Rafa is always playing with all players who are causing problems to him... oh maybe he wasn't in it!! he had a terrible accident 4 yrs ago,while preparing for rome(the tournament is on clay,just like RG) and he 'slipped' on clay and hit the neck into that little column that's holding the net,and he broke his neck!he could stay invalid or worse...so maybe he doesn't want to get hurt again,so he's avoiding clay as much as he can,i dunno...clay is the toughest surface to play on,if you don't know the technique...
