Totally amazing!!! A relative of mine told me his brother was bringing a feeder in the house to refill it, and the hummer followed him right into the house!!!
@DonnaFirsty My grandmother had a humming bird feeder that you could stick to your window with a suckion cup, she said that when the feeder would get empty the humming birds would actully tap on the window with their beaks!
We make our own nectar. That way we know that there aren't any unnecessary chemicals or coloring in them. 3 parts water to 1 part sugar. Stir until it's all dissolved and pour it into the feeders. No need to add red coloring. It's better for the birds that way.
@wolfcrazy101 BTW everyone red food coloring does nothing to the birds health. The myth originated when in the 70's or 80's red food coloring was made using partly poisonous chemicals. I don't know why so many people get so scared of red food coloring. "BUT WONt IT ROT. UR BRAINZ" No. "GIV U CONSTIAPATON" No "MAK U EXPLOOD" No
you know that sugar water gives them no nutrients, just a sugar rush.., its bad for them to have nothing but sugar, and i'm guessing you used refined sugar.?
I've seen some reports that the coloring can cause tongue/bill lesions, and/or liver damage. Point being, food coloring (either in store-bought "formulations" or in homemade brews) is totally unnecessary. Plain old white cane sugar and water... NOTHING more.
The recipe is supposed to be 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. We did a mixture of 2 parts sugar to 4 parts water just to see what would happen (no food coloring of course). Our ruby throated hummingbirds LOVED it, and fight over it LOL.
AWESOME JOB! Wish mine was that good, but I did get some quick footage of hummingbirds fighting with each and bees! Nature is amazing. It's nice to see someone else that does not use red coloring, once they get established somewhere they don't need it, they'll come back. I think I have a couple different families, that's why they fight.
I thought I was lucky to capture one of these elusive critters out my window, and you have them EATING OUT OF YOUR HAND! I love that you caught their humming wings, too. EXCELLENT VID!!!

how about a bit of tact and politeness, next time. you have ZERO videos, and what exactly do you need narrated???

I have feeders at my house without the red my step dad says the red dye is bad for them is that true?
shakeyboy 4 years ago
Not bad for them, but not required. Bird food mfg. use it to sell overpriced product. We use plain sugar.
