@andlee71694 I completely agree. Thy should focus on Fink in the trailer and let the viewer discover the Goodman angle by themselves. I hate it when trailers do this.
This movie is a work of art. And this is an excellent trailer. Luckily I never saw until after I saw the movie. Because this damn trailer gives away the ENTIRE damn movie. When I first watched the movie, the whole Mad Mad Mundt thing was a total shock surprise. I'd have hated to see this trailer beforehand.
everytime I watch this film I end up feeling depressed and ... strange afterwards. I can't really explain it. I definitely think this is the most powerful film by the Coens. It took me a few viewings to say that. I've tried to figure out what all of it is about too... I assume there's no other choice but to have my own perspective on it.. The box that is given to Barton Fink near the end of the film is what catches my attention the most. Also check out Fargo, Blood Simple, Raising Arizona.
It is dark, it has a strong undercurrent and it is inherently Coen. Taking bits and pieces from great masters like Hitchcock, Kubrick, Polanski, Lynch - they have created their own comic masterpiece. An experience so strange and eerie that it will drive you mad !
Watch some of our shorts on youtube channel ||| mypixelstory |||
SPOILER ALERT! My theory is this: Mad Man Munt, or "Charlie" helped Barton by killing W.P. Mayhew, who actually killed Audrey, and tried to frame Barton. The head in the box is ol' Winnie the Pooh Mayhew himself. And if I'm wrong, it's okay, because I do enjoy making stuff up.
The Coen brothers are like The Beatles of movies - so inspired. To learn how to connect to the source of inspiration, search "Truth Contest" in Google and click the 1st result, then open The Present and read what it says.
@appletinihamshire It is about the honest writers which have ideals for witting, but cant make it anywhere, because deep, serious and artistic scenarios dont attract public (and money) and also, even when you make some good play-script-novel, your best is to TRY to reach experiance of the "common man", but you could never do it, because writing itself makes your life easier at least a little bit (of course, for the speciffic group of writters which is Torturo representing on film)..
@appletinihamshire When given a "task" to write, such writters feel like they are in hell (Hotel which Torturro is staying), and they are trying to listen a "common man" (Goodman), but they never can reach their pain and suffering (cant feet in their shoes - scene from film, also, near the end Goodman says: "You think you know about pain? You are just a tourist here, and I am LIVING here."). So, in a way, common man lives every day in hell that writter has only when he is pushed by some "boss".
I'm a writer and this movie speaks right from my mind. I also love the other Coen brother movies. They are a rare Hollywood diamond compared to the other unbelievable shit Hollywood dares to bring to light.
Am I sick because I feel sympathy for a murderer? John Goodman is just so hilarious in this movie, you can't help but like him in a way. The Coens do that, I guess. I even felt some sympathy for Anton Chigurh/Javier Bardem in No country for old men.
The buzz generated by the premiere of Fargo got this movie aired on tellie back in Sweden. I was 21 at the time so at least Steven Seagal had ceased to be my biggest hero. It instantly became my favorite next to Lynch's Wild at heart. Upon seeing Fargo I was, I'm afraid to say, dissapointed. It just didn't have that mind blowing quality. Screw my username. My name is Chet.
On watching this a second time, i have just realised how much if a masterpiece this movie is. There is so much more than meets the eyes at first, its hidden with complex symbolism and hidden meanings that i didnt pick up on, on the first viewing.
Have anybody ever seen Wizards of Waverly Place or who David Henrie is? If not, there's an episode of Wizards of Waverly Place where David's character is wearing glasses like Harry Potter; he almost, ALMOST, looks a bit like Barton Fink (John Turturro).
So, I watched this movie, and I really liked it, but, on imdb and other sites, they mention so many difficult and unrealistic theories about this film... I thought and I know that his film is just about the mind of a writer who has a writer's block, just the beginning and the ending of the movie is real, and the box is just his 'writer-mind', the box got he in his 'imaginations', so he carries that all the time and so he has THE film about 'wrestlers' ... could this be THE theory ? =D
im sooooo glad I didn't see this trailer! it totally gives away the thing about goodmen's character. It made it so much better that I didn't know he was a murderer.
I prefer The big Lebowsky, but is still good. But did you understand what happend with that box? Is like the carpet from Dude (Big Lebowsky)? I think it was a head from the doctor, but IDK... Does it have any sense? haha maybe is crazy like no contry for old men...
Actually, the Coen Brothers wrote this movie while they had writers block, which is why it is essentially a movie about writers block. They always have some major underlying philosophical message in there movies, but I don't think it was so prominent in this one.

is this movie any good i seen no country for old men love it and the big lebowski loved it and raising arizona loved it and fargo it was ok and burn after reading it was ok and lady killers sucked and millers crossing sucked there r weird guys so any good compare 2 these movies?
Everyone's got a different opinion matthewinnj... So it's impossible to say if you'll like it or not. Yes it's good, very good. But then, I think the same thing about Miller's Crossing whereas you think that one sucked. It would be a pretty boring world if everyone liked the same thing as everyone else. Just give this movie a try, it's only about 2 hours long, so not a life changing waste of time if it doesn't pan out!
@matthewinnj08 the second half of this movie is very much in a David Lynch vein, if you don't like Lynch you'll hate it, but if you're a Lynch fan you'll love it. But if you thought Miller's Crossing sucked, you'll probably hate this one too. :-)
cool movie i love john goodman and turturro but one question Is "Charlie" Satan? or a Demon or something like that cause i doubt he's a door to door insurance salesman!
I thought so too but I strongly believes he represents the common man of America that Barton keeps talking about getting tired and fed up on how they are treated by the higher class. I think the last shot of Charlie going back to his burning room represents their tolerance to be living So heinously.
oh, and by the way vene777 the image with the girl from the beach was the exact wallpaper he had in his hotel room. So, you should put those rare synapses of yours make some connections. ;)
this movie is related to a movie of roman polanski "The Coen brothers cite as a major influence for Barton Fink the Roman Polanski film Le locataire (1976). (Watching The Tenant, according to one writer, will give you a lot better idea of what's in the mysterious kraft-paper-wrapped box in Barton Fink.)" Anyway, I would be very very grateful if someone can tell what's the soundtrack of this movie? pleaseeee??? thank you very much
@deephardandfast It's on the Fargo/Barton Fink soundtrack. TVT 8010-2. You can buy it on Amazon. It's also available as an MP3 download off Amazon. Excellent soundtrack, IMO.
the girl on the beach is portrayed in the same pose as the picture in Barton's room. This is ironic considering the image Hollywood sells is one of beautiful people and sun-kissed beaches but Barton gets sent to some crummy hotel. He looks at the picture with longing, as if it is a kind of wish-fulfilment, but when he finally sees it for real, his whole life has collapsed around him.
@lunchmeat400 I haven't seen this movie, but Bruce Campbell mentioned in is book that he almost had a part in it. The book is a good read about someone struggling in the entrainment business .
Seriously, I love the Coens, and I enjoyed the characters and quirkiness of this movie, but when it ended I was left feeling confused and a little unsatisfied. I honestly don't get it, and I want to.
I just finish watching this movie and...WOW! This movie belongs with the other greatest films of all time like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Network. It almost feels like a Edgar Allan Poe story being transfered into 1941 Hollywood. I think its better than Citizen Kane and There Will Be Blood combined!

Having said that, I think these films are SUPER precisely for their strange, weird, creepy and nightmarish styles. Why does one have to "understand" them intellectually? here is my Coen brothers movie ranks 1. Miller's Crossing 2. Barton Fink 3. The Big Lebowski 4. Blood Simple 5. Fargo 6. Burn After Reading 7. Raising Arizona 8. No Country for Old Men 9. O Brother Where are Thou? 10. Intolerable Cruelty 11. The Hudsucker Proxy 12. The Ladykillers
They wrote it in the middle of writing Millers Crossing when they had writers block. They sort of reference Barton Fink in Millers Crossing with the "Barton Arms" apartment building.
At the top list of my favorite films, the Coen Brothers have instilled hope in an industry loaded with sellouts and rip offs. Keep up the good work Joel and Ethan Coen. You guys are up to par with films from Billy Wilder!

I saw this alone and at midnight, might be the most unusual movie I've ever seen. In the best possible way.

A great movie- but slightly disturbing. I always felt very sorry for poor old Charlie.

STILL the Coen Brother's greatest achievement. One of the all time great movies, even better than Citizen Kane to my mind.
Won shedloads of prizes and hugely admired all over the world except in it's country of origin. Strange that!

when the bell fink rings and reverberates throughout the hotel and steve bushemi comes out from the trap door is the most eerie thing.

sad how so many great movies are being forgotten lately. Instead of this, I only find more and more comedy's starring Ice Cube in my videostore.

This comment has received too many negative votes show

The Coen Brothers are different than the ordinary movie makers. Intuitive and brilliant they are.

One of the greatest moments of cinema history, a great movie.
His voice is becoming choked. . . . And you come into MY home . . . And you complain that I'M making too . . . much . . . noise.

any relation to millers crossing?

They wrote it in the middle of writing Millers Crossing when they had writers block. They sort of reference Barton Fink in Millers Crossing with the "Barton Arms" apartment building.

At the top list of my favorite films, the Coen Brothers have instilled hope in an industry loaded with sellouts and rip offs. Keep up the good work Joel and Ethan Coen. You guys are up to par with films from Billy Wilder!
