That's why I wish I was older. Our generation hasn't got anything more to invent than gadgets that make life more comfortable and people less self-determined. I wish I was born in the 60's. So much new to invent, so much great music being played. Yeah, we have good music nowadays but just sparsely.
@TheDevinDevin: Are you asking for respect because you caught the reissue of the vinyl? Would you like to buy an original? Or at least earlier. My albums (and many CDs) collection is complete. Well, then I'm trying to dig out the singles. Can anyone find me "Train in Vain" ON VINYL? (not the reissues box, please)
to me and many many others the Clash were an awesome band - but love them or not? they were instrumental in changing English music and music everywhere, there impact should never be underestimated x

K LISTEN UP PPLS. anyone who accepts teh Clash as good music wouldnt know good music if it jumped out of a bush and kicked them in the junk. the clash r phony, contrived punk rockerz with no real talent. Thumbs up if U agree!!1!
@TheJBprodigy How can you even type the words 'phony' and 'no real talent' in the same sentence with 'The Clash'... i forgive you for you must be retarded!
@TheJBprodigy hahahaahhahahhahahaha you probley listen to justin beiber, taylor swift, katy perry , kesha, lady gaga, beyonce, and guci man, you fagget nobody in the right mind would dare say that lol
@TheJBprodigy "Punk rockers" arn't supposed to have much talent.. not all of them.. comes from the heart and the attitude..that makes it.. so.. ummmmmm shut the fuck up? :)
I always feel sorry for The Clash when I hear this song. By 1979 they and punk were finished and they reverted to tired old London pub-rock songs like this. In fact, this could be a song from Joe Strummer's old band pre-Clash, The 101r's. They should have broke up at the end of 1978 and remained legendary. The myth of The Clash is much, much bigger than they are.
@16881873 There's nothing you can do or say that can stain what the Clash was and is. I saw the legend Joe Strummer himself, live in concert. The truth is only known to guttersnipes.
@HeathInClearLake I saw The Clash twice in 1978 at their peak and in 1980 on the 16 Tons Tour. The marked difference in 1980 from 1978 was there for all to see. They WERE a great band......but burnt out too quickly.
@16881873 Not sure I would feel so sorry for them. So many great tunes on London Calling. Punk was, as you wrote, finished, because it was in the end nihilistic and a dead end. Certainly engaging, but hardly revolutionary. Just listen to early Who - that is the real punk movement. I think the most intelligent lines written by Strummer: 'he who fucks nuns later joins the church' is far more interesting, intellectually, than anything the Sex Pistols ever did.
@yiotispan I don't think The Clash would ever care a fook what I thought, and why should they ? lol Myself and my contemporaries collective memories around that time of London Calling was just the frustration of The Clash reverting to what we seen as regressive "pub rock". It seemed such a waste. Nostalgia, eh ?
@16881873 OK, makes sense now! I just like the way the Clash progressed into something more than just the raw punk movement; they also predicted in Death or Glory with pinpoint accuracy how John Lydon would turn out ;-)...
@yiotispan No problems. Whatever we say about Lydon or the Pistols, it should also be remembered that no Pistols = no Clash either. Those were Joe Strummer's own words. All the best !
@16881873 fact was...punk wasn't going anywhere and especially Strummer could see just that. Jones was very innovative only very narrow-minded Englanders came up and still come up with loadsa bollocks abt post punk...or what punk should be. The Clash took their music out to the world...who's a UK punk band? UK subs? + Pub rock isn't bad tho' it never came back as an artform ahaa ahah...Englandu often don't understand what they have. stuck up band = The Jam. Dead band = The Pistols...
there were loads of punk bands if you can call it punk. punk music does not really exist, punk is an attitude shown through lyrics of a song. SLF were british, from northern ireland, so they were/are british. exploited, i could name more if i sat and thought about it.
@16881873 I think that's very harsh. There are a lot of people who got into the Clash long after they broke up. And they don't carry the baggage of " sell outs " and all that nonsense with them and they just judge the music for what it is- extraordinary. The Clash for me were the first two albums, agree with you there. But if anything, " Sandinista ", if you listen to a lot of music today, was actually far more influential on today's youth. Their punk output matches ANYBODY'S but did much more.
@SuperDsweeney Don't get me wrong, mate. I'm not saying The Clash weren't a great band, they were certainly that......but only for a very short time, imo. I'm not saying they sold out either, others did though when The Clash signed to the major record label CBS, but that's for another day, perhaps. All the best !
Let the rest of the world listen to their Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne, Miley Cyrus, and what ever drug infested/ S.T.D. spreading noise merchant that is popular now days. The rest of us will listen to real, talented and addictive music like this !
Only saw them twice but I don't think Joe ever did the vocals to Stay Free mate. I'm sure Him & Jonesy used to swap guitars when it came round to doing that. If I remember rightly... Could be wrong. Had lots to drink both times ;)
London Calling=worst song on the album (or at least me least favorite) (at the very least the most overplayed song by The Clash!) (or put another way the least underpayed)
@taureanman I tell people older and younger than me this and I get no answer,I really tell them of the 80's and then tell them probably of all time. It's frustrating that they dont even know about it but what are you gonna do ! Long live Rock and Roll, Berry, Lennon and Strummer. Go away britney ,madonna and rap !
Actually, man, ska was invented in Jamaica in the early 60s when the Clash were kids. I mean, I love the Clash more than any ther band, but let's give credit where it's due.
Actually you're both right. He said the words "as we know it today". The reverberation of The Clash fusion as most realised on Lodon Calling just never ends. I'll put my neck on the block (lol) and say SECOND most influential rock album released that year (JD Unknown Pleasures, #1).
And they didn't make as much cash as you think.Ripped off for years and if they finally go some about bloody time. They changed a lot of people's lives forever. I know Joe did mine and I want my kids to get educated - think, think think, about what you read, see and filter the bullshit - I drum it into 'em all the time.
Says it all really. This band changed my life and all my mates of various generations. If future generations listen to this the world will be a better place. Beats listening to the shit they promote as music nowadays.
la gente puede cambiar de pensamiento... no hace falta nacer tarado y vivir asi...podes progresar, y los clash en su carrera demuestran eso, el progreso.
Recently read the Saliewicz biography on Joe, please don't read it if you want to keep your faith unshaken...you can't do a tour called "Kill the Rich" and then send your girls to Bedales, a well posh private school....one disappointed disillusioned Clashman
alot of the rich and famous havent worked a day in there lifes and look down on every 1 else they have a diffrent reality to ours anything they want they get we we get dead end jobs and shit joe strummer knew this so what if he sent his kids to a private school
joe was still one of us he worked and i think at some point in his life he had to squat not sure on that think it was joe could be wrong but any way he never looked down on us
Well the way I see it, which would be worse: intentionally choosing not to let your kids get good educations just to get up your "rockstar" image, or caring more about your kids than what people think, and being a good father?
Yeah, he made cash off the Clashs' success, but he never forgot where he came from
The Clash: fearless knights of punk. Long live their genius.

Recently read the Saliewicz biography on Joe, please don't read it if you want to keep your faith unshaken...you can't do a tour called "Kill the Rich" and then send your girls to Bedales, a well posh private school....one disappointed disillusioned Clashman
timtimfenian 3 years ago
ya, screw trying to give you kids the best education possible..

alot of the rich and famous havent worked a day in there lifes and look down on every 1 else they have a diffrent reality to ours anything they want they get we we get dead end jobs and shit joe strummer knew this so what if he sent his kids to a private school
joe was still one of us he worked and i think at some point in his life he had to squat not sure on that think it was joe could be wrong but any way he never looked down on us

Well the way I see it, which would be worse: intentionally choosing not to let your kids get good educations just to get up your "rockstar" image, or caring more about your kids than what people think, and being a good father?
Yeah, he made cash off the Clashs' success, but he never forgot where he came from

John Lennon number 2; at least he killed himself!
Cheers for the good remark.

Well, aren't we all a bit conflicted? Don't condemn him for choices he made for his kids. He isn't perfect, he's a human.
