The Fishman beats the Unico in price (990€ Unico 725€ Loudbox). The Unico is nice. I tried it, it's great for voices and magnetic pickups. For dynamic playing it lacked a bit of headroom.
If I played in a guitar duo I would choose the Unico (singer/guitar or guitar/guitar) with a nice clear sound.
I missedd a notch, and phase to fight feedback on all channels. The spring reverb sounded crappy to me, but I think the new versions have a digital reverb.
The Fishman is made for piezo pick ups and Unico for kondensator pick ups.
the Unico has got 185w, 4 channels all with notchfilter in the new version, and the spring reverb is technically the same as in the Fender twin reverb that made world history and still does. ok analog or digital is a question of taste. I like the dynamic warm sound of spring reverb. it just sounds more realistic.
We should never forget that reverb was just a cure for the sound of old amps that lacked room presence. So ok, some systems made history and we are now used to this sound so we think "this is the way it should sound". But all systems are artificial cures for a natural problem.
As you stated a question of taste... the reverb of the loudbox is simple, useable and nice, for stage performance, but will not outplay studio reverbs or even some plugins (maybe i'll try the Fishman AFX reverb some day).
You are right that the Unico is made for natural sound and the Fishman for character. Thats the hole difference between the two firms.
Fishman builds the world best pick ups in piezo and for giving your guitar a character.
Schertler is the world best pick up if you want your guitar to sound like the wood and strings it is. it does not build a character that is not there acoustic. it simply amplifies the sound of the guitar undisturbt like it sounds acousticly.
Fishman has good piezo pickups, and now with the ellipse system, there is a small Microphone blended to the sound. So you have a nice structure and groove to the sound with the piezo and you add airiness and natural sounding harmonics.
I still have to try some Schertler build in microphones, so I can't say much about them.
Hope some day I met someone with a good guitar and a Schertler mike i'll give it a try.
Thats the main difference. if you like to play rock, the piezo is great, but if you play more intimate like jazz, picking, folk and so, the Schertler is clearly the answer.
I play picking, sometimes very rock influenced. As stated above there is more than piezo in the Fishman.
I fully agree with the idea that, let's say for a Jazzy duet on a Ceddar top guitar you'll be happy with it.
I think that when you give enough money to cross the line to professionnal gear, there is no good and bad amp. There is "the" amp that suits your taste and needs.
I looked at following systems: AC60 (too warm, ), Unico (bad reverb, expensive, no notch), Yamaha Stagepass (not suited).
JUST PLAY YOUR FUCKING GUITAR !!!

Thats sad.
I`ve got the Schertler SP guitar with the build in dual system.
You could have tried it if we didn`t live this far from each other :-)
