This is so true, so few people adopt the older cats but they have already been neutered and are usually much easier especially as a first cat, great advert :)
Sadly My mum wants to buy a kitten but they're very hard to find and get by the time i go back to school (9th Jan), we were getting a kitten but sadly she got cat flue and cannot be delivered for a long time :'(. I begged her to get a fully grown (18 mnth) old cat but she won't budge :(
Whenever people go to a kitty shelter they head for the cute little kittens, never thinking that adult cats need love too. Especially those mature cats that may have a medical problem, or may be lamed of be partially blind. Unless those elder cats have been mistreated they will make fine pets and love you forever.
I have a 1 1/2 year old kitty. We are Wanting to gte another do you think a exotic short hair would get along well with her? my kitty i have now, patches is so lovebale but shes doesnt like anyone else except for me my mom and my dad help??
They should send all of shelter cats to Asia, particularly to my country (Indonesia). It's so hard to find lots of cats' breed here and if they were available they wouldn't come cheap. I love your Ragamuffin.
Very good advice. People should also consider older kittens (8-12 months). Often these wonderful young cats are ignored for the younger, smaller kittens, but, as with an adult, you know more what you're getting because their personalities are clearer. Also don't ignore the black cats. They're often the last to be adopted for reasons I do not understand. Remember black is the new black and a black cat goes with everything!
I adopted an adult cat. He was free and came with litterbox, dishes, toys and a catbed. He was also neutered, litterbox trained and well behaved. Buy a kitten - pay for everything, do all the training yourself. Find an adult cat for free on kijiji/craigslist, get everything for free. He doesn't like people he doesn't know, but he enjoys the company of my husband and myself, and loves to follow us from room to room. It's worth getting an adult!
I got my Shadow (literally...he follows me everywhere) when he was over a year old, found him crying under some bushes, and he gave me a kiss on the cheek when I told him he was staying with me. He even made a little *smack* sound! A very special moment started a very special relationship. 9 years later, he still waits for me by the front door and literally hops with joy when I come home. Adult cats are the best. They know they were saved!
Beautiful cats. Every cat I've ever adopted has been two or older, with the exception of two kittens. The problem is that three of the adult cats peed all over the house. I guess they didn't like the other cats I had at the time. :(
I only adopt adult cats. The only kitten I ever have (who now lives healthy with my sister in Florida,) Was 5 days old when he was thrown over a six foot picket fence with an eye infection. I've had my Calico cat who is at least 8 now for something of six years, She was shot before she was brought to the shelter, and has always had a bald spot on her side. She is more than plenty spoiled now, especially since she'll only eat high-quality food.
@anneracht Aww thank you - such sweet comments! Penny is an absolute dream. Such a sweetheart. I so adore her. She's also absolutely smitten wiith my boyfriend and will sit next to him staring at him till he pets her. And if he doesn't she starts pawing his hand LOL
Hi. I just adopted a 2 year old male neutered cat. Took it home but it is fearful, won't eat, won't drink. It is very gentle to handle. Any tips how to make this cat warm up to his new surroundings?
@Aspie12345 Put it in one room with food, water, litter. Being in a new home can be very scary for a cat. Let it get used to that room and feel safe and THEN allow it to explore the rest of the home. Also keep the room quiet. If you have kids - keep them out. And tell them not to race around the house, scream.
@Aspie12345 Leave kitty alone, allow it access to food and water, and don't attempt to handle it. Ignore it if you see it. Allow him to wander around freely and check out the whole house. If he hides, put water and food near his hiding spot (so he doesn't have to go far to get it) and continue to ignore him. Eventually he'll be confident enough to come out and start acting normally again. Then you can work on coaxing him to yourself for pets.
Penny is sooo cute ^^ I have 2 cats, one i adopted from a shelter who i a grumpy fat kitty but i love him otherwise, My other cat was my next door neighbours old cat who they used to abuse and who was left outside for months on end since they are ''allergic to Cats'' (Wtf?) whom we found licking a chocolate bar wrapper out of my bin outside, we took him in straight away! :D Adopt an adult Cat!
@kolew394 Just because a cat has pointed markings doesn't make it "Siamese". What you have there is a kitten of no particular breed just like over 97% of the cats on this entire planet. Hope you have the $300-$400 to get it altered, up to date on shots, deflead, dewormed, tested for disease and microchipped? There's no such thing as "free" kittens.
I got a kitten only because there was farmer and he was giving away free kittens, and my family already agreed to getting a kitten for me, and it was perfect! I'm totally into adopting older cats, there are way too many in the shelter these days! My other cat was adopted too, as an adult. :D
I agree with you! So many people ignore the Adult cats because they're "Not as cute" as the kitten! It is so annoying! Every cat needs a chance to live a happy life! :)
We don't have cats as Seamus does not get on with them, but all but 3 of our ferrets were adopted as adults - everyone wanted kits :(
Our friend runs the local ferret rescue and 4 of young Buster's brothers and sisters have landed there - so I shudder to think of where he could have ended up... Our dog was 7 when we adopted him and he is fantastic!
I volunteer at a no-kill shelter in Illinois and I love it when people get an adult cat instead of a kitten. As you said everyone wants kittens and they just pass up wonderful adult cats cause they think it won't love them as much as a kitten. Since I started in July of 2008 we've had 202 felines adopted. Only 56 were adults and out of them 6 were adopted by cat volunteers.
Penny is so cute, and Mocha is beautiful! I agree with you. I love my cat, I adopted him when he was 6 years old. I don't think I could handle a kitten.
My point of posting this was because so many people walk right past the adult cats and pick kittens. And what happens to many of those adult cats? If it's not a no-kill shelter they end up euthanized. Kittens are far less often euthanized since they're deemed "more adoptable" and if a shelter has a choice between taking in a new litter of kittens or keeping the five older cats the older cats will lose. Percy was in a kill shelter. Had I not picked him I hate to think what could have happened.
LOL doesn't it? I was just snapping some still photos on various settings of her. It makes her red show really vibrant. Also Mocha's colours show up much better.

i read somewhere that a 3-colored cat keeps the owners home safe from fire.
legomidnight 10 months ago
@legomidnight LOL that's nonsense. She's really only two colours - Red Classic Tabby and White. Just darker shade of the Red in her tabby patterning.

What a beautiful advert for adults. Sometimes I think Mocha should be in commercials, she knows her cues so well! *lol*
"This is Cafe Mocha Valencia-"
"Mew!" ("Yes, that's me!")

@MsStarsea LOL I have thought about that! She takes direction well, too. Look at her cat show vids. She just sits there and poses!

Picking a shelter animal saves two lives. The animal that goes home and the room made for another one.

Any that you make a connection with. Age shouldn't really matter.
If you meet a kitten or an elderly cat that you just click with...take them home. : )
Cl0wnCar0nFire 2 years ago
And by 'age shouldn't matter, I mean if you click with a cat, ignore the age and take it home.
I am in support of adopting anything. Adults, kittens, whatever!
I do wish more people would adopt adults though, of course.
