i dont think the question was asked properally. the dad should have asked his son, has the pink one got more, has the black one got more or are they the same. by asking which one has more, the little boy feels that those r the only opions.
Can the concept of conservation be taught to a child in the preoperational stage? If you explained that they both had the same mass regardless of shape would they be able to then answer the questions correctly?
The reason children in the preoperational stage cannot see the equality the mass, no matter what the shape, is because they cannot focus on two different aspects at one time. "Same amount of play-doh, different shapes" is two different aspects that they are not yet able to understand. There are children that develop quicker than others, piaget's age grouping is just considered the 'average'.
