Weapons vary greatly in weight, which I've already addressed. Another issue is that I lived 400 miles away. I visited Ithaca twice for wedding planning trips, and we put this together during my spare time in those trips. I'm happy with the result, but there's always room for improvement. The biggest issue is a false comparison with movie-fu, where they have very light weapons, the luxury of multiple takes, and are professional performers. We had to do it in one take and avoid injury & mistakes.
That was Allan, heckling me before jumping up on stage and attacking. We didn't plan that part very well, and the joke didn't work very well (no one had any way to know that the heckler and the attacker were the same person). It works even worse on video. We should've tried to get him a spotlight or something.
But still it was good to watch and a lot of moves were pretty slick, when I watched for the second time I saw the full sway movement too at the beginning of the vid. I understand now that these are not the full weight weapons and that slows down their speed of course.
There are heavier weapons out there, but these are full-weight (but no live blades). The 3SS used is rattan & steel, the dao is about 2lbs of aluminum alloy (from AWMA), and the spear is made of dense, heavy rattan from a furniture store (solid aluminum tip). You have it backwards, though - lightweight weapons move much more quickly, which is why _competitive_ forms are almost always done with lightweight (hollow aluminum) weapons.
Actually, it's Erik. "Kungfujoe" is an old nickname. If I understand what you're attempting to say, I appreciate the compliment of confusing us for professionals, but we certainly aren't. We did perform at Cornell in 1998 (the videos are here), but I can't imagine ANYONE thinking we were pros then (as proud as I am of those first performances).
This wasn't our smoothest fight (it was assembled in only two visits; I lived ~500 miles away), but people also get an unrealistic idea of "full speed" based on the flimsy "performance weight" weapons that are commonly seen. I've always used full-weight weapons, which are slower (basic physics).
Our smoothest fight was probably staff vs. staff in 2000. In all cases, though, some concessions needed to be made for the adrenaline of being onstage and the slippery stage floor.
The joke is lost in the recording. Allen was sitting in the audience, heckling me, and jumped up on the stage from the audience and attacked. As for using hollow, lightweight weapons--that's not something I've ever been interested in.
well, I'm not talking about straight out practicing. this is a performance so performers should not hold back for fear of hurting oneself with actual weapons.
FWIW, we weren't really "holding back." Performance-weight weapons would have literally shattered during this performance. As it is, one of the prior years, we snapped my 2-pound broadsword in two during practice.
yeah... all I can say is I enjoyed the unarmed fight scene way better then the load of crap at the beginning. You could've at least used pvc pipes with foam and a hollow mold of the broadsword. That way you can wail at each other no restraint.
I watch this cuz im a huge fan of suikoden 5!!!

I'm a master in the 3 sectional staff I see a missing movements. The movements of swaying the stick in it's full lenght.
If you sway the weapon in it's full lenght it would take just a few seconds to unable any man with a shorter weapon.

3 Section Staff is my favorite weapon. This fight scene was very enjoyable, and I give it 4 stars. Oh and nice touch with Shadow Warrior theme!
Valkier071 4 years ago 3
that was really impressive but u should put more speed and force into the spear vs three section staff it looked like u were going easy on eachother
hookxups 4 years ago
3 section staff would not have lost so easily too the broadsword...

Fight gets a 3 out of 5, but I'm giving 5 stars because you guys used the theme from Shadow Warrior!

I still don't see why the meditation pose is necessary at the beginning and end of the demonstration.
