BS, total BS. This scene is supposed to be about Josh's world junior championship with Jeff Sawer, and it is because of Jeff's choice in openings that the game resulted in a draw.
That's Hollywood for you, but at least they had the board set up right and they made it interesting/dramatic. As the real Josh Waitzkin knows, however, the proper way to offer a draw is to first make your move, offer the dtaw and then hit the clock. Only then does your opponent consider the offer. You're not allowed to sit there and badger him verbally, even if you have benevolent motives. Kids (and adults) do this from time to time, of course, but it's wrong.
Kid made the right decision. Only pussies take the draw, at least he knew he was beat instead of having to live with wondering whether he could have won it.
People think that a chess prodigy should be able to see that queen trap, but Jonathan (the kid in the white shirt) was too confident. His arrogance as a player interfered with his confidence, making his mistake an example for oft-repeated chess phrase 'Confidence Kills'.
the first time i watched this movie i was young and i was with my parents. after the scene ended, i shook my head and said "he should have taken the draw"...my parents thought it was funny
Disculpenme yo so de argentina y quiciera decir que el video es espectacular pero quiero pedir un favor no conocen en argentina un lugar en el que pueda conceguirce raitin de ajedrez por favor espero su respuesta
Good scene, but there's no realistic way that that kid wouldn't have seen his king in the middle of the queen's path until he heard "check." I'm a chess novice and I would have seen that instantly.
@TimKraemer - It´s a good dramatic way to finish a supposed difficult game for entertainment of people who maybe dont know about chess, it´s rules or the way the board is designed. Many of the people here commenting who are into the "chess world" know that. This was an original way to finish the match for entertainment only.
in reality this character is based on the chess prodigy jeff sarwer......josh made hell for jeff......in this real game josh drew against jeff...josh won the tournament and jeff had to leave chess due to negative media mess.....................JOSH WAITZKIN IS A LOSER............... see the website...... jeff has a completely different personality than what's shown here
the saddest part about it is, dude made all the moves he was predicted to make, and then had a smirk on his face when he got his queen back, as if it was game over..lol
Actually...lol. Pride comes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall (Prov 16:18).. I always wondered why people omitted the rest of the passage..
This is like the Illest part of the Movie. I watched this scene over and over..lol this one and the one where he's playin his dad from the other room.
This is an all around great family movie. My boys got so excited to learn chess after watching this movie and now they are both great chess players, one of my sons was even beating his teacher at school.
Damn. That kid's a fucking gangster

The real Jeff Sarwer was a really nice kid and actually 2 years younger than Waitzkin. In the book and movie he is portrayed as evil.
harkovadm 1 year ago
@harkovadm I kind of thought the movie portrayed Jeff as more of a victim of unrealistic expecations of his coach/parents.

If Josh's queen didn't have the check, the game is still a draw...so i don't know why jonathan said "look at the board," as if he had the advantage.

@sebastianquilt NO. I think people are considering the 1:46 smile. WTF, is obvious. But that's fine so everybody could understand the end.
