this song makes me feel sad, but somehow that makes me feel good.. i still remember the wave of shivers i got from this when it first came through the headphones <3
The brass with the smashing glass ending is the most beautiful ending to any song ever, my favourite Elbow song and one of the most beautiful songs of all time.
personal id rather them stay under the radar. cant stand it when bands really make it big, thats just me tho. their best song by far and probably one of the best songs ever written.
@WanderingTwin1 I wouldn't go so far as to say I dislike it whn a band you've followed for a while makes it "big" but I know what you mean; I went to see this lot around 2001-ish and it the gig had an intimate feel to it. I'm due to see them in Manchester (MEN Arena I think) next month and while I'm sure the gig wil be mint, it won't have the same feel it did nearly ten years ago.
No matter how many times I listen to this (or any Elbow track) I never get sick of the big moments like at 3:32 .... 18 seconds worth of pure Guy Garvey bliss.
I've known and loved this song since I bought the album when it first came out, but for whatever reason after all these years it has clicked with me again on a deeper level and I can't stop listening to it. Such an astonishing song.
great idea with the breaking glass. i nver even thought beyond coke though. you say "powder", i think coke. the breaking glass can be a metaphor in addition to a simple musical car-crash sudden-end. The breaking glass can go far though.
To reply to Simon0 I think the breaking glass at the end is when the girl in the song drops her syringe just after shooting up, the shooting up depicted by the horn-like sounds just before. What does anyone else think?
Incidentally, this song has 'heroin' written all over it... Two addicts lost in their mutual love of each other and their drug of choice... "Stumble through the crowds together, they're trying to ignore us, that's ok. I'm proud to be the one you hold when the shakes begin..." Plus 'china white' is another name for it I think.
Reckon the slightly disturbing sax followed by the smashing glass at the end symbolises the girl OD-ing and the shattering of the illusion of happiness.
I think you've pretty much nailed it with that assessment. Always loved this tune, and the breaking glass at the end. So sudden, so violent and unexpected. A lot like life can be.
I remember hearing New Born for the first time way back when and being blown away... A part of me echoes getcarter15's bitterness at them being 'discovered' after all this time, but who are we musical elitists to stand in the way of sharing the joy with everyone else? ;-) Super Furry Animals are the last bastion of supreme music overlooked by the masses - Rings Around The World being an especially fine example of their talent. Not as much raw emotion as Elbow, but musical genius nonetheless.
@mattjoubs have you listened to this whole albumn? (asleep in the back).
This is the only one i have heard i think its an outstanding albumn. tiem to move onto some others. I am not necessarily expecting them to be as good as this one.
the band-wagon this is a bit annoying, its great for them obviously but you kinda feel 'the secret's out' if you've been a fan for years when they were'nt getting much attention and all of a sudden everyones now talking abou them. One thing they are not though is over-rated - Not much is said about their previous three albums and they are all easily as good as the new one
after several listens i thk i can safely say i prefer asleep in the back by quite a long way. But that doesnt mean seldom seen kid is a bad albumn. it still has a lot of songs on it i like. but not quite as spectacular as asleep in the back albumn
@banderhoos Music isn't football... there can be different great artists existing at the same time; Comparingthem to each other shows the smallness of your mind, not the difference between them
8 years, wow. Remember me and my mate getting stoned to this album in year 10, it was sweet. The first song freaked us out, everything else was lovely, except that song with the weird buzzing sound in it, when my mate fell over in the bathroom, knocked himself out and had a dream about bees chasing him.

There are few artists that so eloquently create musical atmospheres such as Elbow.
The interwoven artistry of lyric, the instrumental sonic bed and timbre of Guy's voice near a perfection rarely achieved in modern music.
To my ear it is as perfect as much of Pink Floyd's work.
Truly impeccable.

Heheh! I understand what you mean - it's like something special is being taken away from you - a selfish and elitist view perhaps, but fuck 'em :)
10 albums in and I don't think SFA will ever sell millions, but as long as they keep on doing what they do the world will be a better place.

so i am new to elbow. I got their first albumn asleep in the back, AWESOME albumn! I like EVERY song on the albumn (rare for me).
Now i just got the seldom kid, so far seems not bad not sure cause i havent listened to it enough. Mirrorball grabbed me on the first listen.
