Would definitely make a chain driven version over friction like so many people do. The tread gets chewed off.

me and my friend made a friction drive motor for a bike... it chewed a hole in the tire before we could even try it.

i made a little 3 wheeler that was spindle driven similar to this and we used 1 in. black pipe and hammered it over the one end of the crank worked fine
