Mclaren don't want to replace the F1. If they built a no expense spared car (ie, with Mclaren F1 levels of engineering) in 2010, it would cost a lot more than £125k! It's designed to take on the "entry level" Ferrari, the 458. It's not designed to take on the Veyrons and Zondas. And seriously, this car has devastating performance. Weak is not a word I'd use! The first accessible Mclaren? Yes.
The Ferrari 458 is an amazing car, it is the best Ferrari production car I think the company has ever made. The looks, the quality and the way it goes and sounds is just amazing. The new McLaren MP4 will have to be something fantastic to beat it. The Mclaren is a totally different car to the 458. The new Mclaren F1 will go into production late 2012 early 2013 with the Bugatti Supersport in it's sights. I think Mclaren will be the best sports car company in the World in less than 3 years..

No matter what happens, the 458 italia will be the best in my book. It really is awesome. Its beautiful, fast, has great handling, great sounds, and the luxury. This mclaren has a dumb name to start with. Not to mention its ugliness or its engine which is british, so it'll be unreliable just like all british cars. I'm sure this car will be good, maybe better than the italia but I'd rather have the Italia. I think its by far the better car to have.

this car will be awesome since it has to prove worthy of the mclaren name. also considering its power to weight ratio and the specs, this car should be significantly faster than its ferrari and lamborghini rivals. too bad its set to launch in 2001. this will be quite a long wait

Remember this is only the start, Mclaren are planning to have a whole range operating as soon as possible - this car will probably be their mid-range entry. I have heard plans for a Bugatti Veyron beater as well, and because Mclaren started this whole top speed war off in the first place back in the 90s rightfully they should be the ones to show how it's done.
They have deliberately designed the Mclaren so it looks retrained, they are trying to break away from the super-car cliche of ostentatiousness. And it's not trying to be like the 458 either - it's a Mclaren, they don't want to be like Ferrari and they don't need to - they just want to compete with them, and compete well, like they do in F1. playboys and footballers will buy the 458, people who love cars will buy the Mclaren.

Most of the mid engined super cars look very similar these days, it seems to be a trait of the market. It isn't supposed to be an F1 succesor, the F1 will always be their flagship. The MP4-12C is designed to be a market compeditor. It's british, since when were British cars described as having soul :P I don't think they have looked as the other cars and copied with changes, it's just the way it is.

MP4 stands for Mclaren Prototype 4, the 12c bit I'm not sure about though...MP4 has been the name given to all their Formula One car chassis's since the 1980s. Also Mclaren have deliberately made this cars looks understated, it's not by accident...The car is formed following function - not to attract attention; Mclaren aren't interested in copying flamboyant designs from other super-cars.

In the spirit of the F1; which was the catalyst for a load of future copy-cats (and yes that does include every road car with an attempt at it's top speed record) - The new Mclaren rightly takes the fight to it's competitors and not vice-versa. :)
The 458 is very similiar looking to this car. I prefer the look of the Saleen Raptor. However all 3 cars (McLaren, Ferrari and Saleen) lack the over the top, stop traffic styling that their predecessors had. All 3 cars have a generic look to them. No matter what kind of performance they have, they lack style to stir the soul. I am sure the performance is breathtaking......but you have to have style.
I dont see a 458 when I look at this. Viewed side on the 458 has a very lean front, a lean mid area then it bulges out around the rear wheels. This is much more proportioned and even along the whole car. From the front it resembles the F1 but without the centre detail between the head lights.

Mclaren's project is already well under way: you only have to go onto their website to see that: they're already doing extensive track tests at the Nurburgring, Top Gear's test track, and the Bahrain F1 circuit + they are extending the engine red-line to 8500rpm instead of 7000rpm to get the right engine note. The S5 is still a concept and it's near the end of 09' - most of the articles about it were published in 08' claiming a 2010 release. Seem's unlikely...
Not the point Saleen is not out, similiar stylying of all 3 cars, overly influenced by the wind tunnel. Did the Lamborghini Countach and Ferrari Testarossa look like each other the way the 3 cars I mentioned do? No Individual cars, over the top styling. It's all part of being an exotic. The 3 cars I mentioned will out perform the Countach and the TR, but performance is only 1 aspect of the supercar experience. Generic styling (looks like/ similiar to every other car in that category) is not.

There will be no "CLASSIC" manual gearbox. It will still come with a 7speed twin clutch gearbox with a choice between automatic and flappy paddle gear shift just like you get in the Bugatti Veyron, Maserati, Mercedes, BMW M5/M6, and a number of other high end vehicles.
The original McLaren F1 wasn't released with a classic manual gearbox so its no big surprise that this 12C would stray away from the classic manual too.
The F1 had a 6-speed manual gearbox with a carbon triple-plate clutch. It's just dual clutch systems are so good these days. The heavier, less-powerful Nissan GTR can only beat a Z06 Corvette in a drag race because it can change gear so quickly.
Yes, the F1 did have a 6speed but it wasn't your traditional H-pattern gearbox(also referred to as a "classic" manual transmition). The F1 was assembled with a sequential gearbox which needs no clutch pedal and is infact what your latest E-diff. seen in Ferrari's and Lamborghini's are solely based apon.
Oh and the GTR doesn't only beat the ZO6in a drag race with shifting ability but with its AWD.
Wow. I love how you go out on a limb to mention the LM and the GTR which were both ex-LeMans race cars decomissioned for street use and were KNOWN to come with a 6 speed sequential race gearbox. The only model of the McLaren F1 that came with the classic H pattern was the original F1 itself but thats if you didn't want to spend the extra money for the sequential gearbox. Keep looking for videos and you'll notice that only a few of the regular F1's came with the the H pattern.

Hmmmmm not sure about this car? The Noble M600 seems to have F1 performance this only seems to have 400lb and 600bhp where the M600 (not as good looking) has 650bhp and 604lb at 2500rpm. I really hope this is going to live up to the F1 I just love the look!

No matter what happens, the 458 italia will be the best in my book. It really is awesome. Its beautiful, fast, has great handling, great sounds, and the luxury. This mclaren has a dumb name to start with. Not to mention its ugliness or its engine which is british, so it'll be unreliable just like all british cars. I'm sure this car will be good, maybe better than the italia but I'd rather have the Italia. I think its by far the better car to have.

Mclaren will fit somewhere between the Mercedes SLS and the 458. It will make a good pivoting choice, it's much better looking than the SLS, just falling shy of the 458 - but then again it wasn't supposed to be designed with beauty as paramount. It will be a good engineering face-off between these three. Mclaren and Ferrari squeezing out all their Formula One knowledge - Mclaren wins me over, because their car is far more unique, a revival of pure British engineering.

Remember this is only the start, Mclaren are planning to have a whole range operating as soon as possible - this car will probably be their mid-range entry. I have heard plans for a Bugatti Veyron beater as well, and because Mclaren started this whole top speed war off in the first place back in the 90s rightfully they should be the ones to show how it's done.

They have deliberately designed the Mclaren so it looks retrained, they are trying to break away from the super-car cliche of ostentatiousness. And it's not trying to be like the 458 either - it's a Mclaren, they don't want to be like Ferrari and they don't need to - they just want to compete with them, and compete well, like they do in F1. playboys and footballers will buy the 458, people who love cars will buy the Mclaren.

copied ferrari with some accents of lambo... can't you guys produce something visibly yours? if i had the money, i would buy a ferrari 458. it is more radical and looks beautiful. not saying mclaren is ugly but a bit soulless. the mclaren f1 was a car that differed itself from the crowd of supercars, the only unique thing of this car are the side intakes, the fron looks f-430 esque and the rear is murcielago, only with softer lines. call me a morron, spam me, but this is my opinion.

Most of the mid engined super cars look very similar these days, it seems to be a trait of the market. It isn't supposed to be an F1 succesor, the F1 will always be their flagship. The MP4-12C is designed to be a market compeditor. It's british, since when were British cars described as having soul :P I don't think they have looked as the other cars and copied with changes, it's just the way it is.

MP4 stands for Mclaren Prototype 4, the 12c bit I'm not sure about though...MP4 has been the name given to all their Formula One car chassis's since the 1980s. Also Mclaren have deliberately made this cars looks understated, it's not by accident...The car is formed following function - not to attract attention; Mclaren aren't interested in copying flamboyant designs from other super-cars.

In the spirit of the F1; which was the catalyst for a load of future copy-cats (and yes that does include every road car with an attempt at it's top speed record) - The new Mclaren rightly takes the fight to it's competitors and not vice-versa. :)

The 458 is very similiar looking to this car. I prefer the look of the Saleen Raptor. However all 3 cars (McLaren, Ferrari and Saleen) lack the over the top, stop traffic styling that their predecessors had. All 3 cars have a generic look to them. No matter what kind of performance they have, they lack style to stir the soul. I am sure the performance is breathtaking......but you have to have style.

I dont see a 458 when I look at this. Viewed side on the 458 has a very lean front, a lean mid area then it bulges out around the rear wheels. This is much more proportioned and even along the whole car. From the front it resembles the F1 but without the centre detail between the head lights.

Yeah but where is the Saleen? Mclaren's project is already well under way: you only have to go onto their website to see that: they're already doing extensive track tests at the Nurburgring, Top Gear's test track, and the Bahrain F1 circuit + they are extending the engine red-line to 8500rpm instead of 7000rpm to get the right engine note. The S5 is still a concept and it's near the end of 09' - most of the articles about it were published in 08' claiming a 2010 release. Seem's unlikely...

Not the point Saleen is not out, similiar stylying of all 3 cars, overly influenced by the wind tunnel. Did the Lamborghini Countach and Ferrari Testarossa look like each other the way the 3 cars I mentioned do? No Individual cars, over the top styling. It's all part of being an exotic. The 3 cars I mentioned will out perform the Countach and the TR, but performance is only 1 aspect of the supercar experience. Generic styling (looks like/ similiar to every other car in that category) is not.

There will be no "CLASSIC" manual gearbox. It will still come with a 7speed twin clutch gearbox with a choice between automatic and flappy paddle gear shift just like you get in the Bugatti Veyron, Maserati, Mercedes, BMW M5/M6, and a number of other high end vehicles.
The original McLaren F1 wasn't released with a classic manual gearbox so its no big surprise that this 12C would stray away from the classic manual too.

The F1 had a 6-speed manual gearbox with a carbon triple-plate clutch. It's just dual clutch systems are so good these days. The heavier, less-powerful Nissan GTR can only beat a Z06 Corvette in a drag race because it can change gear so quickly.

Yes, the F1 did have a 6speed but it wasn't your traditional H-pattern gearbox(also referred to as a "classic" manual transmition). The F1 was assembled with a sequential gearbox which needs no clutch pedal and is infact what your latest E-diff. seen in Ferrari's and Lamborghini's are solely based apon.
Oh and the GTR doesn't only beat the ZO6in a drag race with shifting ability but with its AWD.

Wow. I love how you go out on a limb to mention the LM and the GTR which were both ex-LeMans race cars decomissioned for street use and were KNOWN to come with a 6 speed sequential race gearbox. The only model of the McLaren F1 that came with the classic H pattern was the original F1 itself but thats if you didn't want to spend the extra money for the sequential gearbox. Keep looking for videos and you'll notice that only a few of the regular F1's came with the the H pattern.

Hmmmmm not sure about this car? The Noble M600 seems to have F1 performance this only seems to have 400lb and 600bhp where the M600 (not as good looking) has 650bhp and 604lb at 2500rpm. I really hope this is going to live up to the F1 I just love the look!
