I have had the audio of this for 30 years and completely unwatchable VHS copies for 25. I never imagined I'd see it like this. For me this is the YouTube find of the year. THANK YOU!
Fascinating curiosity, never had a clue this existed. Got to say I'm not all that keen, though I love all 3 artists dearly and this song in particular.
Thank you for uploading this at such an early age as they both began to experiment and change our musical landscape individually in this early hint of what was to come.
There is a big B/W pic of Kate like this from Lion Heart album art work in the Retro Bar in London. It is so stunning and she is her own icon. Wonderful talented person.
all the Gaga's & Beyonces look-a-likes need to seriously rewind back to this time and learn what is a beautiful, eternal, powerful woman voice & presence - no need to undress at all to earn fame, its called TALENT
I never knew this existed. What can I say, Roy Harper's lyrics are so powerful. But performed by Kate and Peter this performance is superb, they are fantastic together.
Such a beautiful song. Roy Harper really gets around; Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd (Wish You were Here), and this - hats off to Roy Harper (and Gabriel and Bush - two of my all-time favourites)
@hippiekind8 You're right, I think. Actually when she appeared in 1978/79 and we still had Vinyl records, there were people who thought they were playing it with the wrong speed. Don't get me wrong: I do like what she did then.
Sorry guys but "Don't Give Up" is ohhhh so much better than this song. Sorry Peter and Katie, but this song doesn't really go anywhere. Too all over the place. but I love Kate's high notes and her 'little girl voice'- that's what makes her who she is - she stands alone...brilliant!
Can understand you find her voice strange, as it is certainly unique, though having fallen in love with it 30 years ago I can't say i agree, but I do agree with the comment about taking the time t o listen to her 2005 album AERIAL - especially the second CD sky o fhoney. It is uttelry sublime. Like hearing light. The woman is just supremely gifted. thanks for posting this video...
I am probs in a lotta peoples eyes an old fool of 55 but havei loved and i have lost and loved again.....this is probs the best love song i have ever heard.....bar none
For those who don't know: Kate sang on Roy Harper's "You" from The Unknown Soldier and Roy sang backing vocals on Kate's "Breathing" from Never For Ever. The version of this song with vocals by Liz Frazer appeared on the album It'll End In Tears by This Mortal Coil.
Kate's Voice WAS HER MAGIC. Her Theatricality set the foundations to many subsequent artist to follow in her footstep and develope as Recording Technology improved. When you think up to early 70s Artists could produce such great works by using old technology they had to have talent, for in those days THERE WERE NO VOCAL ENHANCERS (Just simple Reverb/Echo), no Gates Limiters, Expanders, nothing, of what in the past 10 years many Artists have been enjoying whilst having half of Kate's Talent.
This song is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful. Kate and Peter give Roy Harper's lyrics so much depth and the vocal choir in the background is so epic, it almost has a beautifully melancholic sadness like Pink Floyd. You can just feel the emotion of two people crying out inside because they love each other but both are too damaged inside to vocalize it and save themselves. Just incredible...
Such a nice song. Just want to point a reminder to Roy Harper's original rendition. The reproduction is much better too: It's in the video links on the right anyway.
My point is, I have followed both for years, but the genius is Roy Harper. If you don't know his work you have missed out on our greatest poet/song writer. He wrote this and sings it like a man in love and lust.
This special is the best christmas television I have seen in a long long time. Absolutely amazing. Thanks to the youtube people who have posted it. BBC has gone to the dogs these days. LITERALLY.
I never knew they did this. The original is Roy Harper (1970). It is very down home, John Denver like. It was done again in the mid 80's by This Mortal Coil with a very siren feel to it. All are very different in sound, but all very good
...Peter and Kate created a theatrical feeling. On the other hand 'This mortal coil''s edition gives the 'supernatural' ambient... Lovely song with many faces...
Two of the greatest musical genius of all time. wonderful. I was lucky enough to see Peter Gabriel perform last year, I would give anything to see Kate play live, but its just never going to happen : ( -Why will she not play, she knows there are so many people desperate to see her. Thanks for postingthis rare clip xx
