It might be worse than the great depression because a lot more people are dependent on the transportation, energy and, information infrastructure today. In the 30's, a much greater percentage of the people knew how to live off the land and, there was a lot more land relative to the number of people. I happened to have bought a home that was built by Mormons (who believe in stockpiling a two year supply of food), so coincidentally, I have a couple of underground bomb shelter type structures on my property that I use for storage. They are very secure and defensible if the need arises.
I also believe that a 2-3 year supply of food is the most crucial element. Crops can fail or be raided before they can be harvested & farming means staying put in one place for several months.
I have been experimenting with "guerilla gardening" by planting some small patches of Jerusalem Artichokes in the wilderness areas near my home. They are a great staple food, kind of like a potato but much more nutritious. I now have five or six locations where they are growing wild, and where I can go to dig them up... even in the winter, since they are a tuber.
I have also been studying and learning about our local wild edible and medicinal plants for about ten years now.
You shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket. Be prepared to hunt, fish, trap or harvest, in addition to your own stocks of food. One .22 rifle, a few thousand rounds of ammo and some fishing gear can supply you with food no matter where you are. Don't forget about water purification either. For about $200 I purchased enough filtration devices on e-bay to purify about 5,000-7,000 gallons of water.
Of course, this is all in the event of a worst-case scenario... but who knows?

the thing that worries me more is that OPEP's oil is probably already near reaching it's peak. This means that when it happens, the price for oil will boost. It might be worse than the great depression because a lot more people are dependent on the transportation, energy and, information infrastructure today. In the 30's, a much greater percentage of the people knew how to live off the land and, there was a lot more land relative to the number of people. Our population is about 2 1/2 times what it was then. In addition, our enemies may be more inclined, and have more resources, to take advantage of our weakness. Yeah, could be a lot worse.

People always think the end is near. While I do thing eventually we hit the wall at 100 mph, we still have a ways to go. The dollar won't collapse, the world can't let it. I happened to have bought a home that was built by Mormons (who believe in stockpiling a two year supply of food), so coincidentally, I have a couple of underground bomb shelter type structures on my property that I use for storage. They are very secure and defensible if the need arises.
I also believe that a 2-3 year supply of food is the most crucial element. Crops can fail or be raided before they can be harvested & farming means staying put in one place for several months.

I have been experimenting with "guerilla gardening" by planting some small patches of Jerusalem Artichokes in the wilderness areas near my home. They are a great staple food, kind of like a potato but much more nutritious. I now have five or six locations where they are growing wild, and where I can go to dig them up... even in the winter, since they are a tuber.
I have also been studying and learning about our local wild edible and medicinal plants for about ten years now.

You shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket. Be prepared to hunt, fish, trap or harvest, in addition to your own stocks of food. One .22 rifle, a few thousand rounds of ammo and some fishing gear can supply you with food no matter where you are. Don't forget about water purification either. For about $200 I purchased enough filtration devices on e-bay to purify about 5,000-7,000 gallons of water.
Of course, this is all in the event of a worst-case scenario... but who knows?

I have been preping for going on three years now. We are pretty well set for protection and consumption ect. and now I have been putting away stuff for barter purposes. Things like ammo, coffee, silver, liquor, smokes, socks, and the like. All the best to you my friend.

Plus a 9mm S&W pistol that I would even possibly be able to afford would not amount to peanuts when shit hits the fan. To me peoples ignorance is life threatening. It says to not kill. Thats why I sold my gun, the only reason id get one back would be to start robbing to survive, that would be its main purpose.

@MstrMnd420 Agreed, ignorance is very life threatening, and sometimes it's hard to see the end of the race while you're running it. A 9mm is a very weak pistol with low range and pathetic impact. I keep a few guns just for defense and hunting. The commandment to not kill doesn't apply to self defense or war, as is shown throughout the Old Testament. It means to not murder. If you're situation is so bad that you'd rob to survive, then maybe a gun isn't for you. Don't give up hope.

I think your correct on a few things and for more reasons than you listed. Talk to folks at the CDC! Talk about scary ...lots of them have personal contingency plans for a pandemic. Who is to say we will not experience a natural disaster (volcano, asteriod, magnetic storm, etc) that will cause even worse hardship. Even Homeland Security endorses your being prepared scenario.

OK my question to you is why in the world would the Middle East collapse the dollar when most of their money is tied up in US Mortgages? I know there are people who speculate that China or the Middle East would own our loans if we couldnt pay them but your wrong. If they collapse the dollar it destroys their entire economy. the thing that worries me more is that OPEP's oil is probably already near reaching it's peak. This means that when it happens, the price for oil will boost. And on a worse case scenario, it will end. Imagine what that will do to economy worldwide. In the meantime, I know many don't believe this, oil companies are using a fuckload of coal to extract oil. If people knew that these two are the biggest poluting substances on earth, they'd believe the global warming.

Yes sir, guns can be kept dry and so can rice, beans, medical supplies and other items that a person would like to protect as well as keeping them in a place that they wont be found. PVC pipe can be buried next to existing water or sewer pipes. It can be buried out in the woods or next to an existing fence line or anywhere else that would be convenient to the Patriot.
