So while this idea of the elite betraying the people or somehow lacking respect for their people is intriguing, I suspect it had a lot more to do with power politics.

The Australian Government should have talked to these people. The Australian Government should advise the local people how to handle this. If I saw an Indian student being attacked, I would certainly do something about it. To be quite honest, I found far more racism in the UK against Indians. Indian students contributes $10bn as university fee every year + they simulate low populated Australian economy by living (rough expenses of an Indian student - $1000/yr for mobile phones, $8000/yr for rent, $5000 for food and entertainment) MULTIPLY by 80,000 indian students/year..... big numbers... govt should wake up....
