Xenakis popularized the "stochastic" term to apply to his music. As I understand it, stochastic comes from probability theory and denotes a process in which steps are governed by rules of probability. I've used a couple of different programs to generate music. The fractal music was made with a program called Mandel32. It generates an image based on user input and creates music from the data selected between points A and B on the image.
Aha! I heard he wanted to capture natural processes like the falling rain.
I need some kind of compositional tool, computer software. Can you recommend some program that can handle nested polyrhythms, shifting metres, the like AND has a decent sound? Most composers use Sibelius, I heard. This program sounds pretty good, too
The man who is credited with originating fractal geometry, Benoit Mandelbrot, was certainly looking for a mathematical way to define natural processes like falling rain. His book is called "The Fractal Geometry of Nature". I don't have Sibelius, but I think it's notation software. If you want something that will create music, search for fractal music software or Mandelbrot music, or stochastic music software. There are many available as free downloads.
I have a some videos called "Composition for Orhcestra". For these I used a program created by Louis Maria Rojas called Texture 3.0. With this program the user "weights" certain outcomes (pitches, durations, etc) so that the statistical probability of their selection by the program is increased. The product is more truly "stochastic" (in a strict sense) than the fractal music. I think I probably used the term stochastic in the tag for this because the outcome seemed sort of Xenakis-like to me
hi, i like your stuff. and your mind, approach, experimental-ness etc. this particular piece is great for an awesome scary movie soundtrack. do you collaborate? I've generated similar sounds using eeg/bio of my own brainwaves during mediatation...
Max, I originally began eeg/biofeedback to generate my own ecstatic brain state w/o drugs! then some of us are also using it to generate music. ***** Basically, you put electrodes on the scalp (goopy paste is used for contact), connect to your special computer interface that converts brainwaves to digital signals, and you meditate. Your software can be programmed to generate musical tones corresponding to your various brainwave frequencies as you generate them. The results are awesome.
Wanted to see the graphics but the music messed me up badly so i moved on aqap (about 7 seconds) Would have turned the sound down but figured messed up music = person = frac. Sorry.

Did Stephen King build this computer by any chance?

Actually that is less random than some stuff I've heard from Freejazzers.

This is great!! Can you explain stochastic music without going into enormous detail?

I don't know anything about the eeg/bio in relation to the generation of sounds. How does it work?
