Look at the 'new' 2010 teams and even now, under similar circumstance like what happened with HRT - and they have a Current model Cosworth!? f the 107% rule was in effect like it was then they wouldnt even make the grid.

And to the guy that says "minardi never built a great chassis" I disagree. Gustav Brunner made a great design for the ~40 million USD budget they had that year. Not everyone can throw a 1/4 of a billion US dollars in development at a car like Ferrari and Mclaren were at the time. It was so good Toyota poached Brunner by years end.

The minardi was truly one of the best cars on the grid with just the worst of engines: a 2-3 years old Ford Cosworth first used by the Stewart Grand Prix F1 Team back in 1999... with 100 horsepower less than the last spec Cosworth engine of the Jaguars
Alonso did a good work with the car but I pretty much remember Tarso Marques ( same stuf like Yoong, Roset, Deletraz and company) not too far behind him on many races... so no big deal there.
Minardi never did decent chassis, regardless of the engines they had
it's not engine power that wins races, the 2002 BMW was the most powerful engine but in a average Williams chassis it was no match for the dominant Ferrari in 2002

for me 2001 was the year that alonso showed more talent, even more than in his wdc years... and suzuka 01 his best race...i remember been amazed with that 19 year old kid that used to outpace his teammate between 1 and 3 sec and that matched benettons and overtook several cars with by far the slowest car on the grid..amazing year, its a pity that there is very few material of alonso in his minardi year in youtube
