I was at this part last night, and I spent hours doing exactly what you did.. then I came up with the same idea as Joan.. they don't jump into the pit, but they stop right at the edge.. I didn't think about trying the nades + didn't have canon
I tried this, but the spike pit always closed on me, I resorted to cheating but ...the video i recorded was bloody hilarious, I will post it as a response to this.
@JoanMichele I actually once did like that. But when the bulls came I let one of em hit me to the other side. And almost all of em dropped to the pit, but some got past somehow. So I saved one and walked to the place where the kleers come with that bull and let that bull to knock me again to the other side. But I think your strategy is a bit easier :D
I had to do this the hard way... (no rocket jumping or cannon), but I made it after countless amount of tries.
First: Shoot a load of grenades on their way until you're out of nades
Second: do the same with the Rocket launcher until you run out of rockets or they get too close
Third: Grab the Laser Cannon and fire away (it's pretty effective on massive waves)
Fourth: If you didn't kill them yet, use the Minigun
Fifth: If you still didn't make it, you must be playing on harder that medium...

You should have whipped out the laser cannon after running out of minigun bullets. You might have been able to hold 'em off a little longer.

You should run back and Rocket-Jump across the spike pit. Then sit back and watch as the kleers fall into the spike pit one by one. :D

Played the original SSFE, this part can be done with the grenade launcher. Each grenade can kill a bunch of them at once, unlike the rockets.

It's in the beginning of this area of the level, there's a hidden wall that you can destroy on the right.
