well done...impressive, and very close. dont wave at your crashes when u have multiples, it looks indifferent, and lacking passion. I would give that a 9.5, very enjoyable to watch.
@lonelypinay22 Waving at the cymbals is not indifference, it is an attempt to stroke them with a glancing hit so that I don't break them. I find that this technique makes the cymbals last a lot longer.
@onefugowie I have sound cancelling, snugg fitting SHURE, in ear monitors in my ears turned down to a comfortable listening level. I'm 44, I've been drumming for almost 23 years and my hearing is fine. And when I play just the drums, I use full cans by Vic Firth which filter everything very nicely. I always protect my hearing. Thanks for raising the point though!
you rock, dude. i wanted to play drums when i was a kid, but the band instructor at my school put me on tuba instead. .... and often, i had to take that tube home to practice. can you imagine what it was like, as a 6th grader, taking a tuba on the school bus. those fuckin' 8th grade toughs made my junior high days miserable..

Great job dude. Maybe you can help me. Im trying to make a video such as this. (I'm a drummer) I have an Alesismultimix 8USB mixer, and a laptop w/ a pre-installed camera. How can I do this?

Dude, once again, well done. LOVE the way you play the intro snare parts, very free-flowing, on time, a little unique, and very YOU...but man, it is awesome~
Paulie, once you become a very good drummer, how hard is it to drum to Rush compared to other artists? I know Rush completely as they are my fav band but I cannot play an instrument so I was just wondering?
For me, it's all about liking the song. If I like a piece of music, no matter how hard it might appear to be to learn, I find it easier than begrudgingly learning something that i don't enjoy listening to. I find certain drummers (neil included) to be easier to learn since I sort of know their styles. Other drummers I would have great difficulty learning, not just because they play complicated pieces (they do), but because i don't like the music -- two that come to mind are portnoy and carey.
Both Dream Theater and Tool have virtuoso musicians and are admirable in that aspect, but I just don't like their creations enough to care about taking the immense effort to learn them and re-create it. To me, playing a Dream Theater song is a technical challenge and I'm certain that I could overcome that, but the musical challenge (that is, the lack thereof) is insurmountable. There are many other instances where this is the case. On other hand, I get off playing simple classic rock in my band.
By far that is one of the best pieces of Rush playing I have heard. I takes years of playing to get it right like this I know, it took me years as well. Keep up the great playing. Bob in Orlando
Paulie, how do you prepare yourself mentally right before you play a song like the Camera Eye? Do you like need time to clear your mind or do you just hammer away at it?
I never warm up. I don't really prepare mentally. I find I usually do better if I just jump right in. Usually, my first take or second is the best of a bunch. If I make a mistake in the third take, I give up for the day and try again when I'm fresh.
As you rightly point out, once you get past the sheer physicality of performing the activity, it IS mostly mental and I find my mind-->hand pipes are most open with no mental preparation.
You have moved me in all the songs that you have done but for some reason the hihat on this song just sounds to raspy and on edge. But that is just me.Plaese don't be mad at me I think that you are a great drummer but it might be just the start of the song that got to me becuase the hihat in the rest of that song sounds great I guess I am just nitpicking sorry.
Perfect, I think the Professor would be proud. I really like how you anticipate the changes and make the transitions from section to section, chord, to chord
Well, I COULD play "kasmir" but I'd probably fall asleep before its plodding 8 and a half minutes were finished. In other words, it's too deathly boring for me to bother. Sorry!
I wonder if you have any interest in Radiohead. Particularly the song "Subterranean Homesick Alien." No doubt the drums would be a breeze for you, but the rythym seems a little tricky to me and I'd like to see it in action.
I can only sum it up as "AWESOME". I've been a huge RUSH fan since 1975 when I purchased their first album......which tips you off at how old I am..........I truly enjoy seeing others have the same passion for this band as myself. Neil is the MASTER of the drum kit...no one comes close. Your rendition is just as methodical and crisp as anyone I've seen play........great work!
Damn man!!! Loved the part where your playing on the hats and the ride and hitting the snare!!! Two questions for you: (1) How long have you been playing; (2) The rudiments/ sticking for those SUPER crazy long signature Peart fills???
I've been playing on and off since 1989. That's 18 years, but there was a period of 5 years when I went to school and lived in apartments that I didn't play at all. And then there was that time... ah hell, a while. But I didn't start until I was 22. It's really tough to start as an adult.
Well like the "grand finaly" fill on limelight. How's that done? Because I see all these guys doing it RLRL ya kno? And their all tense, and it doesn't sound write. And you watch the professor, and it's fluid, and it sounds great!
Well, there's no 'right' way to do stickings for fills, but there are more relaxed/easy ways to do it. I've never tabbed it out, but I think the ending of "limelight" CAN be played with just straight single-stroke rolls, but then, it's all in the execution. I've seen a lot of youtube vidoes on a lot of songs and some peoples' ideas of what 'accurate' is are funny.
Yeah, so I hear. I didn't start till I was 13, and I felt like a "late bloomer". That is, until I found out that Mr. Peart himeself didn't start till he was 13 as well.
You have a excellent ear for Neils drumming. You are able to pick up on each little detail perfectly. I too have tried to play his music but I just dont have the correct number of pieces to come even close to sounding as good as you. You have alot of heart for this band, dont let it go. Get some friends together and just do covers. You sound great keep it up.
that was amazing! the camera eye is such an awesome song. i would've traded 10 songs from the snakes and arrows tour (which was still incredible) if i could've heard them do this live!
I've tried to play this song many times, and I can't get the 5:17 - 5:40 area, it's so confusing and it pisses me off, lol, although I am only 15, I really wanna be able to play the peartmeister, any advise on that part?
I just saw this question. I guess I'm a few months late with the reply. LOL. A hint would be to try playing the bit WITHOUT the hi-hat grace-notes. That is, just play the bass/snare/off beat ride pattern (that's hard enough by itself) and get that down playing with just your right hand and THEN add the hi-hat stuff without the squelches. Then, for the third stage, add the hi-hat open/close. It's a difficult thing to play when you first try it. Good luck!
Wow, awesome job. This has always been one of my favorite songs, I've jammed out parts of it, but I've neve just sat down and played it all. You're sport on throughout the whole thing, it's certainly one of the best videos I've ever seen.
Well well, as I said before, getting better and better each time. The sound I mean. The playing is always great! Your sound tweaking has produced good results; the ride pick-up is much better, the hi-hats and cymbals too. The overall balance of the kit is much improved! Still a bit of work to do for normalizing all the toms though. A bit more low frequency content wouldn't hurt (suggestion; cut down the mids by 3db on those toms). I'll talk to Paul Northfield about giving you a hand with that...
Thanks for the feedback. I really do try to incorporate everyone's suggestions. I'm having a bit of a problem with one tom (the 12" rack) bleeding into my snare mike which is why it's so ridiculously out of proportion. As everyone can tell, I'm not a sound man and I'm literally playing it by ear. One day, I'll have some good sound.
I had a similar problem on my kit, but I moved the snare mic away from the bleeding tom (it's at 10 o'clock now, where as before it was at 1 o'clock). Also, the snare mic is pointing almost straight down and quite close to the drum head (about 3 cm). Of course it all depends on the sensitivity of your mic, you don't want to overload it. But even with the sound you have now, it's WAY better than 90% of drumming videos on YouTube! (but not mine....yet! LOL!)
I think my problem is a sympathetic resonance problem. My 12" tom is tuned to almost the same note as my snare (without the strainer on it) and I think the snare vibrates at its natural tone. I'll experiment with different mike placements, but I'm not sure how I can possibly move the snare mike without it severely impeding my fluidity since it's a clip-on. Again, thanks for your input and your drumset DOES sound really good.
Amazing drumming....Brilliant.

analogkid13 4 years ago
I've been playing on and off since 1989. That's 18 years, but there was a period of 5 years when I went to school and lived in apartments that I didn't play at all. And then there was that time... ah hell, a while. But I didn't start until I was 22. It's really tough to start as an adult.

Now, about those "super crazy long signature Peart Fills: which ones? LOL
Pauliewanna 4 years ago
Well like the "grand finaly" fill on limelight. How's that done? Because I see all these guys doing it RLRL ya kno? And their all tense, and it doesn't sound write. And you watch the professor, and it's fluid, and it sounds great!
analogkid13 4 years ago
Well, there's no 'right' way to do stickings for fills, but there are more relaxed/easy ways to do it. I've never tabbed it out, but I think the ending of "limelight" CAN be played with just straight single-stroke rolls, but then, it's all in the execution. I've seen a lot of youtube vidoes on a lot of songs and some peoples' ideas of what 'accurate' is are funny.

Yeah, so I hear. I didn't start till I was 13, and I felt like a "late bloomer". That is, until I found out that Mr. Peart himeself didn't start till he was 13 as well.

Damn good drumming dude! Nice kit, I had to sell mine to get a car when I was 17 and never got back into it.

You are truly a true musician. I really appreciate your love for it and your talent. Why can't there be more people like you?

You have a excellent ear for Neils drumming. You are able to pick up on each little detail perfectly. I too have tried to play his music but I just dont have the correct number of pieces to come even close to sounding as good as you. You have alot of heart for this band, dont let it go. Get some friends together and just do covers. You sound great keep it up.

that was amazing! the camera eye is such an awesome song. i would've traded 10 songs from the snakes and arrows tour (which was still incredible) if i could've heard them do this live!

I've tried to play this song many times, and I can't get the 5:17 - 5:40 area, it's so confusing and it pisses me off, lol, although I am only 15, I really wanna be able to play the peartmeister, any advise on that part?
kict951 4 years ago
Sorry Kict,
I just saw this question. Good luck!

nice accents on the hi-hats dude...I enjoy watching you play camera eye as if neal peart were playing it himself.Again ,Great job.

i think you were dead on with this song...Good job, man!

Wow, awesome job. This has always been one of my favorite songs, I've jammed out parts of it, but I've neve just sat down and played it all. You're sport on throughout the whole thing, it's certainly one of the best videos I've ever seen.

Damn! You did a song I was going to do.
I better hurry and do the one song I know drummers will not attempt, and it's not what people are going to expect.
Dude, you nailed yet another one, awesome.

Pauliewanna 4 years ago
I had a similar problem on my kit, but I moved the snare mic away from the bleeding tom (it's at 10 o'clock now, where as before it was at 1 o'clock). Also, the snare mic is pointing almost straight down and quite close to the drum head (about 3 cm). Of course it all depends on the sensitivity of your mic, you don't want to overload it. But even with the sound you have now, it's WAY better than 90% of drumming videos on YouTube! (but not mine....yet! LOL!)
thealien666 4 years ago
I think my problem is a sympathetic resonance problem. My 12" tom is tuned to almost the same note as my snare (without the strainer on it) and I think the snare vibrates at its natural tone. I'll experiment with different mike placements, but I'm not sure how I can possibly move the snare mike without it severely impeding my fluidity since it's a clip-on. Again, thanks for your input and your drumset DOES sound really good.
