I can't seem to manage the first step the one with holding down the Alt+Shift keys to double the shape of the spiral. When I release the keys the whole spiral just jumps back to its original form. I don't have that double-line shaped spiral. What am I doing wrong? Could please tell me?

I like your tutorial. The only thing I need to tell you is the action you took at 17:30 which was you copied the object without merging it as two pieces. That caused the copied object different than the original. You could get a similar shapes If you merged the original first and copy it and than color it. Thanks.
