i agree with you. you shouldnt pat your horses when they refuse. patting, to them, simply means, they did something right. so basically, your telling them that its ok to stop dead infront of a jump. if you keep patting them, theyre going to grow into a habit. not saying that you hav to scream at them and whip the hell out of them, just let them stand there for a second or two, let them measure up the jump and try again.

I suggest(at the canter)get your hands off the neck of the horse and move with the horse. but that depends if you are doing 2 point or sitting at the canter.

more expensive? it doesnt matter how expensive the horse is you could buy a really cheap horse nd i cld turn out to be an amazing horse. nearly all the horses ive ridden have been cheap and theve all been amazing!!! and as for getting a bigger horse i used to jump a 12.2 pony called hector that beat all the bigger horses because he was small and nippy.

i think they are good riders and are improving. well done :)
