He played Cliff's stuff for Cliff's stuff for 15 years, and I've never heard complaints about any of his performances until fairly recently. I just don't get it, I guess. On another note, I agree with jphv89's comment about a more perfect balance. Sounds cleaner, instead of that weird "woom-woom" sound coming off of what I'm guessing is the remnants of Jason's bass, have never been completely sure what it is or where it coes from.
So you know what I'm referring to. That is great because as soon as I posted that, I thought, " I'm gonna sound like a crazy idiot to anyone who reads that." It sounds like reverb from the guitars, not bass. I've heard anyone play bass that sounds like that.

Metallica were my favourite band at the time and I skipped college to go buy this lp on the day it was released. I couldn't believe what a crock of shit it was, Some of the songs were ok but that production just killed everything stone dead - going from sounding like the Mega City Symphony Orchestra on 'RTL' and 'Master' to cardboard box drums with no bass. Sorry guys Metallica died when Cliff went through the windscreen.
And another thing whilst I'm ranting - Lars commented in kerrang (referring to Dio) that they didn't need 30 foot dragons breathing fire to sell out their shows as the music would do the talking - cut to the Justice tour and the 30 foot collapsing 'Doris' Liberty statue......hmmmm

Sounded angrier with just the guitars...This album fucking decimates....I skipped To_Live_Is_to_Die originally while listening to AFJA because the beginning sounded a little uninteresting and slow...then when it started kicking in I was dumbstruck shitless.
Are there any mids at all in their tone on this song (or on the album)? This song is wicked, and the bass is a special treat, but I wish they'd've spent a little more time tweaking their tone knobs a bit more: it literally hurts my ears to listen to it.
Up is towards the Head of the guitar, making a lower sound. Down is toward the body, making a higher sound. I play bass. That's sliding UP the strings, but the pitch goes DOWN.
He was the new guy, so I bet he was afraid to step on anybody's toes, especially James'. After this album, you hear a lot more personality and originality in his playing.
i personally find that this is jasons best bass work. I can actually hear the bass on the album and ive looked at the notes and i find that note wise it's just just as good as Cliff. Not as innovative but he plays like a true metalhead on this album. Shame his talents were hidden after this.
That is actually Jason's bass track. The video is a rip of someone else's who has used the Rock Band version to extract Jason's track and turn it up. Only difference with this one is that the bass has been turned down slightly.

ya, i know he said that but i think its cool that he did i really do think that bass is important. as a musician in a band, i know exactly how important it is in a band or any type of music. really, i think it does have a lot less bass guitar but i think its fine because its there and i can hear the presence of it and thats really the job of the instrument.

Yeah, but Metallica intentionally dialed Jason out of the mix. They never did treat him as an equal, but it was really bad in the beginning.

Yeah, poor Jason. They really bullied him. But he took it as a challenge to see whether or not he could fill Cliff's shoes. But they also weren't very confident in him either.

in my eyes, jason might not have surpassed cliffs skill as a bass player, but he could def show them he can fill in for someone that's set at such a high standard. jason could do it all, bass, guitar, kick ass vocals. he might not be cliff burton but he's fucking badass either way. sucks they were douchebags to him =/ but anyway, if this album had the bass added originally, it'd be so much better..

He played Cliff's stuff for Cliff's stuff for 15 years, and I've never heard complaints about any of his performances until fairly recently. I just don't get it, I guess. On another note, I agree with jphv89's comment about a more perfect balance. Sounds cleaner, instead of that weird "woom-woom" sound coming off of what I'm guessing is the remnants of Jason's bass, have never been completely sure what it is or where it coes from.

So you know what I'm referring to. That is great because as soon as I posted that, I thought, " I'm gonna sound like a crazy idiot to anyone who reads that." It sounds like reverb from the guitars, not bass. I've heard anyone play bass that sounds like that.

yea but jason has confessed in an interview that it was his fault also that there's no bass in this album cause he wasn't there in the studio playing with them. that's what he said

Metallica were my favourite band at the time and I skipped college to go buy this lp on the day it was released. I couldn't believe what a crock of shit it was, Some of the songs were ok but that production just killed everything stone dead - going from sounding like the Mega City Symphony Orchestra on 'RTL' and 'Master' to cardboard box drums with no bass. Sorry guys Metallica died when Cliff went through the windscreen.

And another thing whilst I'm ranting - Lars commented in kerrang (referring to Dio) that they didn't need 30 foot dragons breathing fire to sell out their shows as the music would do the talking - cut to the Justice tour and the 30 foot collapsing 'Doris' Liberty statue......hmmmm
Metallica/Anthrax at the Manchester Apollo '86 was still one of the best gigs I've ever seen though...........

Oh yeah sorry, I forgot 'Some Kind of Monster' - where the management has to hire a bewildered therapist to get the band to stop hating each other long enough to sit in the same studio to knock out the next identikit 'Tallica 'product'. Even Lars Uncle has to tactfully tell him what a pile of caca his new record is.

I mean... credit to the band for letting the film be made in the first place but the only driving force behind what's left of Metallica is Peter Mensch and Cliff Bernstein screwing as many bucks as they can out of you for yet another limited special edition cd in a tin can or something

Sounded angrier with just the guitars...This album fucking decimates....I skipped To_Live_Is_to_Die originally while listening to AFJA because the beginning sounded a little uninteresting and slow...then when it started kicking in I was dumbstruck shitless.

Are there any mids at all in their tone on this song (or on the album)? This song is wicked, and the bass is a special treat, but I wish they'd've spent a little more time tweaking their tone knobs a bit more: it literally hurts my ears to listen to it.

Up is towards the Head of the guitar, making a lower sound. Down is toward the body, making a higher sound. I play bass. That's sliding UP the strings, but the pitch goes DOWN.

He was the new guy, so I bet he was afraid to step on anybody's toes, especially James'. After this album, you hear a lot more personality and originality in his playing.

i personally find that this is jasons best bass work. I can actually hear the bass on the album and ive looked at the notes and i find that note wise it's just just as good as Cliff. Not as innovative but he plays like a true metalhead on this album. Shame his talents were hidden after this.

That is actually Jason's bass track. The video is a rip of someone else's who has used the Rock Band version to extract Jason's track and turn it up. Only difference with this one is that the bass has been turned down slightly.
