hundreds and hundreds of hands online? calling oop with T3o? instinctively knowing your hand is good? No, all the draws just happened to miss. Live poker makes you want to laugh.
a)Insta all in - No time to process how/what the river card affected Mercier. If he took a while then shoved or bet, Mercier would have probably laid it down. Basically, timing of the all in. Mercier knows he didn't have time to think the new change in board texture through. Therefore, most likely a bluff.
b)If Mercier thought that his 5 was good on the turn, that river card changed absolutely nothing. He has to follow through on the river.
Then as chance would have it he was @ the Grand Opening of the Poker Room I work at, and he was nice enough to discuss the hand with me. He is simply one of the best players around and a great guy, a lethal combo and he deserves everything he has.
True story, I was in a $1500 event down here and pulled off a sick bluff on Jason. He raised cut off 2.5x and i flatted out of BB w/67 off. Flop came AQx 2 diamonds, I check raised him when he made what looked like to me a c bet. Turn came a diamond, and I bet 1/4 of my stack, he had around the same and flatted. River paired one of the x cards, I sent in 1/2 of what I had left. He tanked for 3 minutes and laid it down. Those 3 minutes I was in hell trying to figure out wtf I was thinking.
@NoHoldeMeBack LOL wtf would you check raise 6 7 off you're so bad. You just made up your mind from the flop to go with it till the river regardless of board texture changes and that's what donks do. GG
@MegaROFLPWND actually you are 100% wrong. When he called the flop it was obvious he either floated me or called lite. The turn being a 3rd flush card made my check raise look more believable. When he called the turn I was not sure where I was at, but I had him on a high Diamond draw so when the river paired, I figured it was mine to take. I did not shove cause I felt like it would look like what this guy did, and my bet seemed to get the job done.
@NoHoldeMeBack anybody can bluff. It's just that essentially making a move on that board with 6 7 off... There's nothing +ev or profitable about it risking your whole tournament life out of position.
@MegaROFLPWND Yes anyone can bluff. My move had nothing to do with the cards I was holding, it was about defending and showing that I was not going to get ran over. 2nd, I risked over 1/2 my stack, not my "tournament life". This hand was very profitable it terms of my stack, and my image that I was not afraid of anyone. This is not your simple Bluff, it was a complex hand against one of the best players in the world. If you sit around and wait for AA, that's great.
@NoHoldeMeBack I also played w/ mercier at foxwoods, pca 25k and 5k where I came 2nd he came in 3rd. It's better to play better players in position with complete air than out of position that's all.
@MegaROFLPWND Of course its better to be in position. I thought the timing was good since no one had shown any resistance to him coming over and running over the table. You know there is sooo much more to poker outside the cards.
@MegaROFLPWND But its been my experience through the years that hands like these can be the difference in cashing. With having to show the hand, it made everyone second guess who I was. The typical "random player" is not capable of executing a bluff like this one. I proceeded with my play based on Jason is a great player, and that he was more then capable of putting me on a big hand based on the way I painted the picture. Anyways, don't really need to defend myself to anyone.
@NoHoldeMeBack Dude.. I will pay for your plane ticket to Vegas, if you promise to bring as much as you want to gamble with me.. You just got called by a pair of 5's!.. lol..
@NoHoldeMeBack I know how to read, as evidenced by the 2 posts I HAVE WRITTEN.. See how that works, brother?.. BTW, offer still stands, I'll buy your plane ticket to Vegas, if you bring and promise to lose at least 10K.. I'll get you a room at the Bellagio, too..
Goes all in really fast on the River and stands up and paces around frantically while starting and trying to be intimidating.
Sounds like a bluff to me unless he's doing theee ole reverse psychology method by trying to give the classic signs of a bluff to hide the strength of a hand. He couldve easily had 8,7 right there and hit the trips on the end. That's what I wouldve put him on and I wouldve folded

instant jam on the river is stupid, it sorta makes him unable to rep the 8 as that is the only thing that he is reping, no bet on the flop would make him have small chance of having a J and. and instant jam pretty much just makes his hand too polarized, and actually not able to rep any strong hand either cause you'd think abit with your strongest hands too. dude fumbled and jason had the good skill of picking up on that
the call was more incredible because this was a break out for Jason...yeah, he was doing well as treysfull on PStars, but this win and specifically this call made all the difference...that and killing Dario with some nastiness lol...
@survivalisme88 Not just 4 of the 5, but you need one card right in the middle of the straight as opposed to either end (aka open-ended straight draw).
@NLHEGambler1 We call it a "gut-shot straight draw" -- where your straight can only be completed by one card in the middle of the straight. Can't imagine what they call an open-ended straight draw.
pretty insane, i woulda been like "oh your chips, i love your chips!" pouring em through my hands. pretty insane tho, that insta shove is the give away, would anyone really shove like that, ever? tho i probably woulda folded...
I'm definitely calling, but only based on Koskas body language. Had it been replayed and been an internet hand, or been against a better player that gave nothing away, I'd muck without question. But you can tell blatantly that Koskas doesn't want a call.
Either way, thats a tough call to make with bottom pair unless you have a solid read. Mercier obviously felt good about his read and made the call. Great job.
Tbh, I think Koskas played this well, albeit for a very quick all in move. Pretty much anyone else would have folded the winning hand (me included), which meant this was a damn good (and gutsy) bluff imo, and whereas I usually agree with the general consensus of comments, I disagree with the 'Koskas played this one bad' feeling here.
I would have folder faster than a fat man sitting on a cheap chair. Jason must have had a read on this guy or figured that the guy missed his straight and bluffed. Wow. Daniel Negreanu said that Jason was toughest player he ever played against and this hand shows why.
It's a great call - but Koskas's body language screams weakness, especially the snap jam on the river. Imagine if he actually had top pair or a similarly strong hand - there's no way he would have played the hand like that.
@stankeyleg00 lol , do u see how that fish went all in? :) watever...u don't know sir these kind of things about poker. i play since 2004 by the way, and winning (but that's a dif story) end of conversation.
people don't usually instabet with a good hand, that's why betting fast is a tell for bluffing. When you have a good hand you think about how to get the most money possible
This discussion lacks the fact that he bets 220k into a 187k pot IMMEDIATELY as the 8 hits on the turn. What can you really put him on here? Koskas' demeanour is just another ball game...
if you sort of think about it, he's repping more than just three eights. mercier calls on the turn means mercier either has a draw or, well, an 8. So he's made his hand into 9 7, 5 7, a boat, or any combo-bluff. i think mercier is a nice player and he seems to be a nice guy.
seriously i think easy call , koskas showed that many signs that he was bluffing , flat call preflop check in dark , over bet the turn more than the pot , then quick shove on river as soon as card hits table normally indicates a bluff / picked off well by mercier
@dothequack yes was an easy call , played texas 23 yrs now and could easily make that call ... im a winning player live and online / and got the stats to back it , sharkscope me if ya think im taLKIN SHIT / MRBOOYEAH / PKR POKER... PEOPLE WHO CANT CALL THIS ARE THE 80% MUPPETS THAT LOOSE TO ME DAILY HAHA
@1984socrates Way more than 90 percent would of folded, no one could or should normally be thinking of shoving with bottom pair, but then again koskas's All in looked like he over bet so much that it could of been an outright bluff, great call
@1984socrates: True story, i'm not going to lie, I like to think of myself as a superhero in the Poker world, but my hands go up here it would have been folded.
at --> htt p://ww w.pok erstra tegy.co m/#uGTF9S you can get 50 dollars if u pass a quiz, however some people might have to do an id-test aswell. this is safe, over 3 million people have already done it. i pass this link on cause i will achieve 10 dollars or something per person who joins- and im doing that ofc, because im broke fml. dont do like me- loosing the 50 dollars within the hour. Gl
More like millions of hands online, and it was a great call by Mercier who is one of the best if not the best NLH tourney player around right now. Why is it negative comments always get the top comments? Koskas obviously played it like a donk but he was blinded by trying to outplay Mercier at all costs and it cost him, a seasoned pro like Mercier can pick up on these things.
@99sjur i'm not saying that bluffing is bad playing. at the beginning Koskas just called instead of re-raising, and checked on the flop. then all of sudden he went all in, and starts to stand up. I mean, come on? Sit the fuck down. Don't express feelings when you are playing. He starts to walk around like a twat and drinks out of an empty bottle at 2:42.
@extremleise actually the quick all in is fine, it's standing up, moving left and right nervously that ruins it. I mean ok even if you're short stack against someone with a much bigger one, if you all-in so fast you better appear more confident
SI es muy buen call pero también es verdad que se le nota el farol, da muchas pistas y Mercier si pierde aún puede sguir jugando... pero buen call ojo.
@Tehui1974 there are about 50 different countries in europe, all with completely differential cultures...if you really think there is a "typical european" then...well I don't know what then, go figure :) ...
@lordhuebi Yep, I admit I'm generalising. But having played a lot of Spanish, Italian & Eastern european players on line, they do tend to be rip, sh!t & bust players.
Koskas was far too demonstrative in his actions...standing up immediately, pacing, continuously drinking. His eyes and body language suggested that he was desperate to win this hand...so desperate that he's probably bluffing. Mercier took his time to fully read that and it paid off for him.

sitting behind your computer with no pressure at all watching a hand where you can see both hands is nothing like the real situation.
No matter how bad this guy played this hand, 90 % off the internethero's probably would have folded this hand.
1984socrates 1 month ago 22
@1984socrates Way more than 90 percent would of folded, no one could or should normally be thinking of shoving with bottom pair, but then again koskas's All in looked like he over bet so much that it could of been an outright bluff, great call

@1984socrates 90%? i would say 99% :p

Whew! Glad I watched this. Now I know not to raise with 10 - 3, then push all in, with absolutely nothing. Good teaching moment!

amazing how bad some of these "pros" play sometimes.... this guy shipped off his entire stack with 10 / 3 deep in a big tournament. wtf?

More like millions of hands online, and it was a great call by Mercier who is one of the best if not the best NLH tourney player around right now. Why is it negative comments always get the top comments? Koskas obviously played it like a donk but he was blinded by trying to outplay Mercier at all costs and it cost him, a seasoned pro like Mercier can pick up on these things.

@sutro19 he shouldnt go all in .. it was unnatural

@sutro19 if he bluffs an eight ...
googlekopfkind 1 month ago
@sutro19 It's called bluffing
99sjur 1 month ago
@99sjur i'm not saying that bluffing is bad playing. at the beginning Koskas just called instead of re-raising, and checked on the flop. then all of sudden he went all in, and starts to stand up. I mean, come on? Sit the fuck down. Don't express feelings when you are playing. He starts to walk around like a twat and drinks out of an empty bottle at 2:42.
sutro19 1 month ago
the all in is too quick
extremleise 1 month ago 3
@extremleise actually the quick all in is fine, it's standing up, moving left and right nervously that ruins it. I mean ok even if you're short stack against someone with a much bigger one, if you all-in so fast you better appear more confident
aldar98 1 month ago
SI es muy buen call pero también es verdad que se le nota el farol, da muchas pistas y Mercier si pierde aún puede sguir jugando... pero buen call ojo.
betxuboy1 2 months ago
Typical european poker player. Too aggressive with hot air, and they get owned in the long run.
Tehui1974 2 months ago
@Tehui1974 there are about 50 different countries in europe, all with completely differential cultures...if you really think there is a "typical european" then...well I don't know what then, go figure :) ...
lordhuebi 1 month ago
@lordhuebi Yep, I admit I'm generalising. But having played a lot of Spanish, Italian & Eastern european players on line, they do tend to be rip, sh!t & bust players.
Tehui1974 1 month ago
@Tehui1974 don't get me wrong though, it's a terrible play...it's typical fish, not typical european...cause again, there is no such thing
lordhuebi 1 month ago
@Tehui1974 Ridiculous statement...
pokeriotevas 1 month ago
Koskas was far too demonstrative in his actions...standing up immediately, pacing, continuously drinking. His eyes and body language suggested that he was desperate to win this hand...so desperate that he's probably bluffing. Mercier took his time to fully read that and it paid off for him.
