. His defeats are never mentioned only his wins. You dont think George Foreman is an intelligent enough fighter to be able to learn from his mistakes in 74?? Foreman was tight in 74 and he never respected the one thing that Ali had in abundance and that was a granite chin. Foreman tried too hard in 74 maybe later he would have had a little more savvy and hold back on the gas
All you're demonstrating from your comments is that you are an Ali hater. Why didn't Frazier "learn from his mistakes" and beat Foreman the next time? The question was HOW would he beat Ali, what strategy would he use? he couldn't outbox Ali in the middle of the ring and he couldn't hut him on the ropes.
The problem was not just that he ran out of gas, Ali was landing more clean shots than he was.
@periechontology Frazier did learn from his mistakes do you seriously think a person losing twice learns nothing? Watch the second fight again Frazier made a better account of himself than in the first fight
No i said why did Frazier not learn from his mistakes AND BEAT HIM.
You weren't suggesting that Foreman would come back and do a little better only to lose again.
As for favoring Ali, all I said was that he probably would have beaten Foreman in a rematch. Anyway, arguing with some guy that has an irrational hatred of Ali for whatever reason is a waste of time. I'm talking Boxing tactics and you're talking about his "charisma". Ill see you.
@penischontology No you arent talking boxing tactics at all. I dont know if Foreman would have beaten Ali in a rematch but I would bet my house he would approach it differently and would bet a substantial sum he would beat him. Ali lost several fights where his charisma got him the victory so charisma is a tactic look at how many fighters make themselves larger than life IT WORKS!! I dont have an irrational hatred of Ali I just dont constantly wish Santa would bring an Ali shaped dildo to me
@penischontologyluvaliscum I dont want to make an enemy of you but I wish you would just view fights as they really are and not let your judgement be clouded by hero worship. Ali means the world to you and I know you already have a reserved bid on his embalmed penis once he dies so I know knocking him is anathema to you but please just look back at his fights. He was and could be beaten and he won several fights despite most thinking he hadnt. Lay down your Ali sex toys and just listen.
@periechontology An Ali hater? You are coming across as a person who desires nothing more in life than to have Alis penis thrust constantly into your mouth.
@periechontology Seriously Penischontology take another look at all the Ali fights and see for yourself that he was easier to hit than people tend to think
If Foreman would have fought in the 80's when he still had the speed and reflexes but developed the skills he had when he fought in the 90's the name Tyson wouldn't be nearly as huge. I am a Mike fan too but Foreman would have been the Joe Louis of the 80's. Things worked out for George financially in the end, big time, so no regrets on his part.
@akosihelbert, I would say Marciano, Ray Robinson, Ali, Joe Lewis, Jack Johnson, Max Bear, Lamotta, Duran, Armstrong. just to name a few. pound for pound im with you on that one. heavy weight, Marciano. top 5 heavyweights Ali, Ezzard Charles (who killed a man in the ring) Gene Tunney 66-1 professional fights, Joe Lewis, Marciano
@oporciuncula I agree, as Tyson was a favorite of me, and Foreman too. Unfortunately, George wanted this fight, but it have never been done. May be I would have better loved to see a 46 year's old Foreman against a 46 year's old Tyson :) Impossible, sure, but i would have loved it.
Foreman fought with just pure brute strength, He didn`t even know how to throw any traditional punches like a jab or a right cross or standard left hook, He just threw wild and sloppy shots anyway he could.. But the older he got he actually became a better fighter, He learned how to pace himself and stayed more relaxed and saved his energy for later rounds
People were impressed by Tyson's power, but I still believe Foreman could have KO'd a prime Mike. Tyson never faced someone as strong and powerful as him; and George is. And of course he never faced someone as skilled as Ali.
Muhammad Ali is above them all because he had all the repertoire. I read people saying "Tyson would have sent Ali to a coma"... That's because they are a bit scared inside them of Mike's exhibitions.
Mike would have never reached Ali with his full power.
What makes Foreman greater than Ali is that he turned his life around and then came back. Even though he was old and fat he could still win fights, for me he is the greatest, not a technical or tactical fighter but a good old fashioned brawler, I just wish the Klitschko's would try to emulate him.
Tyson was nowhere near George Foreman. Unlike the tomato cans Tyson knocked out (before he got his ass kicked by the best fighters of his era later on), Big George is crushing some of the best heavyweights of all time here.
Foreman is the best hard puncher ever! I think the 40+ year old George was waaaay better then the young one, his jab was the best next to Holmes and he wasnt wild, he just looked to kill you! Id put him #3 of all time!
a lot of people say shavers hit harder but george carried his power better and had better punch variety. i'd say there is a three way tie for the best puncher in the sport, between foreman, louis, and tyson.
@TheSakorsky Its all speculative ofcourse trying to assess the hardest heavyweight punchers throughout the ages. The obvious contenders such as Dave Berry, Clarkson Mitchell, Robertson Gutherie and Taylor Woodrow have been mentioned ad nauseum but lesser known fighters such as Gallon Moberry and Petulangio Montegrassio have to be in the mix especially after the Montreal experiment where they both lent their punching power to the latest ( 1920's ) scientific analysis.
@Robstailey Having been ejected forcefully from a Merseyside nightclub circa 1989 I can attest to Shavers power, however being the gent he was he only hit me the once and as he lent over to see if i was still breathing i kneed him in the nuts resulting in a win to me
@akosihelbert ali is a great african, american, muslim hero. He fought for what he believed in and developed his own style and techniques from forgotten boxers. Ali can honestly say that he alone made him self champion. No credit to his trainer and at the age of 18 was already an olympic champion and became pro at a very young age.
@dying2l well you got a point but he's not the greatest. i would believe dela hoya's greater than the "self-proclaimed the greatest" cause oscar is multi-division champ (6-divisions) and also an olympic gold medalist. pacquiao 8-division champ, already pro at age 16. robinson who at his prime had a record of 127 wins 1 loss, considered the greatest pound4pound. this i believe.
your self-proclaimed hero said he can't be beaten. he already lost 3 times by the time he said that + 2 losses after
@akosihelbert First of all the guy insulted a hero and there were better boxers back then. Pacquiao could beat any one with brute strength, because all of todays boxers are out of shape. The same reason why mike tyson was such a great boxer.
If some one beaten the government, stood up for his people and predicted how few rounds he was going to win the fight, become the world champion, then I'd say hes the greatest.
@dying2l no..you're just carried away by his mouth.
he's a self-contradicting, self-proclaim and self righteous bragger. he would not be as famous if he wasn't such a loudmouth. people remember noisy people.
pacquiao stood up to challenges of his time. he is a mouse fighting lions. ever greater than ali.
a rare specimen who swept the world from lightweight to welterweight.
not even the self-proclaim hero can beat that. never..ever.
@akosihelbert Another pacquiao fan? Atleast your not racist. Manny was not that good until he was trained by Freddie Roach who is from ali's time and George Foreman proved that todays boxers are unskilled and out of shape by winning the title at the age of 40. I am filipino so I am not anti asian or any thing stupid like that.
He is hero and it's a fact. He was awarded a medal for standing up for what he believes in, plus he invented modern boxing. How many boxing techniques has manny invented?
@akosihelbert It's the words and his ability to back it up. Maybe if you read a little about other boxers or knew some thing about boxing before trying to argue with me you might have some thing more intelligent to say.
@dying2l U still here!!!!!!!!!!!1 Guys don't listen this 20 years little boy!!!!!!!!!! H e just try to call the attention from everybody; like little cry baby!! He is tring say, Paquiao is the better old time boxer ever: WRONG!!!!! He don't know nothoing about boxing, he just try to be noisy. I follow you; and you do'nt have idea, what boxins sport about it... U just follow in love with Paquiao; but he is ready MERIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED! I am sorry about it...
@CoffeeBeatsTea I agree. Ali was not the greatest. I know HE said that and the media loved the promos etc, including some "friendly" spilt decions with Norton and Frazier. He is mid top 10 for me. "in ring", he squeeked by a lot .....
@aitraining He fought in the toughest era for heavyweights. And he beat the best out there. A lot of fighters have squeaked through to victory. Joe Louis was losing badly to Billy Conn in their first bout until he caught him. Tony Galento, a tough guy but let's be honest a fat beer barrel, put Louis on his ass.
George was probably the hardest hitting heavyweight ever, on par maybe with Earnie Shavers. Tyson had a hard punch, but not the hardest - it was his speed that knocked out his opponents mostly. Imagine a foreman with tysons speed!
@kamjf08 that would be scary if Foreman had Tyson's speed even scarier if he had better stamina if he had all that together with a smart tactics then he would definitely have high chances of beating Muhammad Ali
@chanctonbury63 yeah we all wish guys like Foreman comes back to boxing now but everyone would obviously doubt he would make a comeback when he's 62 years old right now
Lyle fight looked fake and FOreman looked like a a shadow of his former self! Foreman before Ali fight never went down ever!!!! George before ALi fight would destroy Lyle and anyone else except Muhammad Ali!
@whatyouwantow theres no context no cheeky smileys only a pretty unpleasent coment about ali. you say i should learn sarcasm? you need to learn to make yourself clear on the internet
parkinsons has nothing to do his boxing + if you want to be pedantic he barely hit ali at all in the fight and never landed a big 1. ali himself said shavers hit him harder. henry cooper nailed him good and proper when he was young. and norton broke his jaw too
look at the HW fights from 60s-90s and what you will see is two guys storming at eachother, now it is more about not getting hurt, and more defensive style of fighting.dont get me wrong,if i was standing in front of klitscko,i would be hiding myself, but the diffrence is i dont get paid millions for the fights, but they do.it is the same with the nba,i used to be fan in the 90s and early 00s,but now it starting to look like european basketball, and as we all know, this can not do any good 4 THE NBA!
He lost from Muhammad Ali but in my opinion he is the greatest boxer of all tiimes. After I saw the match between Klitschko and Haye I was watching 70's and 80's boxing videos. In this shape (in the videos) Foreman could take on Klitschko and Haye together
@ndzordz foreman would seriously hurt both of them i actually would fear for them especially haye who is quite light for a heavyweight (although ppl says hes small isnt haye 6ft 3"? thats pretty big in anybodys book)
@eatthisvr6 Haye isn't small he is ok for heavyweight. But If Foreman was in his best shape nowdays, he would kill Haye in the ring. Man I haven't seen that strong punch like Foreman's. Although he lost from Ali, in my opinion Foreman is the best in history
@MeAndMyFamily1992 exactly! he never looked like he was swinging for the fences but when they landed you see the bloody mess they left behind. Never quite understood that
Complicated, in all the lists they put others historics guys before him, like Joe lewis, but all the coachs that I have acess told me that maybe there was a punch like his, but never estronger. Big George is the strongest punch in history.
I was just curious, you don't have to put them in order, just give me some fighters besides Foreman Liston and Shavers that you think hit harder than Tyson.
Jim Jeffries, Joe Louis, Lennox Lewis, Max Baer, David Tua, and Gerry Cooney are a few I would name that I'd bet hit harder. Primo Carnera, Riddick Bowe and Vitali Klitschko are my maybes.
@Quidtucenam - All those and Dempsey and Marciano. Tyson knocked people out that wanted to be knocked out. Guys who came to fight either k.o.d. him or lasted the limit. Tyson is most overated heavy in history, even his power is way overated. He hit no harder than Frazier and wasn't half the fighter as Joe.
@Aphoresis Weird fight to choose, since Joe Louis intentionally fought at the lowest weight he could so that the papers wouldn't report it as him 'beating up on some little guy' as he put it.
But can you imagine Tyson trying to land power punches on Conn? His darting in and out and clinching would be a nightmare for Tyson.
Now match up Louis with one of Tyson's opponents, backing up and scared to death of him, making little attempt to fight back. Perfect for demonstrating power.
Yeah and that weight was an over 20 pound difference. But that doesn't even tell the whole story. There is the issue of a person't natural weight tendency. Conn's was lower than his fight weight.
And LOL, @ a guy that fought at 160 lasting more than 1 R against Tyson. Louis Career has plenty of examples of him going the distance or very late against guys who would be light heavies now.
Tyson took out one of the best Light heavies in history in 92 seconds.
But if Louis fought like Tyson, chasing and putting on a lot of pressure early in the fight, even in the first round, do you think Conn would have survived as long?
(Of course, pretending for a second that using the style of Tyson would not have gotten Louis knocked out by Max Baer)
Let's get back to the issue here, as this dosen't really relate to how strong a puncher Louis was. Conn fought smartly, and even still was almost knocked out in 5
But the fact that he was "almost" knocked out actually hurts your point.
watch?v=txDPVMmdNos
Look at this clip of the Conn Louis fight. At about 3:24 Joe Louis is just teeing off on Conn with shots to the head and he not only stays erect, he gets into a brawl with Louis THAT HE WINS. Louis has to hold on to stop the flurry.
Can you imagine a natural 165 pound fighter getting into a blow for blow brawl with Mike Tyson and making Tyson cover up? I can't.
@Aphoresis This is a Louis that intentionally drank as little water as possible to come in at the lowest weight possible. This is a drained Louis.
Can I imagine a fighter at 165 pounds beating the version of Tyson who was beaten by, for example, Williams or McBride, blow for blow? Possibly.
Watch the rematch with Conn. Louis was prepared for him this time, and the result shows it. Would Tyson have won faster? Yes. But that's because Louis stalks, Tyson pursues. Not because Tyson hits harder.
Well first of all, you're comparing a Joe Louis who was 7 years into his career to a Tyson who was 20 YEARS into his career (McBride, Williams). Second, i didn't ask whether you could imagine Tyson being beaten by a natural 165 pound fighter (which I still can't) but whether you could imagine him getting into a blow for blow brawl with one, and being forced to cover up by the little guy like what I showed you on that clip.
@Aphoresis A Joe Louis who took Billy Conn far too lightly and dehydrated himself to come in at the lowest weight possible. The idea is that the Conn fight was an off night for Louis. Do you disagree? This man finished Baer, this man finished Walcott, Abe Simon, Schmelling. On an average night Conn would not have been a problem for a prepared Louis. Like in the rematch.
20 years in or not, I still think Tyson had the physical ability and skill to beat Williams or McBride on a good night.
I don't care if Tyson is a little drained of water, a fighter that ranges between middleweight and light heavyweight is not going to take six shots to the head from prime Mike Tyson, only to come back with his own flurry that makes Tyson cover up.
The fact that this much smaller guy can BRAWL with any version of Louis is unacceptable in establishing Louis as a bigger puncher than Tyson.
And by the way, Tyson would have 40 pounds, not 25, on such a fighter.
Ofcourse it was a bad night for Louis, but the fact that the scenario I described is even possible I think doesn't allow us to place Louis over Tyson in the area of power.
@Aphoresis Well I guess we're never going to get past our opinions, but I'd say that would be to do with things other than strength.
Notably the way they used it. Louis would set fighters up and then ramp up the power, Tyson would come out at the bell trying to bully and look for a knockout right away. We have excellent videos of both styles working out, and the nature of Tyson's style makes him look like a stronger puncher which I still don't believe he was.
@Aphoresis What I'm trying to punctuate is that this is one fight that you have picked and are trying to use as Louis, one of the greatest finishers of all time, not having the power to deal with Conn early.
@Aphoresis Tyson's damage was mostly done by a flurry of punches. An explosive combination. Sometimes these resulted in a knockdown, often they left the opponent dazed for a finishing blow
With Louis' the combination seldom ended without the knockdown, there was no room for that single finishing punch that looks so perfect on a Youtube video. However, they did exist.
For example, he hit Paulino Uzcudun so hard with a straight right that "some of his gold teeth sprinkled down on the canvas"
@Quidtucenam Tyson was good but i think he's and overrated puncher, i doubt he could of punched harder than Vitali Klitschko but he did put some bums to sleep with one hit ko's.
Not only a puncher and brawler, George was also a better boxer than people give him credit for, with a fast and accurate, as well as a very hard and jarring left jab. In one of his very early fights, he split Bob Hazeltons gum open with a left jab. This finished the fight.

Robstailey 4 months ago 2
@Robstailey best puncher in the sport was Julian jackson period!
TheSakorsky 4 months ago
@TheSakorsky Its all speculative ofcourse trying to assess the hardest heavyweight punchers throughout the ages. The obvious contenders such as Dave Berry, Clarkson Mitchell, Robertson Gutherie and Taylor Woodrow have been mentioned ad nauseum but lesser known fighters such as Gallon Moberry and Petulangio Montegrassio have to be in the mix especially after the Montreal experiment where they both lent their punching power to the latest ( 1920's ) scientific analysis.

@Robstailey I agree...Those three hit incredibly hard

@Robstailey and also don't forget Sonny Liston he's also one of the best and hardest punchers in history of the sport.

akosihelbert 5 months ago
@akosihelbert ali is a great african, american, muslim hero. He fought for what he believed in and developed his own style and techniques from forgotten boxers. Ali can honestly say that he alone made him self champion. No credit to his trainer and at the age of 18 was already an olympic champion and became pro at a very young age.
For you to insult Ali is a joke.
dying2l 5 months ago
@dying2l well you got a point but he's not the greatest. i would believe dela hoya's greater than the "self-proclaimed the greatest" cause oscar is multi-division champ (6-divisions) and also an olympic gold medalist. pacquiao 8-division champ, already pro at age 16. robinson who at his prime had a record of 127 wins 1 loss, considered the greatest pound4pound. this i believe.
your self-proclaimed hero said he can't be beaten. he already lost 3 times by the time he said that + 2 losses after
akosihelbert 5 months ago
@akosihelbert First of all the guy insulted a hero and there were better boxers back then. Pacquiao could beat any one with brute strength, because all of todays boxers are out of shape. The same reason why mike tyson was such a great boxer.
If some one beaten the government, stood up for his people and predicted how few rounds he was going to win the fight, become the world champion, then I'd say hes the greatest.
dying2l 5 months ago
@dying2l no..you're just carried away by his mouth.
he's a self-contradicting, self-proclaim and self righteous bragger. he would not be as famous if he wasn't such a loudmouth. people remember noisy people.
pacquiao stood up to challenges of his time. he is a mouse fighting lions. ever greater than ali.
a rare specimen who swept the world from lightweight to welterweight.
not even the self-proclaim hero can beat that. never..ever.
accept the fact. ali's one overrated dude.
akosihelbert 5 months ago
@akosihelbert Another pacquiao fan? Atleast your not racist. Manny was not that good until he was trained by Freddie Roach who is from ali's time and George Foreman proved that todays boxers are unskilled and out of shape by winning the title at the age of 40. I am filipino so I am not anti asian or any thing stupid like that.
He is hero and it's a fact. He was awarded a medal for standing up for what he believes in, plus he invented modern boxing. How many boxing techniques has manny invented?
dying2l 5 months ago
@akosihelbert It's the words and his ability to back it up. Maybe if you read a little about other boxers or knew some thing about boxing before trying to argue with me you might have some thing more intelligent to say.
dying2l 5 months ago
@dying2l or maybe if you stop acting like a knowledgeable boxing analyst and admit you're a clown. then i'll stop.
did ali back it up when he lost 2 times after he said he can;t be beat? wake up dude. you're sleep-typing.
ANSWER THAT HONESTLY AND I'LL STOP..FOR YOUR SAKE

George was probably the hardest hitting heavyweight ever, on par maybe with Earnie Shavers. Tyson had a hard punch, but not the hardest - it was his speed that knocked out his opponents mostly. Imagine a foreman with tysons speed!
kamjf08 6 months ago
@kamjf08 that would be scary if Foreman had Tyson's speed even scarier if he had better stamina if he had all that together with a smart tactics then he would definitely have high chances of beating Muhammad Ali

look at the HW fights from 60s-90s and what you will see is two guys storming at eachother, now it is more about not getting hurt, and more defensive style of fighting.dont get me wrong,if i was standing in front of klitscko,i would be hiding myself, but the diffrence is i dont get paid millions for the fights, but they do.it is the same with the nba,i used to be fan in the 90s and early 00s,but now it starting to look like european basketball, and as we all know, this can not do any good 4 THE NBA!
mariuszwilinski 6 months ago
He lost from Muhammad Ali but in my opinion he is the greatest boxer of all tiimes. After I saw the match between Klitschko and Haye I was watching 70's and 80's boxing videos. In this shape (in the videos) Foreman could take on Klitschko and Haye together
ndzordz 6 months ago
@ndzordz foreman would seriously hurt both of them i actually would fear for them especially haye who is quite light for a heavyweight (although ppl says hes small isnt haye 6ft 3"? thats pretty big in anybodys book)
eatthisvr6 6 months ago
@eatthisvr6 Haye isn't small he is ok for heavyweight. But If Foreman was in his best shape nowdays, he would kill Haye in the ring. Man I haven't seen that strong punch like Foreman's. Although he lost from Ali, in my opinion Foreman is the best in history

@Quidtucenam
Who's in your top 10 for power?
Aphoresis 6 months ago
@Aphoresis I can't make one because there are way too many candidates and too few positions, with no real way to tell who was more powerful.
If there was a gun to my head and I had to [study a lot to] make a list, Tyson would certainly not be top 5
Quidtucenam 6 months ago
@Quidtucenam
You said top 10 though
I was just curious, you don't have to put them in order, just give me some fighters besides Foreman Liston and Shavers that you think hit harder than Tyson.
Aphoresis 6 months ago
@Aphoresis
Jim Jeffries, Joe Louis, Lennox Lewis, Max Baer, David Tua, and Gerry Cooney are a few I would name that I'd bet hit harder. Primo Carnera, Riddick Bowe and Vitali Klitschko are my maybes.
Quidtucenam 6 months ago
@Quidtucenam - All those and Dempsey and Marciano. Tyson knocked people out that wanted to be knocked out. Guys who came to fight either k.o.d. him or lasted the limit. Tyson is most overated heavy in history, even his power is way overated. He hit no harder than Frazier and wasn't half the fighter as Joe.
1899sharkey 6 months ago
@Quidtucenam
I like Joe Louis and all, and he is definitely ranked far higher than Tyson as a great, but punching power vs Tyson?
This is a man that had to go 8 rounds with Billy Conn, who fought regularly at 160 pounds and was known to fight as low as 140.
One of the greatest Light Heavies of all time didn't last one round against Tyson's power. Comparing power here defies every law of Physics,
The credible names on your list are Baer, Carnera, Tua, Lewis, and maybe Klichko
Aphoresis 6 months ago
@Aphoresis Weird fight to choose, since Joe Louis intentionally fought at the lowest weight he could so that the papers wouldn't report it as him 'beating up on some little guy' as he put it.
But can you imagine Tyson trying to land power punches on Conn? His darting in and out and clinching would be a nightmare for Tyson.
Now match up Louis with one of Tyson's opponents, backing up and scared to death of him, making little attempt to fight back. Perfect for demonstrating power.
Quidtucenam 6 months ago
@Quidtucenam
Aphoresis 6 months ago
@Aphoresis You're right to laugh, I retract that.
Conn fought smartly, and even still was almost knocked out in 5
Quidtucenam 6 months ago
@Quidtucenam
I can't.
Aphoresis 6 months ago
@Aphoresis This is a Louis that intentionally drank as little water as possible to come in at the lowest weight possible. This is a drained Louis.
Can I imagine a fighter at 165 pounds beating the version of Tyson who was beaten by, for example, Williams or McBride, blow for blow? Possibly.
Watch the rematch with Conn. Louis was prepared for him this time, and the result shows it. Would Tyson have won faster? Yes. But that's because Louis stalks, Tyson pursues. Not because Tyson hits harder.
Quidtucenam 6 months ago
@Quidtucenam
Aphoresis 6 months ago
@Aphoresis A Joe Louis who took Billy Conn far too lightly and dehydrated himself to come in at the lowest weight possible. The idea is that the Conn fight was an off night for Louis. Do you disagree? This man finished Baer, this man finished Walcott, Abe Simon, Schmelling. On an average night Conn would not have been a problem for a prepared Louis. Like in the rematch.
20 years in or not, I still think Tyson had the physical ability and skill to beat Williams or McBride on a good night.
Quidtucenam 6 months ago
@Quidtucenam
Aphoresis 6 months ago
@Quidtucenam
Ofcourse it was a bad night for Louis, but the fact that the scenario I described is even possible I think doesn't allow us to place Louis over Tyson in the area of power.
Aphoresis 6 months ago
@Aphoresis Well I guess we're never going to get past our opinions, but I'd say that would be to do with things other than strength.
Notably the way they used it. Louis would set fighters up and then ramp up the power, Tyson would come out at the bell trying to bully and look for a knockout right away. We have excellent videos of both styles working out, and the nature of Tyson's style makes him look like a stronger puncher which I still don't believe he was.
Quidtucenam 6 months ago
@Aphoresis What I'm trying to punctuate is that this is one fight that you have picked and are trying to use as Louis, one of the greatest finishers of all time, not having the power to deal with Conn early.
This was an off-night. Nothing more.
Quidtucenam 6 months ago

Aphoresis 6 months ago
@Aphoresis Tyson's damage was mostly done by a flurry of punches. An explosive combination. Sometimes these resulted in a knockdown, often they left the opponent dazed for a finishing blow
With Louis' the combination seldom ended without the knockdown, there was no room for that single finishing punch that looks so perfect on a Youtube video. However, they did exist.
For example, he hit Paulino Uzcudun so hard with a straight right that "some of his gold teeth sprinkled down on the canvas"
Quidtucenam 6 months ago

thamostgangsta12 6 months ago
@thamostgangsta12 He could have but then he'd have started to slow down.
Power wasn't a problem, but for Tyson, the thing that he used most was speed.
Quidtucenam 6 months ago
@Quidtucenam Tyson was good but i think he's and overrated puncher, i doubt he could of punched harder than Vitali Klitschko but he did put some bums to sleep with one hit ko's.
