The car would be more fuel efficient if it had a 6 or 7 speed transmission installed into it, I tried it in an old BMW which had a 4 speed box and when I fitted a 7 speed one in, it was around 60% more efficient on fuel plus sharper acceleration performance.
Instead more energy is going to be needed making a Hyundai and then exporting it to the USA, not forgetting the energy being used to destroy this Merc and having it reprocessed into a fucking washing machine!

I am an American and have always loved Euro cars. This is saddening literally.
This SEC came from a time when professionals who could afford the payments or buy the car outright, bought these cars as a status symbol and I assumed appreciated them and cared for them properly.
They knew what they were buying and the owner fit the car in that they were a refined, educated business person, doctor or lawyer.
This was the top of the line of the S Class Benzes at the time and I was lucky to work at a MB dealer when these were new.

That is the ones with the Diesel engine which mine is. in the five years I owned it, I have never had to do anything to it other than oil changes. @H00zyodaddy 200 000miles..? hehe our -95 honda civic has done 240 000 kms and the body is now about 20% steel 30% plastic and the rest is rust. at some places you can stick your finger thru the paint and theres no steel under it so tecnically the paint holds the body together.. though merc diesels dont travel less than 500 000 - 1 000 000kms, the taxis over here get about 1millkms and then another 500 000kms as private cars, still with org. engine no prob. haha japanese and am.. your funny man!

I don't *enjoy* watching cars that I like when I was younger getting destroyed. But facts are facts. The owners of these cars wanted a new car. No one else would give them $4500 for the "clunker". And the dealerships aren't stupid, if the car was worth more than that, they'd have done a normal trade-in and resold the car, or taken it to auction. Point being, stop hating on the guys that are just doing their jobs.
@buggsyspam yep I can find some nice ones listed right now for $5-6k. Chances are this car might have sold for $6k but it needed something fixed that would have been minor in most cars, but was $2k plus repair for a Mercedes. The owner decided it wasn't worth the hassle and still find a buyer vs. just getting while the getting was good and trade it in as a clunker.
Sucks, but owning a lot of these old euro cars just amounts to owning the right to expensive repairs.
Why does everyone hate the dealerships? Do you know the statistics on these cars are trucks? The overwhelming majority of them were unsellable. And not unsellable because they didn't run, but because NO ONE WANTED TO BUY THEM. Story after story from the owners about trying to sell a car for $1000, and here the government will give them four times that. It changed nothing except put good body parts on the market now.

@KingofComputing I have the same problem with my vehicles. The program was setup to screw people so they would not be able to find replacement used parts for their older vehicle. Even vehicles that they made 100,000+ a year of that are less than 10 years old are now almost extinct. Its crazy really..

And there is definetly no shortage of parts cars on this earth. You can go to any part puller these days and get almost any used part you need, and if you wish to be safe you could go and get the oem parts instead.
@envoy3 Yes I am high on life. I see you don't go to junkyards often as some makes and models of car's are extinct. High scrap prices makes for the yard to crush the larger vehicles 1st, which are usually the rarer models. If the yard wants to make a dollar, they WILL crush cars. I take parts from vehicles with "problems" all the time. Just because one aspect is broken does not mean the whole vehicle is broken.
@ghtowagon You're kidding right? The C4C cars flooded junkyards, the only thing you couldn't use were the motor. They dropped junkyard prices on a lot of the more common C4C cars by a hefty amount so that they could simply clear the cars out.

Heads were down to 50 a pair at some places, and a general head rebuild is pretty much standard practice in Vortec head swaps.

I can understand the importance of getting rid of actual clunkers, but even those, why destroy them like that? In my country we had a similar program and after it was finished the cars were disassambled and you could go and buy cheap parts in good condition.

But at around 100,000 miles they turn to crap like most American cars. Over here only dumb, poor people buy old beamers or mercedes. Then they break down and sit on their lawn because they cant afford to fix them. 80% of Hondas an Toyotas sold in America over the last twenty years are still on the road.

That is the ones with the Diesel engine which mine is. in the five years I owned it, I have never had to do anything to it other than oil changes. I see plenty of them on the road, Diesels, gas and V8s. So I dont see why your saying there pieces of junk if LOADS of people disagree.

So when they break they're more expensive to fix. People who buy old Mercedes are usually poor and stupid. And the old car winds up on the lawn because they can't afford to fix it. I guess they're not as expensive to work on where you live. What model is most reliable?

@MrCivichatchback never owned a Honda but have nothing against them, i've always like the early one like the 600z. Little car. I've had many fords over the years and all of them were good cars. The only POS I ha was a Dodge Dakota 1987, the last owner abused the shit out of it. So I sent it to the crusher. I also have a 1999 Taurus which is shy under 300,000 and runs good and has never broke down. I also have a 1984 Dodge Aries Kcar which is known for being a Economic car but it still runs good

My aunt sharon had an old 84 accord when i was like 11, we were on the freeway and she asked me if i had ever been 100mph in a car, i said no and so she down shifted lol. I always thought hondas were cool after that. Got my first last september, my civic. People thought it was weird at first because i came from a nice big crown vic. I never ever thought I would dig a small car this way. My roomates got a 93 Dakota forest green with 280,000 miles. were mechanics

Obviously you don't own either BMW or merc. Go to any junk yard and you will see how many are there, why? If you have loads of money and free time to spend in service then yes, get whatever BMW or Mercedes you want but this doesn't mean "good engineering"! Japanese cars and even Americans cars are way better than Germans cars. I saw Japanese cars with over 200k miles and the engine was factory sealed, you don't see this to a German car. What you understand by awesome? To have a expensive maint

@H00zyodaddy 200 000miles..? hehe our -95 honda civic has done 240 000 kms and the body is now about 20% steel 30% plastic and the rest is rust. at some places you can stick your finger thru the paint and theres no steel under it so tecnically the paint holds the body together.. though merc diesels dont travel less than 500 000 - 1 000 000kms, the taxis over here get about 1millkms and then another 500 000kms as private cars, still with org. engine no prob. haha japanese and am.. your funny man!

@MrCivichatchback thanks, but if you can maintain them, you´ll have no problems. my w123 was left by the old owner for some reason unknown. the other one was left cus the towbar failed inspection. and whille you drive, only big issues you got to attend to is rust, no computers or other electrics can fail. i wouldnt buy a car newer than 1995 that isnt german. cus in those new cars cant go 10kms without a service for all equippment. and sorry for calling you fat and lazy not all americans are..

I don't *enjoy* watching cars that I like when I was younger getting destroyed. But facts are facts. The owners of these cars wanted a new car. No one else would give them $4500 for the "clunker". And the dealerships aren't stupid, if the car was worth more than that, they'd have done a normal trade-in and resold the car, or taken it to auction. Point being, stop hating on the guys that are just doing their jobs.

@buggsyspam yep I can find some nice ones listed right now for $5-6k. Chances are this car might have sold for $6k but it needed something fixed that would have been minor in most cars, but was $2k plus repair for a Mercedes. The owner decided it wasn't worth the hassle and still find a buyer vs. just getting while the getting was good and trade it in as a clunker.
Sucks, but owning a lot of these old euro cars just amounts to owning the right to expensive repairs.

Why does everyone hate the dealerships? Do you know the statistics on these cars are trucks? The overwhelming majority of them were unsellable. And not unsellable because they didn't run, but because NO ONE WANTED TO BUY THEM. Story after story from the owners about trying to sell a car for $1000, and here the government will give them four times that. It changed nothing except put good body parts on the market now.

If you're having a hard time finding a 2000 Crown Vic or an Ex, it's not the Cash for Clunkers fault. No 99-2000 Crown Vics were eligible and the Explorer isn't on the approved list, but it's boarder line. Bottom line is that my point still stands: No one else would pay near $4500 for these cars.

@KingofComputing I have the same problem with my vehicles. The program was setup to screw people so they would not be able to find replacement used parts for their older vehicle. Even vehicles that they made 100,000+ a year of that are less than 10 years old are now almost extinct. Its crazy really..

And there is definetly no shortage of parts cars on this earth. You can go to any part puller these days and get almost any used part you need, and if you wish to be safe you could go and get the oem parts instead.

@envoy3 Yes I am high on life. I see you don't go to junkyards often as some makes and models of car's are extinct. High scrap prices makes for the yard to crush the larger vehicles 1st, which are usually the rarer models. If the yard wants to make a dollar, they WILL crush cars. I take parts from vehicles with "problems" all the time. Just because one aspect is broken does not mean the whole vehicle is broken.

@ghtowagon You're kidding right? The C4C cars flooded junkyards, the only thing you couldn't use were the motor. They dropped junkyard prices on a lot of the more common C4C cars by a hefty amount so that they could simply clear the cars out.

@ghtowagon The cars sat in yards, and parts were sold off them for much lower than they normally would have. For instance, prices on Vortec truck heads, used to hop up old school SBCs dropped like a rock because of the flood of C4C cars in yards.

@ghtowagon Dealerships killed the cars, they were then trucked to junkyards to sit. After a year or so, they were crushed, but as is the life of junkyard inventory.
Heads were down to 50 a pair at some places, and a general head rebuild is pretty much standard practice in Vortec head swaps.

You can save your conspiracy theories too. I own and fix "clunkers". The market for used parts has exploded with inventory. From good bumpers and mirrors, to alternators and intakes; I can find more parts, and they are reasonably priced.

@buggsyspam Some cars could of got sold private party for more than $4500 but the owner choose not to because the wanted the easy way out. Some people just are not sales man/ ladies. Yes. Some yards stock and inventory parts but at a higher price than a self service yard. Self service yard's look at a car for pretty much only its scrap value + the attempt of selling some parts off it in a 30-60 day time frame like what happens here. After that, Its crushed and gone forever.
