  • amen. Love how Piper preaches the truth. this video makes no biblical argument against what hes preaching it just ridicules him for taking the bible for what it says in 1 Corinthians

  • 1Co 13:8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

  • what's your point? A sign is clearly something that points to a more significant truth. So? This seems to be beating minutiae to death here. I just don't have the time to invest in this. Sorry.

  • The sign is what I mentioned: the supernatural ability to speak a foreign language they had not previously studied. Unbelievers would recognize this supernatural ability as a sign that this was from God, not man.

  • @JediCaptian - What if the sign is not simply a "wow" miracle, but rather a statement from God to the entire human race (Jew & Gentile) that he is reversing the curse, reversing babylon, and what HE is saying through the tongue (which is always prayer and praise) is that he is accepting the human race in Jesus - every kindred, tribe and TONGUE. I would encourage you to think more about what is meant by "sign to unbelievers." A sign is something that points to another thing. Your thoughts?

  • @JediCaptian - Another way of thinking about this is to remember that it is spirit-inspired AND a sign. (1) The holy spirit gives the human race (i.e. inspires) (2) the capacity to speak to him again. Therefore the "sign" to unbelievers that a person is speaking to God in a language he does not understand by God's ability is another way of saying... "God is letting us back into relationship with him again - in Jesus. Here is a sign. You didn't know how to talk to me. Now you do."

  • @kennyandjo The verse he is referring to in the old testament (Isaiah 28:11) clearly says that this will be speaking to the people, not to God. In 1 Corinthians it is clear from the passage that if it was interpreted right the people would understand, but as they're doing it without one that only God understands and it causes more confusion to people coming into the church. If it was interpreted or heard by a speaker of that language it would come as prophecy and build them up.

  • @kennyandjo Also, its clear from the Bible that not every believer will have this so calling it a reverse of the curse is wrong. I'd also add that God understands our words and thoughts better than we do so a heavenly language is not necessary. For all we know God's "language" transcends mere words. I've had him say something to me as I was praying where the words I heard were english, but carried more weight/depth/meaning.

  • @steveoho Hi there - I do not mean to say that speaking in tongues is a "reverse of the curse." No... It is a "sign to unbelievers" that God is in relationship with humanity again. At Pentecost, when people from every nation hear the early believers praising God in their own languages (followed by a sermon in a common language from Peter) - they respond with "What must we do?" All I am saying is we need to clarify what "sign to unbelievers" means. Humanity can "speak to God" again, In Jesus!

  • @kennyandjo speak - To convey thoughts, opinions, or emotions orally

Are those speaking in tongues doing this? Nope... they don't have a clue what they're "speaking". And 1 Cor. confirms that the only God tongue (false or tongues) actually turns unbelievers away

As I said in another post the "sign" is referring to Isaiah 28:11. Where God is speaking to the people - i.e. prophecy. Its a sign because they speak it in a language the speaker does not know, but the hearer does.

  • Ego Maniacs in suit and ties pretending to be the voice of the "almighty". What an ego trip.

  • The gifts of the holy spirit must be define to the church. That's why they are a gift. Muttering gibberish doesn't do anybody any good, but in acts they are actually speaking to people in their native tongues. The gifts are still present, but most people try to use them for their own selfish purpose, therefore they dont actually have the holy spirit.

  • @GazawayJD - The text in Acts 2 indicates that the people were praising God, and they could be heard doing this by people who were listening. He who speaks in a tongue does not speak to MEN, but TO GOD. They were not preaching in tongues. Peter preaches AFTER their Spirit-borne praise. I think it is a mistake to see what happens in Acts 2 as people speaking in tongues to other people, since Paul later says in 1 Cor. 14 that we do not speak to men, but to God. They are not speaking to people.

  • @kennyandjo How can you say they are not speaking to people? Those who heard them understood the disciples speaking in their native tongues. The Holy Spirit was evident to the people BECAUSE the Holy spirit was working. The Holy spirit worked in them to reach others. Personally, I don't feel the need to speak in tongues, and therefore don't.

  • @GazawayJD - The text does not say that they were speaking to people. It only says "We hear them speaking." When you look at WHAT they were speaking, it was "the mighty works of God." That is praise to God, and it fits perfectly with what Paul says in 1 Cor. 14 that tongues are NOT (never ever) spoken to people. People can say "Amen" to a prayer if they understand it. Tongues are spoken only ever and solely to God in the New Testament. They spoke to God. Peter preached to them after that.

  • In all of this, I Cor. 14:22 gets overlooked, "Tongues, then are a sign, NOT FOR BELIEVERS, but for unbelievers..." In Acts 2, tongues was a supernatural ability to speak a foreign language, not gibberish. Rather than argue about the miraculous, why not just prove it? Will someone with the gift of healing go to a hospital and heal every person there? Jesus healed entire REGIONS. With TV cameras rolling, go to a graveyard and raise someone from the dead. The proof is in the pudding.

  • @JediCaptian - What do you think the "Sign" to unbelievers is? In 1 Cor. 14, Paul gives a lot of instructions to believers who are speaking in tongues in their corporate gatherings. This seems to indicate that it is something they would/should expect to happen, and they needed some guidelines. SO we need to understand how this is a sign to unbelievers. Any ideas?

  • The holy spirit is a joke. He was supposed to guide the church. He was supposed to inspire bible writers, readers, interpreters and translators. He inspired them all in a different way. Hence 35,000 christian denominations. That quite A job of guidance !! LOL You are better off without his guidance.

  • Wadsworth Constant applies

  • Big respect to John Piper... a reformed theologian who believes in the power of the Holy Spirit for the present age. God bless him!

  • He is a true theological teacher of our day. He only says what the scriptures says and does not insert personal biases. He truly has the Spirit of Christ speaking through him because he allows for the Holy Spirit to do as it wishes. God bless you and continue to soften the hearts of so many "teachers" of our faith that falsely teach that the gifts of the spirit are dead.

  • Yes, but tongues the true gift is different from the "tongues" seen in most churches these days... not to say that tongues doesn't exist, but you won't be able to distinguish it from the chaotic gibberish uttered by most these days.

  • @steveoho true...some make it up-...I received tongues- didn't ask for it..didn't know what it was at first...YEARS later after an illness I was trying to tell a friend how God healed me- it was amazing and I couldn't say enough...& the tongues came back...(I had almost died-saw an angel-and decided i wanted to come back to raise my daughter- but is there something I can do that proves I experienced this-that I didn't "dream" it...the tongues are there..ANY time. No shouting..quietly praying.

  • @lookingup82 Tongues, in scripture, is identified as real translatable language which could be spoken to a person of another culture or that would benefit the church. It is not identified as something for self-edification (though you don't even know what you're saying) or use apart from it being understood by someone. Tongues, as its commonly practiced today, is indistinguishable from the gibberish used in pagan religions. Has your tongues benefited you? What fruit accompanies it?

  • @steveoho I know/ witnessed a DEAF woman speaking perfect Hungarian! She can't make herself understandable in ENGLISH. My tongues is for my use(I have whispered tongues as prayers. I don't go yelling it in a tongue. The fruit from the prayers is my proof. I was raised Catholic and often I can't get the words out to a prayer that isn't memorized. thus, I quietly use tongues. I'm guessing you don't like it or have had a bad experience with it-or don't like using it yourself.?

  • @lookingup82 You mention a possible legitimate expression of tongues. The idea of tongues being a language in which we only speak to God is something I don't see in the Bible. Also, not every Christian will have that gift. I believe the true gift is no longer given (with the possible exception of the unprovable distant country that hasn't heard the gospel accounts). The Charismatic church has made themselves fools by their flagrant use of the false tongue with no intention of interpreting it

  • @steveoho do you really NOT see "He who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God" in the BIble. I think it's right there in 1 Cor. 14:2. Seems plain as feathers on a bird to me. Tongues is inspired speech TO GOD - not people. People HEAR the speech, and in order for them to say "AMEN" to it, they need to know what it means. But it is ALWAYS and ONLY EVER praise or prayer TO GOD - and NOT men. What did the people in Act 2 "hear them speaking?" Look closely. It is PRAISE to God.

  • @lookingup82 I too was raise Catholic and have been excited to find that set prayers are not how we talk to God... that is more like the pagans who think they can bend God's arm by doing xyz. God invites us to talk to Him openly. We pray with words we can understand so that we understand his response (through his word and our lives) and our faith and relationship with him is built. With tongues as a prayer language not even you are edified. Romans 8:26 does not refer to tongues btw.

  • @steveoho It is like an energizing battery. I might get 4 hrs of sleep and tongues for 15 minutes...I feel relieved and rested. At times, I have felt something- no idea what is coming-but "bad" news coming-that hasn't reached me yet. I pray in the spirit-maybe wake at night & pray-w/voice and tongues. When people are looking for a miracle and they run into someone randomly who will pray in tongues quietly over them. It's often THE sign they were praying for! (That's happened to me several times)

  • Respond to this video... It's not to used as a show off. It's not a circus act. My daughter has had deep troubles..for a teenager...And she's asked me to pray over her. I pray w/words and when she's nearly asleep I pray in tongues. Now, I think there's a "healing" somehow associated with it when I fast. God comes through when I have my flesh in check. HARD to explain.

  • Respond to this video... I don't believe you can teach someone how to receive the Holy Spirit..it's a gift He gives... All I do is tell a person let yourself fall in love with Jesus...Deeply in love...nothing else on your mind. Tell Him you love Him and mean it.

  • @lookingup82 If you've accepted Christ as your savior then you have the Holy Spirit. Having a gift is something God chooses to bestow that you may edify the church. I'm sure you can find a message of Pipers that disagrees with the false, ecstatic tongue or tongue without meaning to anybody hearing it. And by all means love God... just as long as you're not doing it for his gifts.

  • @steveoho - WHere does it say anywhere in the Bible that tongues is spoken to people? I understand the people HEAR the language (as in Acts 2), but Paul specifically says that "He who speaks in a tongue does NOT speak to men, BUT TO GOD!" How does this square with your statement that tongues is a "language spoken to a person of another culture"? In Acts 2, they were praising God in ear-shot of other people who defined it as "hearing them speak God's mighty works" (praise) THEN Peter preaches.

  • @kennyandjo I'm not a greek expert, but after reading Macarthur's study there is a distinction of tongues in the passage (known vs unknown). The unknown tongue is the one spoken to God who by necessity would be the only one who'd understand. There is little to diff. between modern tongues and pagan glossolalia. I'd also question how you'd spot a fake. All charismatics I know look at the speaker as a super authoritative Christian. Check out "Is speaking in tongues demonic"

  • @steveoho Check out "Is speaking in tongues demonic" It`s not demonic, it`s plain INFANTILISM.

  • @ndzoko There may be some truth to that, but I'm fairly certain demons are involved in many instances of tongues and supposed prophecy and who knows what other spiritual thing.

  • @steveoho There are no demons. If you meet one, send him/her(I prefer a female) to me I have a question. I would like to askhim.her, where this place " hell" is for touristic purposes.

  • @ndzoko Demons, or any angel for that matter, are neither male nor female. Whenever they've appeared to people on earth, in the Bible, they've always seemed to be men. I've rarely heard of someone seeing a demon and I don't trust the source most times they do. They do speak to all people though and influence them. You don't notice them because like the man with split brain he thinks the involuntary movements, and in this case also thoughts, are his own idea and will justify them.

  • @steveoho They must be hermaphrodites, misfits. If we don`t notice them, we have nothing to fear.

  • @ndzoko Not hermaphrodites... they don't have a sexual distinction. Besides that they don't have bodies... they are spirits. Ignorance is not bliss in all cases. I'm saying you do hear demons, but you attribute their words to your own thoughts. Its very dangerous to believe lies.

  • @steveoho Pick up a science book for a change. Will ya ?

  • @ndzoko Presumptive of you to say so :) Try checking out the book "The Case for a Creator"

  • @steveoho I read it, man, Nothing convincing in there.

  • Take that, John MacArthur.

  • @Celestiaetterra Yeah, this is the same guy that invites heretics like rick warren to speak, I know which one (MacArthur or Piper) I'd listen to.

  • @Kinosis79 If Piper is indeed in error and you are not, then your own personal sanctification and godliness ought to surpass his since you are more orthodox than he is.

  • @Celestiaetterra lol...

  • Piper has no idea of what the gift of tongues was about.

  • @kennyandjo I'd be careful about your combative tone here; you are not at war with other Christians. If God desires, they'll get theirs, as will we. Personally, I'm not skeptical of the Holy Spirit's power, I'm just skeptical of many people who claim to be a vessel for it. I know several who speak in tongues, heal, etc. by the Spirit's power, but I also know others who have broken my trust, frankly b/c they treat others poorly then just wannna heal! More concerned with body than heart

  • I like him more now.

    Thanks , Lord.

  • is he talking about true biblical tongues(language) or modern pentecostal deception of the jibberish thing? gift of healing? who today has the power or "gift" to heal someone? can HE perform a miracle.???

  • @lunabranwen in the biblical tongues, according to paul, nobody can understand a tongue unless God reveals to them the interpetation. At pentecost there were Many many nationalities and 12 apostles. They were all speaking in the same tongue, and the interpetation was revealed to each in their native language. If there is noone to give an interpetation when someone is speaking in tongues, paul says that the person is speaking to God. THAT is the nature of tongues.

  • ok so he believes in the gift of tongues...good.

  • Now, if he'd just start believing Heb.11:6 and quit speaking against the men who do, he could become a good preacher.

"There's no theology ... that says God can't won't shouldn't..." is a dishonest cop-out. Piper speaks against those who believe God's Word which says "covet earnestly" and that is ONE word in the Greek, not two.

Piper's just trying to avoid the criticism that he heaps on others who actually DO BELIEVE what he's pretending to believe.

  • i love it!! :)

  • I believe that the Works & the Gifts of the Holy Spirit is available today. But the most abused gift of all is the Gift of Speaking in Different Tongues. We forget that Paul who wrote 1 Cor. 12 also wrote 1 Cor 14, where we can see the foundational guidance for gift of Tongues, only 2-3, one at a time (not like we see today in some churches), and there must be INTERPRETATION. If none, the one speaking in different tongue should stop.

  • @33skcunac These regs were only for speaking in an unknown tongue-not the real gift of tongues. No such regulations were given for the real deal.

  • @33skcunac Spoken EXACTLY like one who has been baptized in unbelief and doesn't speak in tongues. I heard a preacher decades ago say, "Never ask an elephant about a zebra's stripes." When you or Piper start flowing in the gifts of the Spirit, your testimonies will change. Right now, you're just pretending. There's TOO MUCH evidence that's IT'S REAL so you want to play "Christian political correctness" and say, "Yeah, I believe that too" when you're still clueless and filled with unbelief.

  • Then after the altar we continued worship--and my dear friend also prayed over me in tongues. My car was recently totalled and I was quite content with their valuation of my car---but after that service I received a phone call that they would be sending an additional check for over $900 due to delayed cost valuation from tsunami in Japan. Faith is Gods permission to work the supernatural in our lives---I have many more testimonies that speak of His Truth.

  • I can tell you that spiritual things are unleashed in the power of tongues! It is very alive and real! The most recent for me was our church service about God wanting to bless us-if we ask in obedient faith. The altar call came, I didn't step forth to the altar ---interpretive tongues came forth and God was calling me out for not stepping forward. I stepped forward and was prayed over for a special blessing.

  • I do love the ministry of John Piper, I am however not one prone to believe in the active work of Tounges today.

I don't "put God in a box" afterall He is God and can do anyhting He pleases, I just cannot see to purpose of tounges. Everytime I see it, it is out of order and a part of a chaotic service, Just my experiencem I'll still read and listen to Piper.

    But I am a cesationist

  • @opctom1 I first received tongues when I was 14. Had NO idea about it! It actually scared and embarrassed me! I covered my mouth& that was it. Later in 2006,I was extremely ill. As I got better and tried talking to one woman about about my healing was a true miracle-God is so good- I stumbled over my words-- and then again..sentences can flooding out. I was back w/the tongues.Mostly, I pray in private(or over my daughter). Non-believers--feel something move in them...

  • Praise God for preachers like Piper who are not willing to put God in a box and say the HOly Spirit has ceased from operating!!!

  • John Piper is coming to Australia; looking forward to hearing him preach. Could you tell me what song is in the background please?

  • These gifts were never available to anyone. That is the reason no one uses them today. They don't exist, and never have, they're just made up fairy tales.

  • Believe it or not, I've seen the opposite, a woman in my church after the pastors prayed around her was cleared from cancer 1 week later at Mayo Clinic in Rochestor, MN. I have seen strangers, friends and acquaintances with various issues in their bodies (throbbing hip pain, knee, lower-back, shoulders, and sprained ankles healed immediately after they received prayer.. God is real bro, and He wants to Himself to you in a real and tangible way, the best place to start is ask Him..

  • Kennyandjo - Let's make sure we correct in love.

We all need a dose of 1 john...regularly.

  • wow, I did not know that...does he say anything else after that about it?

  • I am a reformed charismatic! (In the words of Matt Chandler)

  • He doesn't believe in them in the same way the modern Charismatic Church does IE that tongues are just utterances or special prayer languages or that prophecy is new revelation from God, He views Prophecy as speaking the Word of God and tongues as the gift of real languages.

  • @BennyMetal7 Actually, that's not correct. He does believe in tongues as the Charismatics practice, but he thinks it should be done in accordance with Scripture and that not everyone gets this gift. He is a continualist in his belief in the gifts of the Spirit.

  • @bobbyandfred No he does not, if your going to make that claim please provide documentation, I've heard him speak on it many times and he has said he has never heard anyone ever use the true gift.

  • God Bless John Piper...may he be filled even more the Holy Spirit!

  • Do you know what sermon this was taken from?

  • It was taken from a sermon in Hebrews 10 where John is challenging his congregation to BE TOGETHER in the last-days, and to welcome all that the Holy Spirit wants to do among them "even more as you see the day approaching."

  • @kennyandjo

Hi do you have the complete sermon? Appreciate if you can direct me to one.

  • I love it, dude!

  • Thanks stoney490. Piper Rocks!
