I actually thought Rosetta Stone made the original. Never realised it was a cover version. Always loved the Stone-track, but I think this one is even better. And off course, they composed it! Credits for that!
You really have to listen to the vinyl version to appreciate this. Saw this on Top of the Pops in 1970, just before Hallowe'en, and it 's haunted me ever since. I discovered the 45 rpm of this by accident some years ago, and ever since at my Hallowe'en party it's played like an anthem. The funny thing is, on my 45 rpm, the lead singer sounds male. Anybody who appreciates this song is welcome to come to my Hallowe'en party anytime.

@bloodypussyfoad Rosetta Stone's version is more updated with a hard rock riff but it doesn't capture the sense of freshness and urgency the original version has.
i have really love the twang bit in the guitar in the middle , also the single of it still sounds fanastic of 40 years on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE IT!!
Yeah. You got a point. The production values are not great even for the time. It probably sounded better when they played it live and wound up the guitars. But the Rosetta Stone version shows what a great song it really is. And you're wrong about her voice. It would be awesome with the right production - and she would kick the Rosetta Stone's singer's arse.

You gotta be fucking kidding me. First of all this seems to be live so listen to the studio recording. Secondly the violins in the RS version sound like a crappy synthesizer.
