The rudder causes the plane to roll because there is too much throw. I had the same problem when I constructed this one. I also noticed the tendency to come nose down first at stall speeds, even tho Balanced. Fixed this by adding some canards to the front of the plane near the battery bay. Also added some air inlets at front near the battery bay to create air flow over the some of the electronics. Use a 40 amp ESC if you like me live in Barbados or say bye to that motor.keep up the good work.
gggdawg42 do as much research as you can on the many rc plane build threads in the forums on the internet. It will help give you ideas of what will work and what won't. Don't be afraid to experiment and remember most of the time it will not work the first time but don't give up just keep making changes till it does work. Also bare airframe glide testing to find the correct cg will help you get the plane ready for the maiden flight. Good luck with your builds!!
Thanks McIF01!! I still haven't got to drawing up the dimensions for the new Bullet Plane so there are no pdf plans at the moment. I keep meaning to do them but it's getting harder and harder to find time to do it. As we have grown we are spending more and more time answering emails and comments but I will eventually post the plans on the blog so please keep checking.
McIF01 I never built one with a zagi wing before but it sounds like a cool experiment. I think you should give it a try. You should do some glide tests before you put all the equipment into the plane to get you close with the cg. If you build it let us know how it goes. Good luck!!
RCFLIGHTHELP to be honest I haven't really thought about building any aerobatic planes. Mainly because they are front engine planes and this concerns me when it comes to crashing which I seem to do a lot, lol!! Pusher planes and mid motor planes are much more forgiving in a crash. Who knows maybe in the future I'll learn how to fly and then I can start building planes with the motor on the front, lol!!!
Thanks for the 5* Barb!! This is my best build yet! I love the way this plane flies and even though we haven't had a chance to put the radar gun to it I feel the new Bullet Plane lives up to its name. I'm hoping it will get me into the triple digit club with Paul and hopefully be one of the first KF airfoil planes to break 100mph. That would be cool!! Good luck with this month's drawing!!!
FlyHighRC386 I never really checked what the wing loading is. The plane weighs about 31oz now. The wing span is 28 inches, 18 inches wide at the chord and 5.5 inches wide at the wing tips. This is including the elevons. I'm guessing the wing loading is pretty high. The KFm2 airfoil seems to be making up for the extra lift needed and makes the plane feel much lighter in the air than it really is.
Thanks dick! Without your invention none of this would be possible. It's incredible how much better the new Bullet Plane flies!! It's awesome how much float the plane has with the KFm2 and how stable it flies. This plane only has a 28 inch wing span and weighs in at over 30 oz which is very heavy for a plane this size yet it flies very light. Paul and I will continue to explore the other KF airfoil configurations. Do you know if anyone has broke 100mph with a KF yet?
Another great job, Fran and Paul. I'm so please with the way the plane handles. Thank you both so much for believing in this airfoil concept. What also pleases me is that there are so many KFm variations that you can experiment with and still have the control authority.
That Turnigy motor is really great. Didja bench test the current draw at WOT? I burned a couple of those motors by (a) not re-checking the current after changing prop size, and (b) frying a SS 40A ESC that then went DC on one of the windings. Craps.
SomeUselessGeek these Turnigy motors are awesome!! They put out gobs of power. I forgot to check the current draw with these new Turnigy 2650mAh LiPo batteries before going out to Herman airport. I figured they wouldn't be much different than the Rhino 2250mAh ones I used on the Tailless Delta wings. The motor is rated at 480watts. When I got home and tested with the new batteries I got a surprise, 567Watts @ 46amps, WOW!! That's about 60 watts and 3 amps more than with the old batteries.
Nice one boy's that plane really does move ;-) so have you had a chance to do any mixing on your TX for the rudder yet?? glad your happy with it but why wouldn't you be ;-)=5*
Thanks for the 5* startazz!!! I haven't had the chance to take her out again since last weekend so I still need to play around with the mixing. The weather is supposed to be nice this weekend so I'm sure I'll try it then. That and I want to get some speed runs at the radar gun too. I'm very happy the way the plane turned out and how it flies. It doesn't have any of the issues the old Bullet Plane had.
tension888 we do break props on occasion and some days more than others. We always bring extra ones. They are cheap, only a couple dollars each so it's not a big deal, and it's all a part of the hobby.
Man! That thing rips! Gotta' have one those! Get the radar gun! Could you put a kit together for me? (built up and taped, minus servos, wing and fuse doesn't have to be attached with motor & esc, minus battery) Or, just sell me that one. I'm still working 12 hr. shifts and leaves no time to build. Gee, retirement can't come soon enough!
grayshoaf sorry we don't sell any kit of our planes. It is just too time consuming. Like you both Paul and I work full-time and spend all our free-time building new planes to put out new videos. It's like having two full-time jobs. Only the second one is much more enjoyable!
No problem garyshoaf. Can't blame a guy for trying! As for finding the time, It can be very difficult. As I mentioned before it's like having a second full-time job but both Paul and I enjoy it.
wildhover thanks again for posting your videos!! I never would have tried the KFm2 on this plane if it weren't for your videos. The plane has lost all its bad traits and flies the way I expected it to originally. Can't get over how well this 30+ oz plane just float with no throttle.
I also had the same issues with the plane wanting to rise when throttled using the KFm2 and added downthrust using washers on the top motor mounts. can't wait to see what the doppler display reads!
Thanks wildhover! I guess this is one of the traits of the KFm2. I ended up moving the cg forward about 1/2 inch and adding washers at the top of the motor mount. The plane still has some down trim in the elevator too. I might move the battery a little farther forward but not just yet. I like the way it's flying and want to see how it flies without all that wind. Have you ever used doppler on your planes? if so where do you get the program? I know how it is suppose to work but have never used it
Frank, I have also never used a doppler in my life (saw other people use it while I was in the military though). I made an assumption that the Bushnel radar gun was using doppler technology. So how does speed gun work? Laser?
wildhover you are right about the radar gun using Doppler. I was a little confused when you first said Doppler. I thought you were referring to those Doppler programs that you can load wave sound files into to get a speed reading. You record the sound of the plane coming straight at you and past you using a laptop or video recorder then convert to a wave file, load into the Doppler program and it somehow uses the pitch changes in the wave file to determine the speed of the plane.
Thanks RCcanuck!! I was extremely Pleased at how well the KFm2 made this plane fly. It almost flies it's self. Actually had my hands of the stick a few times and it tracks awesome!!
Cant hear frank at all all i hear is the camera man.. I like the voice overs on the film to let us know what the conversation was all about.. The chat during the film is very hard to understand.
BMFoamy there was a lot of wind that day and I think Paul wasn't standing close enough to me. Sorry for the poor sound but I notice if you turn the base down you can hear the voices a little better.
Thanks Azer831!! It was pretty windy but the planes didn't seem to mind it. I'm sure it's the extra weight that helps so much in these conditions. We tend to build our planes pretty heavy but as long as you've got the power to push them it doesn't really matter.
Jon thanks for having us out at Herman airport again. It was great to maiden the Bullet Plane in such a big place. I'm really glad you liked the plane. It may to be a little while before we can release any plans for this one because I still need to get the dimensions off the plane for Paul so he can draw them up in AutoCAD then convert them to pdf files. Not to mention he is already working on the resized FF-23, KF condor, and his new Aurora speed plane plans. Hopefully not too long.
Awesome plane Humphrey! That's how the old bullet plane should have flown. I think this one will break into the three digit speed realm. Good work mang.
Thanks Mike! I liked the way this one flew right from the first toss. It got even better after it was dialed in and flying level without wanting to pull up all the time. I think the New Bullet Plane is a lot faster than it looks in this video because the area we were flying in was much larger than our regular flying field and that can make it look deceiving. I can't wait to get her out again and do some radar gun passes. Hopefully this next weekend if the weather stays good.
OMFG great plane keep building pal your a pro
