Ah yes. Life as an extra. I'm doing that now. A new series in Australia called "Rescue". The artificial mud smells OK, but it fucks the skin up. Working on "Australian" for Baz Lurhman nearly killed me, yet it was fun. We got soaking wet 6 times, got dried 6 times, and wet again 6 times. Its great work when you can get it. I bet the pay rates are much better in the US having Actors Equity. We don't have that in Australia, we go on minimal wages. We are crazy enough to do that. Awesome stuff. 9*
In America the main union for movies tv and commercials is SAG, not AEA. AEA takes over for mostly theater. Sometimes AFTRA comes in when it isn't SAG's jurisdiction, like in the cases of digital media. There are many exceptions, but only those actors or background playing or not qualify to be union. But like in Aus, there are non union players too, bless their souls. Here just like there, they are also paid a minimum salary with limited adjustments for wet, smoke, etc.
A reminder of good times ...thanks. I was also there. :)
