this song reminds me of my ex girlfriend from college. i used to sleep at her house and it felt so cool because she lived on her own. when i'd wake up early to go to class/work/home in the cold fall mornings, i'd have to take a highway that is loaded with trucks heading to and from the USA. this song just makes me sit back and think of those mornings.
This song is actually about Waits getting a phone call from a friend who had a disabled car. The friend was taking his date home and his car broke down. Waits came over in the early morning hours and helped the guy take his date home.The crappy car only had reverse, so the friend had to back the car home on the freeway; thus the" cars passing me, trucks are all flashing me."
Thanks to the peculiarities of the UK car registration system my 100,000mile+ Vauxhall Astra is a 55' plate! I have loved this song for years, whenever things are really bad I just have to hear those words "The Sun's coming up, I'm riding with lady luck" to feel good again. I have even specified it to be played at my funeral, which is hopefully a long way off!
I love this version, but would have to disagree that it's the best version. The version from Early Recordings is just so gripping. It's so spacious and forlorn. Reminds me of sad early mornings.
