See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ! Col 2:8. These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men! Matt 15:8-9.
I think that the Good Father speaks of Lent from a Catholic perspective and how we go about practicing our faith through the season of Lent. He is in no way saying that it isn't a Christian thing but rather just how Catholics approach it.
@Mike86672 techically... it is. In two ways. The Catholic Church invented Lent.. but more importantly.. think about what "catholic" means... it means universal. I think all Christians should celebrate it :]
Who pays your wage? Do you dip into the church purse for you 40 hour compensation? A truly spiritual man receives his wage from our Heavenly Father. There is way more to Lenct than you, a secular man, know. May our heavenly Father, God, bless you.
Through infant baptism, keeping sacraments, church membership, going to mass, praying to Mary, and confession (just to mention a few), the Catholic church has developed a system of salvation through WORKS. God's word says that we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not through works". "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." (Eph. 2:8-9)
If Lent represents the 40 days Jesus was in the wilderness without food, why are we supposed to go from Ash Wednesday until Easter (47 days) instead of until Palm Sunday (40 days)?
@ ASOTMHG1 Let's just let God decide who goes to heaven and hell. Shall we? We're mortals, human. We have no right to say who and who isn't going to hell. The word of God is the final choice....
And that's coming from someone who isn't even religious. :P
"If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it."
Actually you will find all the elements of lent in the Gospel. Fasting, turing away from sin, preforming good works /almsgiving ..., so I guess yet again the catholic church takes the gospels more serious then the evanglelicals.
I understand where you are coming from ASOTMHI ,but I think you show your own mistake you were putting your faith in this PLACE In fact Catholic Teaching to my knowledge has always taught to put ones faith in God alone . The rituals and ceremonies of the church are simply human's way of marking progress and connecting in a tangeable way in one's journey towards heaven and God. And the encouragemment and support of the faithful. Which ever way you look at it, it is still a personal journey.
But Jesus was baptised BEFORE he went into the wilderness. Baptism seemed to hurl him into a personal crises which had to be resolved before he could undertake his ministry.
Is this the same Greg Friedman that used to be at Duns Scotus? Duns Scotus was at Evergreen and 8 Mile in northwest Detroit. Had to been in late 1970's.
Pope John Paul II - mysticaly slept in April 2005, just like Lazarus -, present Pope Benedict XVI, and "the Little Pebble" i.e. Pope Little Peter Abraham II.
Padre, I'm glad you stated that Christians (except Baptists and "low" church evangelicals you could have said) also observe Lent including Ash Wed. and Holy Week. Not just the RCC anymore. In fact we Anglicans have long observed it.
Lent should be a Christian thing, not just a Catholic thing. Don't be fooled into judging someone else as inferior in their fast just because of which church they belong to.
@crilewood He never said or even seemed to hint that the Catholic church is superior to the other churches. He was simply stating that lent is something all catholics partake in.
"Lent is a Catholic thing. Now I know Christians all over the world observe Lent, but from Ashes to Easter you can usually tell that a practicing Roman Catholic is doing something different during Lent."
Seems exclusionary to me. Maybe not Roman Catholic > everyone else, but at least Roman Catholic =/= everyone else. Since I'm an Orthodox Christian, I'd take the same exception to the above statement.

Time is getting short, awake all ye brothers and sisters, do not be deceived by the lies of pagan traditionalism:
Rev 18:4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
Jesus is all you need, have faith in him and all can be accomplished.
According to Catholic doctrine, you may still be saved, because your baptism is valid. As long as you have not consciously rejected the Catholic Church in the full knowledge of what it is, then you can be saved even if you are from another denomination. If you were not brought up a Catholic, for example, you may not know much about Catholicism, or have been given a false impression of it, etc. so you cannot be condemned. Please see the quotations above, directly from the Catechism.
"One cannot charge with the sin of the separation those who at present are born in these communities and in them are brought up in the faith of Christ, and the Catholic Church accepts them with respect and affection as borothers... All who have been justified by faith in Baptism are incorporated into Christ; they therefore have a right to be called Christians, and with good reason are accepted as brothers in the Lord by the children of the Catholic Church." - Catechism article 818
"Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience - they too may achieve eternal salvation." - Catechism of the Catholic Church, article 847
Just curious... I am a Baptist. I have only been baptized and have asked Jesus to save me after repenting of sins. According to the Orthodox Roman Catholic Church, would I be currently saved or must I belong to the Catholic Church and perform the 7 sacraments in order to be truly saved?
Please only answer if you truly know Catholic doctrine.

Salvation from sin requires only two things. True repentance from sin, and faith in Jesus Christ as savior.
Faith in anything else for salvation is idolatry. The Roman Catholic cult, which I was once a member, is lost, and is leading many to hell.
I have since renounced all faith in this place, and have since placed my faith in Christ alone. You would be wise to do the same.
Repent, and believe the gospel!

Lent is about giving up things..HUmmm looks like Self Denial to me.
What the Lord Jesus is now doing is for us to GIVE UP:
A.)Carnal Flesh Works(MEANING:deny ourselves of ways that is NOT of HIM.)
B.)Give up :The pull of the World for we do get entangled with things temporary but not of eternal value.
C.)Give up self life & let the Life of Our Lord Jesus takes presedence.
D.)Clean up our Acts in short by Repenting of sins..for it is NOT automatic we need to acknowledge that sin before GOD.
