I have one solution. Imagine a red-light district for religion. You have to be able to identify yourself as >18 to enter. I call this concept giving children their right to religious freedom back. =)
Combine that with proper education in secular schools, with high emphasis on understanding the scientific methodology and ability to spot bogus arguments.
Would it work? Perhaps not, but one way or another we need to make sure our society stays secular.
Change can only come from within a Society/Culture/Religion. Force will never work & it wouldn't matter if you were to bang the drums of rational thought for a billion years you still won't see change or evolution at the end of it. We didnt learn anything from WW1, WW2 and if WW3 every comes we certainly wont learn from that either or any other war after that. This argument is not rational. There will be force at work even if change comes from within. There are many historical examples of minorities being forced to accept the culture of the majority. It may be called oppression, but it certainly works when enough force is applied.
I also wonder how you see cultures that practice deathpenalties against any opposition will ever change from within.
Atheism won't make the world peaceful, but it will remove one irrational factor from conflicts.
When it comes from within most of the time the ideas have been accepted, only a few external ones work because they are excepted from within. All Major religion/ All political ideas have work that way.
You need majority of people against old ideologies to work. When they themselves don't get up against it, it won't work. That is why you won't see democracy work in Iraq or any other countries in the middle east or Asia.
Atheism is simply doing what Religions have been doing for thousands of years. I see problems too, but I don't see a solution to them not from anyone or any side. I think everyone has recongized that, there is a problem but what is the next step? I could bitch on about Problems, problems, problems, but that aint going to solve anything. If you want to start somewhere, you might as well understand the other side. You never know, you might find more rational being then you might have imagined their to be.

Well, one of the big problems I see is a lot of people claiming that certain things aren't a problem. They call it political correctness, I call it bullshit.
There are no rational religious extremists, if they were rational, they wouldn't be religious extremists.

As for the rest of the "damn world", as you so eloquently call it, no man is an island. If someone in Iran or Russia or Pakistan decides to launch a nuclear weapon, the consequences will reach me and everyone else.

The americans (and westerners in general, btw) who convert to islam are an insignificant minority compared to the muslim immigrants.
