The system could works if a Computerized Centralized Landing Sequencing System or similar were attach to the plane. Actually it was CH53 Sea Stallions that were used. Chithooks don't have the legs for the mission, but neither did the Stallions, hence the Desert One refueling stop, which a sand storm caused chaos and the accidents. I watched those boys plan and train for the mission for months before. Today they would have a better chance of success with the joint operations command, which only came from that mission.

the accident was one RH-53 pilot mistakenly following the light of a C-130 crewman thinking it was a ground controller and hitting the tail of one C-130 causing an explosion and destroying at least two RH-53s and the C-130.
Very complicated tho... Flying and landing that kind of machine with modification is not easy task. Looked like before the crash the pilots did not start up the vertical rocket booster, which is responsible for softer down landing.

They staged in the desert with a couple of MC-130s providing refueling support, but the prop and rotor wash stirred up a sandstorm, so one of the RH-53s could not see where it was going and crashed into the MC-130. After that the mission was aborted because on the way to the staging point a couple of helicopters had malfunctioned. Thus, when the accident occurred, there were not enough aircraft remaining to complete the mission.

C-130 is not big, empty weight (no fuel or payload) is 75,800 lbs. C-130 has BIG fat main gear tires MADE to spread load out on "unimproved" runways (meaning dirt, gravel). Hard packed dry dirt has large load bearing capability.
747 has FOUR main gears bogie's (4 huge tires each), empty 406,000 lbs, gross weight up to 975,000 LBS! Runways have load ratings so they're not damaged from 100,000's of landings. This mission required one landing and the dirt was HARD PACKED & DRY. Trust me!
But they did go ahead with the mission - which failed due to a storm (some say Russian rockets, who knows) ... If the rockets on the planes were abandoned, how the hell were they going to land in the stadium? helicopters I guess.

Chithooks don't have the legs for the mission, but neither did the Stallions, hence the Desert One refueling stop, which a sand storm caused chaos and the accidents. I watched those boys plan and train for the mission for months before. Today they would have a better chance of success with the joint operations command, which only came from that mission.

the accident was one RH-53 pilot mistakenly following the light of a C-130 crewman thinking it was a ground controller and hitting the tail of one C-130 causing an explosion and destroying at least two RH-53s and the C-130.

Very complicated tho... Flying and landing that kind of machine with modification is not easy task. Looked like before the crash the pilots did not start up the vertical rocket booster, which is responsible for softer down landing.

They staged in the desert with a couple of MC-130s providing refueling support, but the prop and rotor wash stirred up a sandstorm, so one of the RH-53s could not see where it was going and crashed into the MC-130. After that the mission was aborted because on the way to the staging point a couple of helicopters had malfunctioned. Thus, when the accident occurred, there were not enough aircraft remaining to complete the mission.

C-130 is not big, empty weight (no fuel or payload) is 75,800 lbs. C-130 has BIG fat main gear tires MADE to spread load out on "unimproved" runways (meaning dirt, gravel). Hard packed dry dirt has large load bearing capability.

But they did go ahead with the mission - which failed due to a storm (some say Russian rockets, who knows) ... If the rockets on the planes were abandoned, how the hell were they going to land in the stadium? helicopters I guess.

No need for the mission. Iranians were talking about execution, thus the reason for urgency. Operation Eagle Claw was an aborted mission on April 1980, and a sandstorm caused aircraft staged in the desert accidentally collided. Credible Sport, the YMC-130H was after this, and this accident was on Oct 30, 1980, but Regan was elected Nov; moslum were afraid he'd bomb them back to the 7th century. Can you tell me why you can't type out does instead of "dos"? Also the word "dos" (does) should be (do). Also why did you type 4 instead of four? Is it that hard to do?

@narutonutd Well, technically they are a type of "jet" engines.. Turboprops to be exact.. But either way the discovery channel did a bad job with the sound effects.. I even think they combined the sound of a piston engine and a turbojet.. The turbojets on these sound like a Giant flying beetle on caffeine with a bit of "jet engine noise behind..
