First, amperage is not voltage. The statement "reducing amperage to 24 volts" is wrong. Second, keep in mind that large appliances like washing machines are plugged into 220 volt systems in the U.S., so be careful at home. Imagine what it could do to a human if it knocks down an elephant.

The normal household is around 120V. Some plugs in the garage or laundry room are 240V for larger appliances. I can't say if it's for every single house in the U.S. but it's been the case for all the houses I've lived in. A 120V will easily kill you. The 240V shock you got was probably only a portion of it. You weren't the only path for the current and most of it was still going the route that was intended.

First of all: you're deaf. The zoo isn't in China but Chili. Two: the elephant was pushed in that pit by her own mate. Three: the wire was nescesary to keep the bull away when the keepers had to rescue the other one. Four: although it was a stupid idiot who plugged in the electric wire, it was an accident. It should have produced only 24 volts and a lower amperage, not enough by far to hurt the animal. They did their best to rescue her, made a mistake, but luckily she's fine now!
