  • Does anyone know why the NOTAR (no tail rotor) technology is not getting very popular?

  • @LTF85199 money

  • that sounds waay different than the bell 206

  • It sure does, it makes a nice sound. I bet it would sound even better from the inside!

  • N. O. T. A. R. ( no tail rotor) è la mia sigla dappertutto da piu' di 20 anni. Il mio nome è Renato, anagramma di e.notar ( elicottero notar)

  • I'm going to have to seriously injure myself to get a ride....man this is going to hurt.

  • md900 and models alike from MD are pretty unique using no tail rotor, but its also very clever how they dont need to use one, i love the concept of having air being blown through the tailmast, but i still prefer the good ol' tail rotor and fenestron rotor configs =P

  • I actually grew up very close to Kaman, so am kind of used to the idea of non tail rotor choppers. I was actually lucky enough to see the Sikorsky Advancing Blade Concept (ABC) helicopter with coaxial counter rotating rotors. It was FAST!

  • @lwkirk ...bloomfield... :) it was always so amazing how quiet those kmax's are!

  • @lwkirk

Yes, but it had its problems- the complexity of the gearbox, for one thing, resulted in reliability issues.

  • @douro20 they launched one or two main rotors over the years...

  • @FPVsean nothing like the scream of a fenestron! u know the uscg is changing all of them out to ones with a lower noise signature :(

  • @steeltown98

I would consider the fenestron, or ducted fan tail, one of the most important developments in the history of the helicopter. It not only made the helicopter quieter, but also greatly improved high speed maneuverability.

  • they were built in Melbourne Australia at a company called Hawker De Havilland back in the early 90's I know I worked there they were in partnership with McDonald Douglas they didn't build many as the euro copper stole the market with a cheaper price

  • nice sound !!!!!

  • been in one. i win:D

i was helped by londons air ambulance once which uses one of these helicopters, they like it as they can land it in very built up areas without worrying about their tail rotor.

please people GIVE MONEY TO YOUR LOCAL AIR AMBULANCE!!

  • The NOTAR, I believe means NO TAil Rotor, it uses a ducted fan through the tail to counter the main rotor.

  • uses compressed air to counteract that torque. very good idea. no tail rotor=allowed to work all the way around the chopper.

  • how does this not spin out of control? It has no tail rotor to balance it out.

  • @Nickk388 I looked up FAA accident data on helicopters and they say that over 95% of helicopter accidents result from tail rotor failure. This design uses a big fan which blows air into the tail cone and the rudder pedals control a door which blows air out to the side. Air flowing over the tail cone also creates a degree of lift.

  • oooh. thank you very much for the information i did not know that so i appreciate it.

  • Awesome chopper!! how much do they cost? Can just anyone buy one?

  • does anybody know any university in california that i can take a course in avation in?

  • that bullshit

  • md makes the prettiest choppers.

  • does he fly it him self? I painted one of his sea planes back in 2000 and his 757BJ

  • the sound of that turbine screaming and the blades beating in the air gives me WOOD

  • @youngnaztman was just going to say the same

  • LUCKY B*****D ownin that :) i am soo jealous

  • That thing sounds badass

  • Great shot with the mountains in the background.
