if it weren't for the 'long march' their attitude toward the minorities would be as bad as the nationalists under chiang kai-shek.
The one thing communist China did right was to recognize and allow minorities certain exclusive rights and give them semi-autonomy in certain areas. If you're going to subjugate a people, at least give them some dignity. Hmong/Miao are still among the poorest and least literate in China, but we have a rich and colorful history, and a history of rebellions against Chinese Imperial rule. It makes sense that they should take good care of minorities. Now Tibet? That's a different story...
