• As a 14 year old who first encountered this album in 1979 this was a truly gripping song (it still has the same effect today) It formed part of a wonderful Side 1 to an album which, for me in truth fell away on Side 2, but which in the end became the first in a truly magnificent trilogy. It's as if 3 light years was the joint A side album to Out of the Blue, different but equally magnificent. Lennon was on to something when he called ELO 'son of Beatles'; brilliant musical evolution.
To me On the Third Day and Out of the Blue are ELOs greatest albums. In Out of the Blue there is a good mix of cliché hits and other impressive tracks like Jungle and Sweet is the Night. On the Third Day has some hits that weren't as well known as well as two of my favorite songs in general: Oh No Not Susan and New World Rising/Ocean Breakup. It's a shame that these two are not more well known. It also sucks that, being 14, no one cares or knows who ELO is even though Jeff Lynn is a genius and
I am a long time ELO fan but hadn't heard this one,i think it is ELO at their rawest before the studio polished them into a mainstream band with mass appeal. i think jeff's earlier work is his best,"face the music" being my favourite album.
Does your copy of the vinal have the words or lyics of the songs on the record jacket? It was white and the album was also white with the photo of the group on the cover.
yeah, a white album with a b/w band pic on the front, but no lyrics on the record.
and,
that radio thing was a unique kind of special performance, it wasn't a question of "do they have some hits"... it was more a radio show with some djas who's playing good records.
I think the white cover with "belly button" band pic was the US release, although I have it in clear Vinyl but without showdown which was omitted from the UK version so ??????
Thieir best Album with Eldorado and Face the music a close third

@ELOfan13 I grew up with them and on the 3rd, Eldorado and face the music in my opinion is some of the best stuff jeff lynne ever wrote.

My great uncle was the drummer in this band.
this song is about his fiance selfishness, Susan who committed suicide after he left her to come to America to become famous.

@Quinnellea Oh wow, your great uncle was Bev Bevan. I met him once in Toledo Ohio. E.L.O. Part II was playing at the Stranahan theatre.

This reminds me of a susan i thought i knew, did susan know susan....? the memory and the lesson , from the tree of woe came the fruit of wisdom.

To me, this song feels as though its about Susan from CSLewis' CON reflecting on the path her life has taken.
(probably was never intended to be.. but to me the words and feeling seem to fit)
loveley song

True it did, but it got a hell of a lot of airplay. And its one of the Best ELO songs. Its how ELO should sound.
